Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Winter squash and chickpea soup

    • Breadcrumbs on November 02, 2014

      p. 30 – This soup was a bland, boring disappointment. Perhaps it’s because none of the ingredients are sautéed in advance and they just go into to slow cooker raw that the end result has a non-distinct, one note flavour profile. Nothing could revive this hot mess. Just plain dull and not worth repeating. I’m usually a big fan of MS’s recipes but this one missed the mark by taking some otherwise tasty, seasonal ingredients and combining them to produce this lackluster dish.

  • Turkey breast with lemon, capers, and sage

    • Breadcrumbs on March 18, 2014

      p. 104 - One of the best turkey breast recipes I’ve ever made! This truly exceeded our expectations. MS has you mix herbs, lemon zest, S&P w softened butter then this mixture is spread beneath the skin of the turkey breast. The raw breast is placed in the slow cooker atop some sautéed vegetables and wine is added to the pot. This was so tender, juicy and flavourful. I subbed thyme for the sage. I’m delighted to have discovered this recipe. The fact that its simple to prepare is a huge bonus! Photos here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/829403#8825003

  • Portuguese pulled pork

    • jayg312 on July 26, 2013

Decent dish, but a little bland considering the spices that go in at the beginning. I reduced the juices left at the end and added some more red pepper flakes to that. Did slightly better for leftovers the next day.

One of the problems with a “good book” is that you often find more small things that could be added to make it even better. A mediocre book would still miss them, but you wouldn’t care.

Publishers Text

With the combination of tradition, innovation, and ease that have made her recipes so popular, Michele Scicolone gathers intriguing dishes from every corner of the Mediterranean and streamlines them for the slow cooker. The range is eye-opening: from simplified and freshened classics like Greek shrimp with tomatoes and feta, to Israeli sweet and sour meatballs, to Moroccan vegetable tagine, to coffee-caramel flan from Spain. But Scicolone also serves up a profusion of fascinating lesser-known dishes: a creamy polenta lasagna, a port-braised chicken from Portugal, a spiced frittata from Tunisia, and Bandit's Lamb, as well as her own seductive creations, like Cannoli Cheesecake.
