Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Vanilla frosting

    • Lmocooks on October 30, 2018

Makes a relatively small amount, barely enough to make a decorative edge to a 12 in cake. Taste is good, even if a slight bit grainy.

  • Glaze icing

    • Lmocooks on October 30, 2018

Makes a small amount. Barely enough to make pretty dollops around a 12 in cake. Taste is good for buttercream, even if a tiny bit grainy.

  • Brown butter snickerdoodles

    • Ishie1013 on October 30, 2022

These are some of the best snickerdoodles I’ve ever had, including store bought. The brown butter absolutely makes the recipe.

  • White chocolate macadamia nut cookies

    • mharriman on May 12, 2018

Yum!! My family doesn’t like white chocolate, so I used regular chocolate chips instead. Such a beautiful looking and tasty cookie! Sally McKenney’s cookie recipes never fail when I use them.

  • Sweet and salty M&M combo cookies

    • Jviney on January 16, 2026

I think these would really benefit from the suggested sea salt sprinkle on top, which I forgot. Otherwise, they’re kind of a meh cookie although pretty with the M&Ms.

  • Soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies

    • mharriman on November 30, 2017

A dependable ccc recipe. I’d pretty much given up making chocolate chip cookies because they always spread on me, but decided to try this one after having success with two other recipes in this book. Perfect results! The only thing I don’t like is having to chill the dough for 3+ hours. I chilled the dough overnight and made them the next morning. Just need to plan ahead for this cookie recipe.

  • Super-chewy chocolate chip cookie bars

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

I think I may have under baked mine, so watch for that. Overall great flavor - very classic.

  • Giant M&M's cookies

    • Sparkles75 on April 15, 2019

These were amazing! Taste, texture.. all just so delicious. I made them into tablespoon sized balls to bake and they were plenty big enough for us.

  • Jude & Franklin's favorite dog biscuits

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

Easy to make and my golden retriever loved these!!

    • mharriman on December 22, 2021

Made these for my Scottish terrier’s Christmas stocking, but I let him “test” 1/2 a baked biscuit and he ate it right up and looked at me expectantly for more. As another reviewer mentioned, these are easy to make. I might just start making these instead of buying dog treats at the store.

  • Big chewy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

These are the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I have ever eaten. They are huge, soft, and full of chocolate and oats. Make sure not to over bake, and also add the 1 tbsp of molasses as suggested.

    • brenda_bv2nm8 on March 09, 2026

I had trouble with the edges getting too dark and the middle not baked through, didn't look like the picture. However, they were still very good.

  • Autumn spice oatmeal cookies

    • Aggie92 on October 31, 2018

Not bad, but there is way too much going on in this cookie. The pumpkin spice is lost in all the other flavors and the dark chocolate really dominates. The coconut also seems superfluous, gives a little chew but not much else. I made the following minor changes to the recipe: substituted walnuts for pepitas, omitted the granulated sugar and they were still plenty sweet, and for high altitude reduced the baking soda to 1/2 teaspoon.

    • airwair75 on November 08, 2025

I liked these. I always double the spice for oatmeal cookies, so the flavor comes through pretty strong, with the molasses dominating everything. I agree the coconut is superfluous- I don't really taste it at all. Overall, a good solid cookie and nice change from chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin.

  • Favorite oatmeal raisin cookies

    • mharriman on March 02, 2019

For decades I’ve used the Vanishing Cookie recipe on the container of the Quaker old-fashioned rolled oats box but they always spread a bit, so decided to try these. I don’t like large cookies, so instead of using a two tablespoon scoop, I used a one tablespoon and produced 48 cookies. Great results! I loved the amount of raisins in these. If you like a lot of raisins with your oatmeal cookies, you’ll love these.

  • Monster cookies

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

Very tasty. Easy to put together and a total crowd pleaser.

  • Iced carrot cake oatmeal cookies

    • taste24 on December 28, 2020

These were delicious! Very soft and pliable, and have a lot of height out of the oven and still when cooled. With the icing, these truly taste like mini carrot cakes.

  • Banana almond berry breakfast cookies

    • anne_xzj2j6 on April 23, 2026

Not my personal favorite, but my three teens devoured them for on-the-go breakfast or a healthy school snack!

  • Nutella no-bakes

    • mharriman on March 02, 2019

I love the dense chocolate flavor of these. They are rich, so just one satisfies my chocolate craving. They’re almost like fudge. Easy to prepare.

  • Raspberry almond Linzer cookies

    • Sparkles75 on April 15, 2019

These were a little fiddly to make but received rave reviews.

  • Cherry almond coconut macaroons

    • mharriman on November 30, 2017

Decadently delicious cookies. Very Easy to make until the drizzling of white chocolate part. The white chocolate never became thin enough in liquid form to drizzle. I ended up just dripping a dollop lengthwise once, but the result was nothing like the photo ( thin stripes) in the cookbook. I’m not sure the white chocolate icing adds anything other than visual appeal to the cookie, so may just omit it next time. Gave as a gift with other cookies and this was the fav.

    • Sparkles75 on April 15, 2019

      Lovely! These were very popular.

  • Ginger pistachio cookies

    • mharriman on December 20, 2017

Excellent! Need to plan time to unshell pistachios if, like me, you can’t find unshelled. This is the fifth cookie recipe I’ve made from this book, and like the others, this cookie is incredible. Makes even me, a klutz at baking, look like a pro. Sally Mckenney is my new hero.

  • Pecan tassies

    • Sparkles75 on April 15, 2019

These were quite nice but not really to our taste. The recipe itself was well written and they turned out well though.

