Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Beetroot and rye chocolate cake

    • Tessvssr on February 13, 2026

Very good! Slight bitter aftertaste from the beets, but it was pleasant.

  • Pryazovia Greek meat and potato pie (Kobete)

    • meginyeg on February 11, 2026

This was good. I had some changes. I used pie dough instead of puff pastry. Only did crust on the top. And used a pie dish. It took a bit longer to cook. But it was tasty. Flavors were good and everyone liked it.

  • Polish kapusniak soup

    • Lepa on June 25, 2025

This was okay but we didn't love it. I usually love soups with sauerkraut but this wasn't my favorite version of the soup.

  • Czech kyselica soup

    • Pimlicocook on January 24, 2026

Lighter than expected, given a healthy dollop of sour cream, and deliciously tangy. Will make again, with allspice berries rather than my cinnamon/clove/nutmeg substitute.

  • Romanian sauerkraut, meat and grains bake (Varza a la Cluj)

    • Tessvssr on January 12, 2026

We actually (quite suprisingly) loved this! The textures were very pleasant and just overall tasty and healthy.

  • Romani cabbage and chestnut pie

  • Beetroot and egg garlicky mayo spread

    • Lepa on December 05, 2025

I used precooked beets from the store but am guessing this would be better with roasted beets. Also, this is not the place for your jammy eggs because the egg is grated into the dip. Otherwise this was a nice on a piece of sourdough. The garlic and horseradish contrast well with the sweet beet flavor.

  • Herby smetana bed with colourful beets

    • snackbaby on August 11, 2025

this was very good, made this with fresh beets from the farmer's market

  • Beetroot and kidney bean stew with chard and feta

    • snackbaby on March 28, 2025

lovely, easy weeknight dish! nice leftovers too. made with kale instead of chard.

  • Fennel and potato salad with mustard and dill

    • Lepa on June 25, 2025

I really liked this potato salad. It's a good one if you don't like mayo (I do but also like potato salads without). It's tangy and fresh with the pickled onions and fennel- and the mustard and dill dressing. It seems like the salad will be even better as a leftover.

  • Ukrainian potato and bean mash (Tovchanka)

  • Latkes

    • Lepa on December 21, 2025

These were delicious. You can't taste the sauerkraut much but the onions give these latkes a really good flavor. We also liked the dill sour cream accompaniment.

    • Tessvssr on January 18, 2026

      Loved it! And easy too!

  • Pearl barley tabbouleh with roasted carrots and walnuts

    • monica_qi1zwl on April 04, 2026

Liked it! Pearl barley takes 1h tho

  • Carrot and lentil soup from the Torah

    • amyherzberg on March 09, 2026

Seemed to be some errors in the recipes this wasn’t great, unfortunately. The ingredients list calls for a potato, but nowhere in the recipe does it say to add said potato, so I just added it at the beginning, with the other veg. Then the stock had all evaporated after simmering for 15 minutes, so I had to add another 500ml… but then after I blended it all the lentils seemed to not have cooked completely… all in all not great.

  • Hungarian goulash

    • ConnickCooks on June 16, 2025

Very tasty! If I made it again I would braise the meat a bit longer than the recipe suggests, but otherwise this was spot on.

    • Beck001 on November 20, 2025

Tasty stew and family liked it - especially as different than normal stew. I actually braised it in the oven. Will cook again but may change my proportion of veggies and meat. (More meat - probably less potatoes )

  • Mushroom and potato fry-up

    • monica_qi1zwl on April 04, 2026

Good, but burned it should do it again

  • Rosie's buckwheat stir-fry with mushrooms, pancetta and kimchi

    • Lepa on January 14, 2026

Unfortunately this recipe was really disappointing. I don't understand how so many great elements could end up tasting like flavorless mush. I used bacon instead of pancetta but doubt that was the problem. I wonder if cooking the bacon and then taking the ingredients out so the mushrooms sear would have been better. In any case, I cannot recommend this recipe and won't be repeating it.

  • Hungarian mushroom paprikash stew

    • gootenbeez on March 07, 2025

Came together quickly and very delicious. My only compaint is while I understand the importance of the amount of paprika used, I only had a small amount of smoked paprika ($$$) so I ended up using half of what I had just bought. Served with wide egg noddles.

    • meginyeg on March 12, 2025

This was delicious. Used a combo of smoked and regular paprika. Will make again.

    • ConnickCooks on June 16, 2025

This was delicious! Whips together quickly (the most tedious part is slicing the mushroom, so buy pre sliced if you’re in a rush). I’ve made this at least 3 times in the past two months.

    • Beck001 on November 22, 2025

This was a delicious and brought back memories from my grandmother & travel - my grandmother was German but lived near many from Eastern Europe. It was far smokier a flavor than I wanted (and remembered) - maybe it’s the spice brand and/ or personal taste. Will make next time with a mix. Nice interesting different vegetarian dish. Note this isn’t a stew that is a large quantity as many stews / soups are.

  • Red cabbage, beetroot and horseradish sauerkraut

    • jd_z77v3u on January 22, 2026

The bite of the horseradish gets mellowed a lot by the fermentation, so the final product has a nice horseradish flavor but isn't super spicy.
