Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Chicken braised in tamarind and coriander

    • treay on January 11, 2026

I had to adjust some of the ingredients because I used a whole chicken instead of drumsticks. My pictures don't look much as the one from the book, but I must say that it is one of the most delicious chicken recipes I have tried in a while. Love the depth of flavours. Even hubby thought it was delicious, and he's not a big fan of Asian cuisine. I served it with coconut rice topped with some homemade crunchy chilli oil. Definitely a recipe to repeat, and it is not difficult at all. Scrumptious!!!

  • Fried eggs tempra with onions and kecap manis

    • meggan on October 08, 2024

Essentially some fried eggs with some saucy onions but who doesn't like that?

    • hirsheys on November 12, 2025

Tasty and easy. Enough sauce for a couple extra eggs. Needs rice on side to sop up yummy sauce.

  • Pandan jasmine rice

    • hirsheys on May 31, 2026

Made in the rice cooker. Not convinced that it’s worth the effort.

  • Chicken in red sauce

    • jenburkholder on March 11, 2025

Trying to use up ketchup and this caught my eye, since I already had lemongrass and clearance chicken thighs in the fridge. Overall, an easy, tasty dish, but I did tweak a bit. It needed notably more liquid, so I added more tomatoes. I also ended up shredding the chicken into the sauce, since it was falling apart by that point anyways.

  • Lime leaf chicken curry

    • stephanie_rkbsca on May 17, 2026

Tasty but we didn’t have a good processor so it ended up being difficult and we didn’t get the flavor we hoped for.

  • 8-hour ox cheek rendang

    • RCL on January 02, 2026

Flavour was lovely but was overcooked for me, mine needed an hour or so less in the oven

    • FieryFantail on January 30, 2026

Loved this. I also reduced the cooking time.

  • Peranakan prawn and pineapple curry

    • hirsheys on May 31, 2026

Interesting, but I think it’s missing a sour note (pineapple too sweet?) or something? I will keep trying to tweak the leftovers to my taste, but it’s oddly flat for a dish with so many flavors… That said, it’s easy enough.

  • Roast pumpkin masak lemak

    • alysekstokes on October 17, 2025

An absolutely delicious and cozy fall dish. I used red kuri squash and it soaked up the sauce beautifully. I served this with rice and a cucumber, red onion, and lime salad for an easy weeknight dinner.

  • Tamil egg curry

    • treay on June 25, 2025

This was a nice recipe and quite easy to do. The worst part was peeling the eggs. I followed the recipe and cook them only for 8 minutes and then plunged them into ice-cold water to stop the cooking. It worked, they were still creamy, but I did not manage to get a single one peeled without breaking it down into pieces. I served it with basmati rice topped with homemade Burmese Balachaung condiment, homemade tomato chutney and pappadums. Lovely meal.

    • FieryFantail on May 22, 2026

Perfectly jammy eggs in a warm balanced curry. Really tasty!

  • Mum's soy-braised pork belly and shiitake mushrooms

    • RCL on January 02, 2026

Didn’t really enjoy this, too oily

    • stephanie_rkbsca on May 17, 2026

So tasty and flavorful. The dried mushrooms really soak up the flavor in the braising juice. The pork ends up being so tender.

  • Braised egg tofu with mushrooms and sugar snaps

    • eclairea on February 04, 2026

Delicious. Great combo of flavours and textures, and egg tofu is one of my new fave ingredients!

  • Green beans with turmeric and toasted coconut

    • jenburkholder on December 01, 2025

Hit at Friendsgiving. Store only had sweetened coconut, but I decided to try it, and, once balanced with extra salt and lime, it didn't feel overly sweet.

  • Cucumber, pineapple and peanut rojak with tamarind dressing

    • RCL on January 02, 2026

      Lovely and refreshing

    • FieryFantail on March 02, 2026

Received rave reviews from the family!

    • hirsheys on May 31, 2026

Tasty. The good parts of rojak, for sure. Go heavy on the peanuts. (Might also be good with cilantro instead of mint?)

  • Steamed asparagus with garlicky black bean sauce

    • jenburkholder on March 11, 2025

Turned this into a stir fry since I didn’t want to use another pan. Just cooked off the aromatics before adding asparagus, sautéed for a bit and then added sauce. Easy and good.

  • Steamed aubergines with cherry tomato sambal

    • treay on January 11, 2026

The tomato sambal was a bit spicy but the fresh herbs helped to counteract the heat. Will make it again for sure.

  • Char bee hoon with wild garlic and fried tofu

    • alysekstokes on May 28, 2026

Subbed garlic scapes for wild garlic and mung bean vermicelli for rice vermicelli. This was delicious, and I think it would have been even better with the rice noodles!

  • Clay pot rice with shiitake and Chinese sausage

    • Karinett on August 25, 2025

Didn't have any Chinese sausage so used chicken marinated in oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, shaoxing wine and sesame oil. The technique to fry garlic and the rice in oil before adding the broth/other ingredients resulted in the yummy charred rice that characterizes this dish :D

  • BBQ chicken satay with tamarind peanut sauce

    • Bessp on July 03, 2025

The chicken was quite nice, but the sauce was a miss for us. I used sunflower butter instead of peanut butter and cooked it under the broiler. I loved the marinade, next time I'll probably leave out the tamarind in the sauce and see how that goes. I put the red onion on the skewers with the chicken to get a bit of char on it.

  • Sticky kecap manis and lime chicken wings

    • treay on January 11, 2026

Simple to make and delicious! A perfect midweek meal. Served with Steamed aubergines with cherry tomato sambal.
