Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Coconut banana muffins

    • veganheathen on May 23, 2026

The muffins were really dry and crumbly. I think they’d be okay if you add some butter or jam.

  • French lentil soup with smoked paprika

    • sayeater on March 15, 2023

A nice hearty soup for winter. Easy to pull together with pantry ingredients. My adventurous palate would double the smoked paprika next time, for me it was more of a hint than the dominant flavor I was expecting. I ate it with a a slice of whole grain bread and goat cheese (you could do herbed cashew cheese) and it was a lovely snow day lunch!

  • Almond roasted cauliflower

    • Lglen on November 17, 2019

      So easy and so good!!!

  • Simplicity asparagus

    • sherri_xcf6n4 on May 05, 2026

Perfection! 2 1/2 minutes high broil, toss, just a smidge short of 2 1/2 minutes more. Put a tiny bit of grated vegan parm on top, which didn’t add a lot of flavor but looked great.

  • No-fu love loaf

    • sayeater on March 15, 2023

I have made this loaf a few times. over the years. I adjust seasonings and topping amount to our liking (more!). Used horse gram lentils this time because I was out of regular brown. Horse gram are the highest protein lentils (mainly used in Indian cooking) and have a bit of a unique earthy/nutty flavor but they worked perfectly and made my protein loving teen happy. He ate 1/2 the loaf within 24 hours! The recipe has GF variation too so it's a great option for hosts wondering what to feed their vegan/vegetarian/GF/dairy-free guests.

  • Award-winning frosted b-raw-nies

    • ingabritt on June 28, 2019

      A. These are really good for raw, healthyish brownies. The frosting was really rich and delicious and the base was basically a chocolate larabar. Alex and Nora liked them too. Made on 6-28-19

Burton emphasizes whole foods, greens and beans, with plenty of international flavors to keep menus varied. There's just the right mix of difficulty, with enough easy recipes for novice cooks...

Publishers Text

In the tradition of "Vegan Lunch Box" and "The Gluten-Free Vegan", this title features 200 whole-foods based recipes with an emphasis on wheat-free and gluten-free options from one of the first vegan bloggers and author of 3 previous books. Dreena Burton has always cooked and baked with whole foods and lesser processed ingredients, but this book goes a step further in whole foods recipes. Vegan eating is no longer just about not eating meat, dairy, and eggs. It has evolved to eating nutrient-dense foods everyday like beans, leafy greens, whole-grain pastas, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds ...and finding ways to make them into delicious sauces and dips and burgers and casseroles. This cookbook provides 175 recipes based on whole foods and unrefined, lesser processed ingredients - no white flour, no white sugar, more natural sweeteners, and savory recipes using legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and vegetables. The bulk of the recipes are wheat-free and many more are gluten-free or made with raw foods. Recipes include Coconut Banana Muffins, Nutty Veggie Burgers, Almond Roasted Cauliflower, Triple Threat Chocolate Coconut Macaroons, Pumpkin Spice Cake, and more! Burton is known for the "cook's notes" she includes with every recipe - tips, substitutions, and serving suggestions you might receive from your vegan best friend. Her recipes feel genuine, approachable, and friendly as she talks you through the preparation and cooking processes. And as a soccer mom, Burton always has her kids - and their taste buds - in mind. Her recipes are sure to delight even the pickiest eaters and provide lifelong vegans with the practical recipes they've always wanted.
