  • Gooseberry tart

      I had so looked forward to this tart, as the picture in the book looks delicious and the process was quite time consuming - however, it was a disaster! The custard didn’t set, so we ended up with a sharp tasting custardy sauce floating around the berries. Not sure why, as I’d followed the recipe to a t! Was it the balsamic vinegar?! (Which, I think, one can taste in the custard...) Not one to repeat for us.

There is a section dedicated to growing under covers and in containers. Introduced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and with 30 delicious recipes, beautiful, full-colour photographs and a directory of useful addresses, this is the ideal reference for any aspiring fruit grower.
