Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Loaded mandoo

    • MaiaP on May 24, 2026

I couldn’t get them all out of the pan in one piece, but it was delicious nonetheless.

  • Pork belly tocino

    • dmdmdmmm on May 02, 2026

This is less sweet than storebought but I loved how it turned out. had it with the triple garlic rice and the chile vinegar and a fried egg and it was perfect.

  • Foolproof pineapple slaw

    • cheezacooks on April 30, 2026

This was good, would re-make. Has a nice, bright slaw flavor without being too mayo heavy and boring like others I've had

  • Broccoli banchan

    • eclairea on May 28, 2026

Delicious and quick prep for the humble broccoli. Served with the ground beef galbi beef bowls.

  • Spicy garlic cucumbers

    • eclairea on May 27, 2026

Served with the galbi beef bowls. Yummy and quick.

  • Palabucatini

    • dmdmdmmm on April 19, 2026

This tasted great but it felt tooo heavy for me. I saved half of the sauce and i’m gonna use it on some rice noodles and compare. The sauce itself is delish!

  • Filipino spaghetti bake

    • dmdmdmmm on May 02, 2026

Tbf it wasnt as sweet as what I expected from a Filipino Spaghetti recipe if you follow it as is. I still thought it was great! Had to add more condensed milk and then it just reminded me of the spaghetti I grew up having.

  • Triple-garlic rice

    • dmdmdmmm on April 30, 2026

This was garlicky without being too garlicky. Very straightforward and easy to make. I really liked it.

  • Shoyu chicken

    • cheezacooks on April 30, 2026

I used chicken leg quarters that I separated into drums and thighs. Overall, really good recipe. Makes a lot of extra braising broth that is delicious that makes me wonder if it could be good simmering liquid for something like potatoes, too. Would repeat!

    • PacoHayd on May 27, 2026

So, so delicious! Easy to put together. Great for a weeknight dinner.

  • "Take along" hibachi chicken or shrimp

    • gootenbeez on April 28, 2026

Made this with shrimp on a pellet grill. Marinated a few hours. Perfect. Delicious hot or cold. Used red Argentinan shrimp. I will have to try this on chicken but will certainly be making again this summer

  • Miso-peanut hibachi chicken

    • PacoHayd on May 09, 2026

Kid approved so this will definitely make it to the regular rotation of meals.

  • Sizzling salmon sisig

    • jenburkholder on April 06, 2026

This was quite tasty but lacked any “wow” factor. With canned salmon, came together very quickly using mostly pantry ingredients. Would soak the red onion; its flavor was a bit over-strong.

  • Longganisa sliders

    • dmdmdmmm on May 22, 2026

This was very good! Maybe adding a ketchup + mayo sauce would be nice as well but in itself it’s very tasty!

  • Ground beef galbi bowls

    • cheezacooks on April 30, 2026

Scratches the KBBQ itch for sure. Really nice and quick recipe that is relatively healthy. Cooked it using 88/12 ground beef and the sauce made up for the lack of flavor from being a relatively lean ground beef. Made 3x the original recipe, so the simmering time was a little longer (more like 10-15 instead of 3-5 minutes).

    • eclairea on May 27, 2026

So quick and delicious! Served with the spicy garlic cucumbers and some blanched gai lan.

  • Rainbow sherbet "finger jelly"

    • mikkarose on May 22, 2026

I didn’t get the cool separation effect (I did half the recipe though so maybe there wasn’t enough space? I’m going to assume it’s user error until I actually make it using the proper dimensions)

  • Chile vinegar

    • dmdmdmmm on April 30, 2026

      This was very punchy!

Publishers Text

The author of Cook Real Hawai’i brings the essence of Hawai’ian cuisine to everyday cooking with over 100 unfussy and flavorful recipes featuring easy ingredient substitutions, clever new techniques, and creative (and often plant-based) spins on traditional dishes.

Beloved chef and two-time Top Chef fan favorite Sheldon Simeon’s food joyfully reflects Hawai'i’s flavors and cooking styles, a mixture of island influences including Native Hawai'ian, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and other cuisines. With creative plant-based spins (like swapping out raw fish with pan-seared ripe avocado for a delicious "tataki", or using mushrooms to create the best "escargot") and shortcut cooking techniques (like searing shoyu-marinated tuna in a hot wok or pan to mimic smoking, or using a Chinese dry wok cooking style to perfect fish sticks), the recipes in Ohana Style shows how quick, easy, and flexible Hawai'ian cuisine can be.

Sheldon's recipes show how to blend sweet, savory, and tangy Hawai'ian flavors into every day meals, all the while centering the cuisine's legacy of communal-style eating, reminiscent of the traditions and memories of foods we all grew up with. In Ohana Style you’ll find umami-packed recipes meant for family—that’s what ohana means in Hawai'ian—weeknight dinners, quick lunches, snacks, cookouts, and barbecues.

From Pork Belly Tocino with garlic rice for breakfast and Stir-Fried Olives with ginger as a midday snack, to a pan-fried Lemon-Caper Mahi dinner with Furikake Animal Crackers for dessert, Ohana Style has recipes for every mood and any event—for people who want to get something flavorful and delicious on the table quickly without forgoing the exciting and layered flavors of local Hawai'ian cooking.