  • Easy cinnamon snowballs

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

These are easy to make. They remind me a little of a Mexican Wedding Cake cookie. Not my favorite style of cookie (a little dry), but others enjoyed

  • Buttery shortbread

    • mharriman on February 13, 2018

Irresistible! I had a bit of trouble with the dough sticking to the rolling pin at times ( even with floured roll out board and floured pin). I used a two inch round cutter and the thicker dough (1/2 inch) made better cookies. I love how this recipe produces a delicate, light cookie with a lovely but not overpowering buttery flavor. I couldn’t stop eating these and they are indeed wonderful companions for tea.

  • Chai tea spice shortbread

    • dbuhler on September 26, 2025

I really like these cookies! I especially love the melt-in-your-mouth texture from the powdered sugar. I enjoyed this cookie plain, but since it is not super sweet it was greatly improved by a small dunk and some bittersweet chocolate. I rested the dough overnight in the fridge and then once the cookies were rolled and cut I put the trays in the fridge to chill while the oven heated up. I increase the flour to 357g since I am high altitude and it worked very well as I had very little spreading. I would make these again!

  • Maple walnut slice-and-bake cookies

    • Aggie92 on December 16, 2022

These are fantastic! Baked the cookies plain and then decorated with a sweep of melted white chocolate and a sprinkle of turbinado sugar.

    • brenda_bv2nm8 on April 10, 2026

This is one of the best cookies I've ever made. Love the maple and white chocolate flavor combination. This is absolutely a keeper.

  • Sugar cookie sparkles

    • Lmocooks on October 26, 2018

Cooked for the longer listed time, the slight crisp edge and soft middle make for an excellent little sugar cookie.

  • Soft-baked sugar cookie bars

    • taste24 on June 12, 2020

Delicious and easy. If you're a fan of chewy sugar cookies, you will love these! I did not make them with the recommended frosting.

  • Birthday party thumbprints

    • Sparkles75 on April 15, 2019

My 3 year old absolutely loved these and said they were his favourite ever. Great option for kids parties.

  • Giant funfetti cookie pizza

    • Lmocooks on October 30, 2018

Very tasty, and a good texture even though I had no cornstarch and didn’t try to substitute anything for it. The suggested frosting pairs well with it but I recommend making at least 1.5 times the recipe.

  • Crisscross peanut butter cookies

    • mharriman on July 27, 2019

My husband and I liked the softness and creaminess of these peanut butter cookies. They look just like the ones my mom used to make but are more buttery and melt-in-your mouth. I’m taking them to a function and will see if others agree!

  • Peanut butter Nutella swirl cookies

    • Jviney on July 02, 2024

One of my friends said this was the best cookie she’s ever tasted. They’re very good. Next time, I would incorporate the Nutella by hand rather than following the directions of ten seconds with the mixer…I lost my opportunity for Nutella swirls. So good.

    • Jviney on August 02, 2024

Update: second time making them in less than a month, by request. I uses a butter knife to swirl in the Nutella and it was much more effective.

  • Peanut butter-stuffed cookie cups

    • mharriman on November 30, 2017

These are wonderful! I discovered that it’s important to not overfill the muffin cup space with dough because when I put in a bit more than I should have, the cookie puffed up over the cup rim and wouldn’t come out without breaking. These were a major hit with my peanut butter loving husband.

  • Pecan turtle cookie bars

    • taste24 on May 26, 2021

These are REALLY good, and quite easy to put together. They had strong toffee notes.. will be making again.

  • Chocolate hazelnut thumbprints

    • brenda_bv2nm8 on March 31, 2026

Very good. Deep chocolate flavor, and I did not feel they were overly sweet

  • Midnight brownie cookies

    • bwhip on March 28, 2018

These are great! We’ve tried a few brownie cookie recipes over the years, and these are the best. Nicely chewy with crispy edges and really good chocolate flavor.

  • Dark chocolate peanut butter-stuffed cookies

    • hbakke on August 19, 2019

These weren't terrible, but I used salted butter and forgot to reduce the salt in the recipe. The cookie dough isn't very sweet, so the additional salt was noticeable. My one frustration with this recipe is the cookies were completely flat and didn't look like the picture at all. I don't know how to fix this.

  • Double chocolate coconut macaroons

    • mharriman on February 13, 2018

If you like coconut and you like chocolate, you’ll love these cookies. I skipped the melted chocolate on the bottom. I was making them as part of an evening get together at my house and was afraid the chocolate wouldn’t set and would be a mess to pick up and eat. As made, they were nice- chocolatey throughout with an inner darker chocolate layer that added depth to the cookie.

  • Hot cocoa cookies

    • mharriman on January 18, 2020

Very chocolatey! I had some Hershey’s cocoa powder about to exceed its best by date, so decided to use some and try this recipe. I omitted the mini marshmallows since my husband doesn’t like them, so can only comment on the cookie without them or the melted chocolate topping. If you really like chocolate, you’ll most likely love this cookie. Besides the cocoa powder, it has chocolate chips which make it an extra chocolatey chocolate cookie. One cookie more than satisfied me. Baked for 12 minutes. Unlike other cookies in the book, this recipe produced a rather flat cookie. Update: very popular with teens and children at 1/19 church coffee hour. To do: Repeat and make 1 batch with mini marshmallows/ chocolate drizzle for kiddos.

  • Butterscotch no-bakes

    • Jviney on May 13, 2022

Strangely addictive. Two boys down with colds and a very hot day; these were so fast to whip together and they satisfied a craving for something sweet. Maybe not the highest pedigree of cookie, but very serviceable.

  • Espresso white chocolate chunk cookies

    • taste24 on June 17, 2020

The cookie dough base was a little different - not as much flavor as I'd hoped. Not bad, but not amazing. Don't know if I'd make again.
