Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Fresh fig bars

    • chawkins on September 14, 2021

These were delicious, very fragrant and not too sweet. I used three cups of stem and quartered figs from our tree. Unfortunately, my filling was not thick enough even though I cooked it for double the recommended time, so the cookies were a little bit messy, hence no photo. I wondered if I should have measured the figs before stemming and quartering.

    • chawkins on September 20, 2021

The tree is still gifting me with tons of figs and I found out that the bars freezes well, so I made these again, this time cooking the filling down a little more, it splatters a lot, so beware. I also put the filling in the fridge overnight. This time around, the result is more presentable, so photo attached.

  • Cornmeal cake with fresh corn and berries

    • amraub on August 23, 2012

A nice, hearty cake that's good for snacking. I would prefer more berries in the cake (I used a mixture of blackberries and raspberries), but it's a good base.

...a wonderful introduction into the world of baking with pears. The base for the cake is a super-moist gingerbread... While this cake is great straight out of the oven, it's even better the next day

...a perfect transitional dessert. ...finished with a sprinkle of sea salt and cracked black pepper, savory elements that tie together the sweet and tart notes of this gorgeous early fall sundae.

Savory flavors from the grill smoke and rosemary challenged the sweetness of the peaches and gelato in a delicious way. Likewise, the sauce was a mix of sweet and tart, rather than just sweet...

  • Farmer's secret chocolate bundt cake

The grated vegetables add a great deal of moisture to the cake, keeping butter and fats to a minimum. Once cooked, the zucchini and beets practically melt into the cake.

  • Strawberry buckwheat tea cake

    • Lisa Is Cooking

The inspiration for this tea cake was strawberry and buckwheat pancakes. By adding browned butter to the cake batter, it becomes reminiscent of a buttery stack of pancakes.
