Gumbis (pg 33) is a recipe from 1842 for a ham-apple-cabbage-onion-bacon-sausage baked stew of Pennsylvania Dutch origins. As my maiden last name was of Pennsylvania Dutch origins, I obviously am obligated to love this. I actually do because the meat-apple-cabbage combination is very much a comfort food mix.
