Favorite cookbooks organized by season?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hi all,

I have gradually realized how much I enjoy cookbooks being organized by season.  And sometimes this fact is not obvious from the title.  I.e., there are of course books like Six Seasons, but also others like Melissa Clark's Cook This Now or Trine Hahnemann's Scandinavian Green that one would not necessarily know were organized this way.  Another nice one is Georgeanne Brennan's Potager.

What are your favorite books organized by season, especially ones people might not know are organized that way?

jfleissn, you might want to do a search in the Library/Books (or your Bookshelf/Books) using the Seasonal filter. You can find it in the Filter By... sidebar under Occasions/Seasons. In addition to Seasonal which indicates the overall organization or focus of the book, you can also filter on one or more individual seasons.

Thank you! I was not aware of that filter! But I would still love to know if folks have particular favorites in this category.

I just used that filter. It is finally not very helpful. Using Spring only turns up books that focus exclusively on that season and have that word in the title. So if the goal is to find books organized by season that includes all seasons (which seems to be a much larger and more distinguished group of books), that will not work.

I love Nigel Slater's Kitchen Diaries books plus his more recent Greenfeast books. Also Sunday Suppers at Lucques by Suzanne Goin, The Modern Cook's Year by Anna Jones and Susie Middleton's books are seasonal.

If you want to find books that include all seasons then you would use the Seasonal filter, which categories books with recipes organized by several seasons - this is that filter applied to the Library. If you know of any books that should have that tag applied but it is missing please let us know, either here in this post or by emailing using the Contact link at top right.

Many thanks!  Still..WAY too many to go through there!  Again, I'd love to hear ones that folks especially like!  Suzanne Goin's books are wonderful-- I do have those but had forgotten about them.  And it's great to learn about the others recommended!

I certainly understand your interest.  It is hard to find English language books cooking with the season.  Find more magazines than books that more or less cook with seasonal ingredients.  When I think of seasonal cooking, it also applies to seafood and fish.

I like The Seasonal Jewish Kitchen by Amelia Saltsman. It is organized by season, actually two months per chapter, beginning with September & October for the Jewish New Year. It has a wide variety of recipes hailing from cultures all over the world, including Tunisia, Iran and Mexico.

In addition to those above I would add Jamie at Home by Jamie Oliver, The New Vegetarian Epicure by Anna Thomas, Ruffage by Abra Berrens, and Simply in Season by Mary Beth Lind. Some of my most used books are organized this way.

I'm an avid gardener, so I have a fair number of "seasonal" books on my shelf, especially those with a lot of vegetable/fruit forward recipes.

One underdog (on only 18 bookshelves) that I enjoy is Bounty from the Box. There are several different contributors to the book, so it has a much more varied "voice" and selection of recipes than you normally see in a cookbook.

The Lavender Cookbook is a fun one that is organized by seasons, and the person who wrote it was a caterer, so it has a lot of recipes suitable for entertaining and outdoor meals, without being fussy.

I also enjoy Diane Philips' Happy Holidays - it covers 12 holidays through the year: New Year's, Valentine's Day, Passover, Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day, 4th of July, Rosh Hashanah, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Like most of her books most of the recipes have do-ahead elements, which I love.

Jane - I have a couple of "seasonal" books that don't have the tag - The Garden-Fresh Vegetable Cookbook as well as the lavender one mentioned above,

anightowl, thanks, I've added the "Seasonal" tag to both of the books you mentioned.

Thank you Deborah. :)

Quite possibly because I've only had it a week but Trine Hahnemann's Scandinavian Green has currently got my attention. It's laid out by season but is only vegetarian.

Also, Trine Hahnemann's The Scandinavian Cookbook is organized by month, which would be close to a seasonal organization.

I love seasonal cookbooks.. but when you shift from northern hemisphere (where my collection started) to southern hemisphere it all gets a little confusing... I even went through my favourite and added in the equivalent months for Australia vs UK!! My favourites are The Cookery Year, and Katie Stewart's The Times' Calendar Cookbook.  Australian seasons really do vary depending on where in this world's largest island or smallest continent you're located!

I use Vegetable of the Day by Kate McMillan -- Seasonal vegtable recipes for everydayof the year.

Another one that is organized by season is The Flexitarian Table by Peter Berley --- has menus that include meat and meatless options.

chriswinans -- Thanks, I've added the Seasonal tag to these two books, both of which are indexed: Vegetable of the Day and The Flexitarian Table.

I have several seasonal favorites: - Now & Again, by Julia Turshen - the first Food52 cookbook (I would guess the second is also seasonal)...so many great recipes but I keep going back to the corn chowder and the secret ingredient cookies, which are more than the sum of their parts - Dishing up the Dirt, by Andrea Bemis - the mint chocolate chip cookies are absolutely delicious...

Ooh also! Canal House Cooks Every Day goes through their year of cooking. I haven’t cooked a lot from it but it’s a delight to read through And A New Way to Dinner by Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, especially if you’re into planning and cooking for the week. They give four weekly menus per season. That’s a fun one.
