  This is a chef cookbook that genuinely is useable by home cooks. The recipes are intelligent and delicious; what more do you want? Well, the edition I have (UK, 2009) is large and printed on heavy paper, with good pictures of most recipes. It is a fancy cookbook that now can be bought used for $5 or so, including shipping. Heckofa deal.

    This is stunning - a really delicate flavour and very moist. The cream cheese icing tops it off. Makes a decent-sized slab. This is one of my goto slices when people come over for coffee. 5 stars from me.

• Apple fruit cake

    Great cake to serve for afternoon tea - lovely texture and great flavour. Cake is light enough and we enjoyed the mix of fruit, walnuts and spices. Used unpeeled red apples. Cake broke in half when removing from tin after 10 minutes, leave longer to cool next time.

    Found the miso marinade just ok, husband loved it. Comes together in less than 10 minutes, thus great for a weeknight dinner. Served with basmati rice and bok choy.

• Chicken wings with satay sauce

    Made this with chicken thigh fillets instead of wings and added a bag of frozen stir fry vegetables to bulk it out. A great family mid-week meal.

    Tasty enough way to eat vegetables - reheats well so worked well for work lunches. Increase vegetables next time - relatively small serves if cooking for dinner. Served with brown rice.

    Used sweet potato instead of pumpkin and added beans. Not mind-shattering but a decent, easy and quick, meal.

    Simple to prepare, absolutely delicious to eat. I used 80g roquefort and 20g cheddar as that's what I had. My husband was disappointed at the serving size (tip: if you're ravenously hungry or big eaters you will need to double the recipe) but I was left satisfied after the meal.

• Chinese style omelette with barbecued pork

    Using rice wine in the omelette really makes this dish sing. Try it with left over roast pork and shredded cabbage, or for something really special - duck.

• Fettucine with asparagus pesto

    This is the recipe that turned up in my EYB search for asparagus and spinach. Quite quick to make, even though I blanched and toasted the almonds myself. Husband and I liked it a lot!

    This was okay but unfortunately I wasn't overly impressed with the end result (although it was very easy to make,). I liked the flavour of the yoghurt and sumac added at the end but thought the rest of the soup was somewhat bland. I think this would be okay if it was thicker in texture.

• Pumpkin cannelloni

    The whole family gave this a big thumbs up - it was delicious and a great way to use up an abundance of pumpkin. I added some feta cheese to the white sauce which I will repeat. I also sprinkled water over the stuffed cannelloni before pouring over the sauce to ensure pasta was soft.

• Nostalgic lamb curry with yoghurt & apple

    Great for those who prefer their curries aromatic. I added half a cup of dessicated coconut for thickening and true nostalgia!

    Tried this with the BBQ rottiserie and it was delicious. The salbitxada is easier to east than it is to say!

    I have made this several times. The sauce looks a bit of a faff, but it's delicious!!
