Notes about this book

  • nomadchowwoman on July 17, 2010

Always have loved this cookbook, which is full of very good recipes, perfect for casual entertaining. My favorites are the ones for a mustardy chicken salad w/apricots and the white bean and goat cheese (but do cut the amount of goat cheese!) salad.

a hit every time I've made this - easy to make the scallop mixture ahead of time, then assemble and pop in the oven at the last minute.

This is a wonderful and most delicious recipe and makes quite a few servings. I use Gruyere cheese and have made it with shrimp for a guest who was allergic to scallops. I also use a thin baguette, which I slice thinly and toast. One of the best appetizers I have ever made and so full of flavor!

  • June Taylor chicken legs

    • cwcooks on January 08, 2010

great for a party - if not cut recipe in half (down to 10-12 drumsticks) sub veg oil for olive and use 1/2 as much rice wine vinegar instead of total white wine if you want.

  • Olga's avgolemono soup

Ingredient list here is wrong. Correct is: 2 small chickens, cut into serving pieces 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon dried oregano ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted ½ cup white rice 6 large eggs, separated 1 cup water Juice of 3 lemons

  • Green beans with warm mustard vinaigrette

    • Lee on May 26, 2017

This calls for olive oil. Walnut or hazelnut oils are good too.

  • Summer vegetable couscous

In this world of cookbook ownership it is hard to stay on top of new cookbooks and still be respectful to your tried and true. So I took a step back in time to Sarsh Leah Chase’s amazing Open House Cookbook ( this cookbook sits next to all my Silver Palettes, reuniting old friends! This was a strong couscous dish all about freshness and flavor. Nothing complicated/just straight forward goodness.,

  • White bean and goat cheese salad

This makes a terrific make-ahead salad for a crowd and has great flavor!

  • Asparagus with sesame mayonnaise

Excellent make ahead salad with terrific flavors!

  • Roasted chicken

    • Yuanboa on January 04, 2026

This recipe sounded great. We were disappointed as there was no orange flavor and it should include more water to prevent scorching the pan

  • Grilled pork tenderloin with port, plums, and apricots

    • bktravels on October 06, 2024

The title of the recipe calls for pork tenderloin, but the recipe is actually for a 4 ib loin! We adjusted amounts and cooking times to make a tenderloin. It was very nice, butstill too much sauce even after slashing amounts. It was a fruity marinade and sauce that moistened the pork nicely. I think next time I might use just plums instead of a combination with apricots. We served it with corn fritters (Jimmy Schmidt's Cooking for All Seasons) and green beans with cashews (Silver Palate). Lovely end of the garden dinner with the last of our green beans and farmers' market corn.

  • Tri-berry muffins

    • Rachaelsb on January 02, 2014

These are wonderful!!! Light, moist and so fruity.
