Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Barbecued minty lamb chops (Tandoori choppe)

    • FoodyFocus1 on May 05, 2025

Very easy and very tasty. Will repeat. A bit heavy on the salt I thought but that's a matter of taste I suppose

  • Black pepper chicken (Kaali mirchi wala murgh)

    • etcjm on May 29, 2019

Adapted slightly in that I halved it and used 2 breasts instead and added coconut cream instead of water. Really good. Used 1 chilli and it wasn't hot but had good flavour. I will do again but do the full spice recipe with 3 breasts as maybe the ratio was off? Teenage daughter enjoyed it, but she wouldn't eat the dahl! Looking forward to leftovers.

  • Yoghurt-braised lamb (Dahi gosht)

    • rodillagra on January 25, 2015

  • Traditional pea pilaff (Mattar pullao)

    • etcjm on July 06, 2019

Very good. Served alongside a number of different dishes. It did the job, it wasn't plain rice, it wasn't coconut and it wasn't spicy. Just what was required.

  • Sunny lentil curry (Peeli dal)

    • etcjm on May 29, 2019

Easy side. Made a few times as I always enjoy a dahl alongside a meat dish. If you don't want it runny and are against the clock to cook it down, add much less water and just add as needed as you prep the other dishes. pick a bigger pan than you think otherwise you'll be cleaning the stove as well. One chilli for me provided no heat at all.

  • Punjabi peasant lentil curry (Macholle ki dal)

    • etcjm on May 29, 2019

This was one of my first forays into Indian food years and years ago. The colour is great from the black gram and even though it always takes longer than you think for lentils, this one does become thick and is great to serve with a spread of other dishes. Leftovers are particularly tasty, some dahls can be a bit bland but I think this works alongside fiery dishes and mild dishes alike.

  • Earthy green lentil curry (Moong ki dal)

    • FoodyFocus1 on August 07, 2025

I'm working through various dhal recipes at the moment for cheap vegetarian lunch options. This was a success. Tasted fresh and comforting at the same time. I may have put in more ginger than called for but that just made the kitchen smell nice. I'm not very familiar with lentils. I don't think that my yellow mung dhal were split, but I don't know how to recognise that. I cooked it for longer than the recipe said as it was a bit watery. Makes enough for a generous lunch for 2 with two roti each

  • Melt-in-your mouth mushrooms (Masala khumbi)

    • etcjm on May 29, 2019

Always excellent. This is the one I'm asked to make to take to parties. Next time you see a batch of mushrooms cheap, just try it. Take out frustration on the cashews and make them smooth, if they are lumpy it comes through in the texture. Use a blender if you can even though it's a small amount.
