Pan seared salmon with sweet and sour chutney is an easy enough weeknight meal that tastes really great. Served it with Persian basmati rice on the side.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Austrian-style potato salad

    • Rinshin on June 21, 2016

Really liked this light tasting potato salad. A bit lighter version of German potato salad without bacon, bacon grease, etc. This one uses chicken broth to cook the potatoes and liked the idea of mashing small amount of potatoes to make a slurry. The amount of vinegar, mustard, and sugar was just right. I had two stalks of asparagus I wanted to use up and sliced them diagonally, parboil very quickly and added to the salad. Served this with leftover rib eye roast with au jus and horseradish sauce along with fresh corn on the cob. Gruner veltliner completes it.

  • Skillet chicken pot pie with biscuit topping

  • Skillet jambalaya

    • vikingcook on January 18, 2017

Makes a huge amount! Fairly simple but I wouldn't say this is a quick weeknight meal. Between prepping the shrimp, the vegetables, browning, then shredding the chicken, this takes at least an hour and a half. I used chicken andouille sausage, not very spicy. Any spiciness come from the sausage.

  • Old-fashioned beef pot roast

    • stef on October 11, 2016

This made a nice tender pot roast

  • Chicken pot pie with savory crumble topping

    • Apepin on October 23, 2020

This is a family favorite. The topping is killer.

  • Turkey gravy

    • Kouture007 on January 13, 2013

      Can be made ahead.

  • Thick-cut tenderloin medallions

    • Kouture007 on December 20, 2011

      Bacon-wrapped version is fabulous.

  • Oven-fried onion rings

    • jumali on September 22, 2011

A bit time consuming, but tastes very good.

  • Pasta with mushrooms

    • stef on October 04, 2019

Rather bland and makes too much sauce for the dish

  • Penne with vodka sauce (Penne alla vodka)

    • stef on November 09, 2016

This made a tasty quick meal

  • Spaghetti alla carbonara

    • stef on October 17, 2015

Didn't have white wine. Used 1/4 cup vermouth instead. We really enjoyed and will make again

  • Baked ziti

    • stef on February 20, 2016

This was a very tasty dish. Quick to prepare but I would increase quantity of cheese next time

  • Rosemary focaccia

    • sarahkalsbeek on June 01, 2020

This was stunningly delicious focaccia! The only complaint is that it was a bit too salty!

  • French-style stuffed chicken breasts

    • apattin on June 28, 2019

Tasty sauce, too much garlic. Instead of tying the rolls I wrapped them in cling wrap, stored in fridge overnight and they held their shape. Did not need lemon juice or butter.

  • Steak au poivre with brandied cream sauce

    • Rinshin on August 04, 2015

This recipe made me happy with nostalgia - soo delicious! We split a small ribeye for 2 people which was plenty for us. The taste of sauce was perfect and so easy to make. Along with this, I also made frites from America's Test Kitchen to round out the dinner and broiled tomatoes.

  • Steak frites

    • Rinshin on August 04, 2015

I made the frites part of this recipe. Loved the idea of adding cornstarch to potato pieces before double frying. Perfectly done!

  • Fish Meuniére with browned butter and lemon

    • Rinshin on August 14, 2015

We love fish meuniere and this recipe is wonderful. Salting fish ahead and letting it sit for 10-20 minutes is also a classic Japanese method of eliminating any unwanted fish smell.

  • Potstickers with scallion dipping sauce

    • love2laf on February 10, 2010

Excellent flavour and cooking method for the wontons. I still find my patience worn thin by making so many little nibblies. The dipping sauce was only average though.

  • Thai pork lettuce wraps

    • love2laf on February 03, 2010

One of the few recipes I can't think to make an improvement on. After one bite, I stopped caring about the messiness of serving this way, and just dug in.I did not use pork tender loin though, I used pork shoulder, and I used my grinder instead of the food processor.

  • Hot and sour soup

    • djoh437938 on July 11, 2011

this recipe is so good, had to go to a japanese market to find it, it is worth it, totally.

  • Chicken teriyaki

    • stef on February 15, 2018

This was quick to make but very salty even though it only had a half cup of soya sauce and i used the one with less salt

  • Stir-fried beef and broccoli with oyster sauce

    • Kouture007 on January 13, 2013

      Everyone's favorite.

  • Stir-fried portobellos with ginger-oyster sauce

    • jumali on September 22, 2011

Tastes good but not worth the mountain of prep work and cleanup.

  • Grilled stuffed flank steak for a charcoal grill

    • Analyze on March 31, 2017

This is SO good! I LOVE the spinach and pine nuts variation (using Asiago cheese, which Kenji mentioned in the recipe's article but didn't reflect in the recipe), and my husband loves the original version with Provolone and Prosciutto. It is easy to make both versions in the same roll, because the herb rub is the same. It is so delicious with the cheese. We used the BelGioioso sharp aged provolone for this one, which has an entirely different flavor (much stronger) than supermarket young provolone. These also re-heat well and don't get dry!

  • Broiled asparagus

  • Buttermilk waffles

    • stef on June 17, 2018

These were o.k. didn't get the crunch they are suppose to get from the cornmeal. Not on my list for favourite waffles

  • Ultimate banana bread

    • sarahkalsbeek on April 21, 2020

Very delicious banana bread! Watch out when you microwave the bananas - I guess I used a too small bowl, and the liquid boiled over the sides! Also, when you line the bananas along the top edges, don't put them too close to the edge or they will stick to the pan. Amazing banana flavor - not sure I'd use any other recipe after trying this one.

  • Banana bread

  • Croissants

    • stef on September 06, 2020

My go to recipe. Easy step by step instructions,

  • Molasses spice cookies

    • vikingcook on March 12, 2016

Absolutely delicious. Just what a soft molasses cookie should be. Very complex flavore.

  • Chocolate-chunk oatmeal cookes with pecans and dried cherries

    • vikingcook on March 12, 2016

Delicious oatmeal cookies. Made more than 18.

  • Congo bars

    • vikingcook on March 12, 2016

      Rich, rich, rich! So delicious!

  • Carrot cake

    • sarahkalsbeek on April 13, 2020

Perfect carrot cake. Changed the spices to 2 t cinnamon, 1.25 t ginger, and grated nutmeg. Baked in 2 round pans for 35 minutes or so. Used the white chocolate cream cheese buttercream from The Cake Bible (instead of the frosting listed with this recipe). Amazing!!

  • Blueberry cobbler

    • jumali on July 26, 2010

An excellent recipe! The blueberries were the perfect consistency--neither too runny nor too thick, and the cornmeal added a great texture to the biscuit. I'll definitely make this again.

  • Easy caramel cake

    • stef on December 07, 2016

A wonderful moist cake with a nice icing

  • Italian vegetable stew (Ciambotta)

    • ecasey830 on October 06, 2019

      Labor-intensive but worth it

  • Mushroom and leek galette with Gorgonzola

    • stef on April 19, 2017

This was so good. Substituted feta cheese .

  • Best butterscotch pudding

    • Analyze on March 25, 2017

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I made it side by side with the older "Butterscotch Pudding" published by the same company in the America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, and this one was SO much more flavorful. Because you end up cooking the caramel to a deeper color/flavor, it turns out a better pudding with WAY more intense flavors; it also has more rich ingredients (more butter and cream). The older ATK recipe (while good) is incredibly mild by comparison (kids might like it better). If you do make this amazing recipe, I'll add that we personally preferred it without the rum, though it's good with the rum too.
