Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Spinach, bacon, and corn salad

    • darylm503 on September 02, 2022

Also really good if you use candied walnuts. I've added mandarin orange segments and pistachio nuts for delicious variation.

  • Bacon, beans, and beer chili

    • sturlington on March 26, 2013

This is probably one of my favorite recipes from this book. I substituted ground turkey with good results. This chili is flavorful, dark and meaty but not overly hot.

    • nefret12 on March 29, 2019

This was so good!! It definitely doesn't taste like it was so quick and easy to make.

  • Lemon grass and white bean turkey chili

    • sturlington on June 10, 2014

Everyone enjoyed. I cut down on the spices to keep it from being too hot for the kiddo. I also omitted coconut milk because that is not a flavor everyone in the family enjoys, but I kept the stock the same to keep it from being too soupy. It probably didn't have as much flavor that way, but it was still tasty and an easy enough dinner. I substituted kale for spinach and that worked fine.

  • Mustard-thyme chicken with white wine pan sauce

    • Cheri on July 18, 2012

This was tasty. Careful with the sauce, it thickens quickly, and really need to whisk when adding cornstarch (not my usual method for a sauce) or it will clump. Mustard and thyme balance seems just right.

  • Beef stroganoff with egg noodles and sour cream

    • BethNH on February 23, 2017

There was nothing good about this recipe except for the fact that it was simple. It didn't taste bad but it certainly did not taste good. We ate our portions and threw away what was still in the pan.

  • Lemon mango margarita

    • BethNH on February 18, 2017

A slushie for adults. We made 1/2 recipe and it filled two large margarita glasses so I can't imagine that a full recipe is 2 servings. This was delicious! Used mango liqueur because I had some.

  • Chinese pie (What the rest of the world calls shepherd's pie)

    • BethNH on February 17, 2017

We love this version of Shepherd's Pie. It's very simple and quick to make. It includes both canned corn and creamed corn as well as packet of brown gravy mix. It's just like the shepherd's pie I grew up with - only better.

  • Barbecue pulled chicken nachos

    • sturlington on March 26, 2013

I made these for a family fun night by special request. Overall, they were very good, although the recipe needed some tweaking. First, although the recipe specifies to heat the chicken in the microwave, I didn't find this was necessary (I don't own a microwave). Everything got hot enough in the oven for 10 minutes. Also, I felt this recipe had far too much stuff on it. I omitted the beans and corn, but kept the jalapenos -- nachos require whole jalapeno rings, in my opinion. I tink this recipe might also be good if the chicken were omitted and the beans and corn were left on. Well, this recipe is amenable to tinkering and the nachos were pretty tasty. I ate far too many of them!

  • Panko-crusted chicken cutlets with roasted tomatoes and garlic

    • sturlington on October 30, 2013

Tasty. I think the timing is off, or maybe it is placement in the oven, but my chicken was not getting nicely browned on the bottom rack. I ended up running it under the broiler for a couple of minutes.

  • Stir-fry ravioli with ground turkey and peppers

    • sturlington on November 10, 2014

This looked better on paper than in execution. Recipe did not cohere well. Would not make again. p175

  • Ginger-teriyaki cheeseburgers

    • nefret12 on March 29, 2019

This was really good!! Used boursin instead of the goat cheese.

  • Grilled Asian chicken sandwich

    • sturlington on March 26, 2013

I didn't make this as a sandwich. I just used the marinade to pan-roast chicken. Smoked paprika is the secret ingredient. The flavor was smoky, intense and very yummy.

  • Grilled rosemary garlic bread

    • sturlington on March 26, 2013

This was very good garlic bread, and easy to do. The recipe specifies one piece per serving, but it is so tasty that it is easy to overeat. (Printed)

  • Potato tart with Manchego, spinach, and thyme

    • sturlington on January 08, 2013

Thought this was a good side dish for roast chicken. Also would be appropriate for breakfast or with a fried egg. I lightened it up by eliminating one layer of potatoes and a great deal of cheese. Made 1/2013
