Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Classic brownie (redux)

    • bwhip on November 20, 2025

Excellent brownies! Not surprising, since it's nearly the same recipe as in his previous book "Baked," which is one of our favorite brownie recipes ever. The recipe is just cut in half for a smaller pan, and has a bit less egg, so slightly more fudgy than cakey.

  • Lemon drizzle cake (Scottish version)

    • k.a.g on February 11, 2026

This recipe seemed quite involved (or maybe I was just tired??) but I have to admit the end result was excellent - a beautiful crumb, not dry at all, and did not sink in the middle like some of my lemon drizzle cakes seem to. Definitely a keeper.

  • Brown butter snickerdoodle bars

    • bwhip on January 14, 2026

These were okay. I was hoping for more of a brownie/blondie cakey texture. When warm from the oven, they certainly had that. The next morning, however, they'd become quite firm, much more like a cookie.

  • Lemon cheesecake bars with cherry sauce

    • Kinhawaii on April 22, 2026

This recipe made nice, thick, & a little lemony bars. Definitely a repeat-& next time I will try the sauce. I had a small jar of Amarena cherries so used those up this time.

  • Surprisingly easy lemon shortbread

    • bwhip on March 11, 2026

Super easy, and turned out great. Nice and crispy, using the technique the author mentioned about leaving them in the oven with door ajar after baking. I saw the variation he suggested with cocoa nibs, and decided to try that - however I left the lemon zest, since I like a lemon/chocolate combination anyway. Very pleased with the results!

  • Molasses ginger cookies

    • SallyAT on January 06, 2026

Loved these cookies - I let the dough rest for several days in the fridge. 33g per cookie, 11 minutes baking time

  • Banana chocolate chip muffins: The surest thing

    • k.a.g on March 14, 2026

With a full cup of dark chocolate these were too chocolatey for me (and I felt the chocolate swamped the banana flavour), but that is easily modified. And to be fair, a handful of hungry boys wolfed down the entire batch in record timing, so perhaps I’m in the minority…!

  • A reasonable coffee cake with cocoa crumb

    • bwhip on November 23, 2025

Excellent coffee cake. Very chocolate-forward, but I’m not complaining! I made it in a 9” spring-form pan, and it turned out great. I didn’t think the 35 minute baking time would be enough, and it definitely wasn’t. Ours took about an hour. Only thing I’d maybe change next time would be to add a pinch of salt to the cocoa crumble topping.

    • SallyAT on March 14, 2026

55 min, salted butter, springform, pinch of salt to crumb topping and filling. Delicious
