Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Sweet and sour cabbage soup

    • Laura on January 21, 2013

Pg. 76. I don't know how this would have turned out as written -- I was a bit fearful that it would be bland and uninteresting. So I made significant changes: I used homemade chicken stock instead of water; added 1/2 lb chopped cooked bacon; doubled the tomatoes and kale; and sprinkled the finished soup with grated parmigiano reggiano. It was much better than I was expecting -- husband really liked it.

  • Sweet potato-carrot soup

    • TrishaCP on July 01, 2013

I wanted to like this recipe, as it's nice and easy- sweet potatoes, carrots and apples are roasted and then pureed into a soup. Somehow, the carrot just didn't work for me- the roasting brought out an earthiness to it that for some reason didn't go well with the other veg. The recipe calls for topping the soup with either dried cranberries, sauteed mushrooms or kippered salmon, but none of those choices appealed to me. It would definitely benefit from a topping to highlight more flavors from what is otherwise a fairly bland soup.

Really good - liked by H&N. Make at least double quantity.

    • Brittania on May 06, 2026

      No need to peel apple.

  • Spinach salad with nectarine, blueberries, and lime balsamic vinaigrette

    • Brittania on February 24, 2026

      Tasty dressing.

  • Turkey tagine

    • Laura on January 07, 2013

Pg. 130. I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was. I made it as written with the only change that I added about 1/2 tsp of turmeric. A nice way to cook boneless turkey breast.

  • Sake-poached salmon with ginger gremolata

    • Laura on February 06, 2011

Pg. 152. Great way to cook salmon.

  • Broccoli balsamico

    • Rowma on April 25, 2018

This is good -- tangy and tasty. Also very easy and quick.

  • Blueberry-lemon trifle

    • Brittania on February 24, 2026

Very good. Use whole blueberries in layers, too.

  • Chocolate-nut chewies

    • jzanger on January 30, 2011

Too sweet, which brought down the intensity of the good quality cocoa I used. Also, cookies didn't spread I suspect because I chopped both the hazelnuts and walnuts. I would supplement some more cocoa for some sugar next time, and maybe add a little vanilla and a bit of espresso to boost the chocolate flavor. I think there are better recipes out there for this kind of cookie.
