Notes about this book

  • ellabee on March 01, 2015

March 2015 - Kindle $2.50ish. Several recipes of interest, and very seasonal organization from late fall through the holidays to the various stages of a real winter -- including "early spring" and Easter (still cold weather in New England). Ebook failures: no full listing of recipes anywhere, either in table of contents or as chapter ToCs; menus (with links to recipes) dotted throughout are not listed in ToCs; index opens to page w clickable letters of the alphabet, a good approach -- ruined by having letters jammed so close together it's impossible to hit correct one with fingers and even difficult with stylus. WTF, Workman e-"editor"??

I have the same combination title. A gem of a cookbook.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Auntie's meat loaf

    • Rachaelsb on December 05, 2020

Good...not the special I had hoped for.

    • Rlancto on January 04, 2026

This makes A LOT! I would half it unless you want to have a ton left for leftovers, which is also a good idea. It was a little wet so be careful with the bread and milk ratio. I would have left the tomato off the top so the bacon could get a little more crisp. But overall it had a nice flavor.

  • Autumn pork roast

    • lizwinn on October 12, 2010

      So yummy..........

  • Banana bread

    • Rachaelsb on November 19, 2020

Really tasty but not the richness I was looking for. Would make again...but still in search of the perfect banana bread recipe. Suggestions welcome!!

    • Jkbailey on June 25, 2024

@rachaelsb the best banana bread recipe I’ve found is smitten kitchen’s ultimate banana bread. After trying hundreds, it’s my go to.

  • Corn and chorizo cazuela

    • lizwinn on October 12, 2010

I make this with roasted Hatch chiles. Great for brunch.

    • libraryhead on April 09, 2015

      Loved this.

  • Cornmeal crêpes with chèvre and hot pepper jelly

    • ellabee on March 02, 2015

Great for entertaining, as the crepes can be made, filled, and set in the baking dish a day ahead, then baked at the last minute.

  • Curried lentil soup with chutney butter

    • Christinalego on November 01, 2022

This was a little boring, but when I heated it up the next day I added carrots, green pepper and some dried hot pepper mix and it was much better then.

  • Farewell-to-friends fettucine

    • ntt2 on February 27, 2012

      Excellent Pasta Meat Sauce!

    • libraryhead on April 09, 2015

Not calorie conscious, but so good. Works with canned tomatoes too.

  • Flemish endive soup

    • ntt2 on February 27, 2012

      Very Good Soup!

  • Four-bean chili

    • Rachaelsb on January 23, 2018

Great chili! Lots of layers to flavor.

  • Freda's beef stew

    • Rachaelsb on January 15, 2018

Traditional, straightforward, satisfying, hearty beef stew. I added a splash of red wine and decided to thicken a bit with 1/2 c. h2o and 1 1/2t. Corn starch.

    • Christinalego on May 31, 2023

Wonderful and easy! I used chicken broth.

  • Grilled chicken breasts with lemon and rosemary

    • Rachaelsb on January 04, 2018

Delicious...nice change and spices give it wonderful sweet/tangy kick. We had with egg noodles and salad. great winter night dish.

  • Iced almonds

    • Mtbike5280 on January 27, 2026

These were simple and easy to prepare. The hardest part was waiting for them to cool before eating them. Be careful that sugar is really hot.

  • Mashed potatoes with garlic and olive oil

    • Rachaelsb on December 05, 2020

NIce flavor but texture a bit like thick paste. I used Yukon potatoes as what I had so will try agin with red potatoes as per recipe. ALso could have used more garlic.

  • Mr. Powers's broccoli and mustard seed soup

    • Lee on October 26, 2014

      Superb

  • My very favorite asparagus vinaigrette

    • libraryhead on April 09, 2015

I have made this dozens of times -- it truly deserves the name.

  • Nantucket cranberry relish

    • julie_3vrfq4 on February 03, 2026

Easy and delicious. I half the recipe. It makes a lot.

  • Nantucket tomato soup

    • clouse91 on December 11, 2013

I used 2 quarts of home-canned tomatoes instead of fresh tomatoes. Instead of fresh basil, I added about two tablespoons of prepared basil pesto. The addition of carrots and celery make this soup healthier, but hard to blend as smooth as other tomato soups. Was delicious with a splash of heavy cream.

    • Lee on September 21, 2018

      Delicious!

  • Oatmeal bread

    • Rachaelsb on October 20, 2019

I have struggled with bread baking but this has really helped me turn the corner. So easy. So delicious. Texture and taste are wonderful. Everything I hope a bread to be. Perfect for breakfast as toast or accompaniment to rich stew or soup.

    • foodgloriousfood on October 01, 2022

Fine textured and a little sweet and toasts well, would be great with a pumpkin soup.

  • Perciatelli with shiitake mushrooms and fresh ginger

    • ntt2 on February 17, 2012

This is an excellent make ahead salad -- found Perciatelli a tad "big" and so usually substitute another pasta.

  • Pilgrim's porridge

    • JELogan on November 01, 2020

This makes a LOT of porridge. Unless you are feeding a large family, definitely cut it in half. Quite boozy, but satisfying on a cold night. Didn't bother with the croutons, but gave it a sprinkling of Parmesan before serving. Delicious.

  • Pine nut macaroons

    • ntt2 on February 27, 2012

      Delish!

  • Portuguese pork with clams alentejana

    • Rlancto on January 04, 2026

Overall a well flavored recipe. I wish it used another cut of pork. Cut up lean pork loin just gets too dry and tough. But the sauce part was great. I used canned whole clams which worked out great as well since no stores around me had fresh.

  • Pumpkin, prosciutto, and Parmesan lasagna

    • julie_3vrfq4 on February 03, 2026

      Haven’t made for years. Delicious.

  • Slow-cooked beef stew

    • lizwinn on October 12, 2010

I usually use leftover roasted root vegetables in this. Great recipe as is....

  • Spaghetti with meatballs

    • Rachaelsb on January 23, 2018

Very satisfying and filling. Not a lot of punch to recipe- more intensely comforting and balanced.

  • Stifado

    • lizwinn on October 12, 2010

      Another family favorite.

  • Wild rice and cider pilaf

    • MollyB on December 21, 2025

Excellent recipe, very nice with pork. Cherries would be good in place of the raisins. However, the amount of liquid was way too much for the cultivated wild rice I used - maybe it absorbs less than wild-harvested wild rice? I would cut the liquid ingredients in half next time.
