Notes about this book

Got this as a wedding present 30 years ago and it's by far my most-used cookbook. It's a great guide to cooking virtually everything. Some recipes are gourmet quality, most are more for every day, so there's a good mix. If you could have only one cookbook, this would be an excellent one to choose, especially for beginners. It will tell you how to set the table, what cookware to buy to stock your kitchen, how to do basic stuff like make mashed potatoes or an omelet and how to do exotic stuff like escargot or Chateaubriand steak. It covers everything from cakes, canning, and candy-making to skinning and preparing game animals as well as gutting and filleting fish and how to select and prepare most every cut of meat imaginable. I can't imagine a more complete guide. My two-volume set is falling apart it's been used so much. The bread-making chapter could be a small book in itself.

It's all here, whatever you want. I was told about it by a dear friend who said that it was her goto book - the 1975 edition. I got it from Amazon and have not been sorry. I am enjoying cooking the recipes and getting the compliments from my family. You can't go wrong with this one.
