Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Browned-butter triple-chocolate chip cookies

    • Jviney on December 16, 2019

Wow, are these good. I struggled a bit at first - the recommendation is to chill overnight, and I can’t argue that the final product was perfect, but the dough was super hard to scoop and I had to cut it up with a knife. The flavor was just delicious, though...caramelized and complex. Loved them.

  • Raspberry macaron hearts

    • Jviney on May 03, 2018

These were a fun surprise! I made them with my three-year-old for hubby on Valentine’s Day and they were delicious. We used seedless raspberry jam. It may become a tradition!

  • Soft oatmeal cookies

    • Jviney on June 06, 2019

Loved the sweetness and spice of these cookies. I used dried pineapple and dried apricots in place of the raisins. I’d make them again.

  • Cappuccino Nanaimo bars

    • Frogcake on December 27, 2017

Yum! My oldest son is an expert Nanaimo bar taster and he approved! I’ve made regular Nanaimo bars using this recipe by omitting the espresso powder completely. For the filling, I added two tbsp of vanilla custard powder in place of the espresso and heavy cream in place of the water.

  • Apple streusel muffins

    • Frogcake on February 15, 2018

There is a lot of Apple in these muffins, and the taste is absolutely divine with the brown sugar streusel! These are the most flavourful Apple muffins I’ve made yet! I added half a cup of oat bran to replace equal amount of all purpose flour. You do need to let them cool before eating them.

    • Jviney on September 06, 2019

Frogcake is totally right - this is the best Apple muffin I have ever made. Great warm from the oven...even a little better with some butter. Delicious.

  • Chocolate chip-banana muffins

    • Jviney on June 08, 2026

Nice basic muffin for when you have brown bananas and you need a quick recipe that is solid and doesn't have any unusual ingredients. Three were gone before they properly cooled. Yum.

  • Our favourite bran muffins

    • Frogcake on June 15, 2019

So good! Despite the amount of fibre, (which can result in tasty hockey puck muffins) these are light and fluffy. I used frozen blueberries in place of raisins, and added about a tablespoon of flax seeds and quarter cup of sunflower seeds. Also added a half teaspoon of lemon rind. Best bran muffins I’ve made yet!

  • Morning glory muffins

    • Frogcake on March 02, 2018

Packed with the usual yummy ingredients, these are no different from other morning glory muffins I’ve tried. However they are unique in terms of the spices used- the orange zest, nutmeg and cinnamon - they are more highly scented than other morning glory muffins I’ve made in a very positive way. Will be making these again. I used all brown sugar, no nuts, and a combination of dried blueberries, cranberries and raisins in place of apricots and cherries.

  • Peanut butter-banana pancakes

    • Jviney on September 15, 2019

These were good! My family was skeptical about the chunks of banana but they were really good, added a nice variation in texture. No PB chips on hand, used chocolate chips. Great.

  • Luscious banana cream pie

    • Jviney on July 19, 2019

This was a nice, solid banana cream pie. I used the orange zest/juice option and liked the combination. Great for a hit summer day.

  • Orange-scented brioche

    • Frogcake on February 06, 2018

Although it was tasty, this bread didn’t quite work for me. My bread was dry and prone to crumbling - it was sliceable but broke easily. Not sure exactly what I did wrong. The dough didn’t seem to be moist enough before the first rise, so I added a few tablespoons of water. I don’t think I will try this one again.

  • Rum-spiked banana bread

    • Jviney on March 20, 2020

Good solid recipe; nothing outstanding. I will stick with the Flour or Midwest Made recipes, I believe.
