Delma's Queen Elizabeth squares This was a well received dessert. A great old fashioned Canadian dessert. Page 330 Would definitely make again.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • French toast with grilled peaches and spiced rum-brown sugar sauce

    • raybun on July 18, 2017

This was absolutely the best French toast I have ever eaten. The orange zest and cinnamon really permeate the bread/brioche and the grilled peaches (and nectarines in this case) were delicious. The decadent spiced rum sauce just adds the final flourish. I'll be making this again and again!

  • Cured salmon with avocado and homemade English muffins

    • raybun on September 17, 2017

I just made the salmon part of the recipe. The beets impart the most beautiful hue to the salmon, and the flavours from the lemon and dill really permeate the fish. A very impressive dish, with very little effort. It's ideal for a brunch as it's made 2 days before and I served it with fresh bagels and cream cheese.(Photo)

  • Maple-bacon scones

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

I liked this novel flavour combination, having only had traditional scones before. The lemony pecan scone has a maple vanilla frosting. I only added the candied bacon to the top, as I was a bit wary of adding it to the scone mixture as well. They were very well received by my guests.

  • Mango-lime Dutch baby pancake

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

This is one impressive and quite delicious Dutch baby. Plan to have a little nap afterwards! I replaced the blueberries with balsamic roasted strawberries from another recipe in the book. Definitely a repeat recipe.

  • Salmon banh mi sandwiches

    • bwhip on August 03, 2017

Very good! Interesting and delicious. The salmon marinade is really tasty, and the pickled vegetables give a bright punch. We'll definitely make this one again.

    • Zosia on November 24, 2018

      Salmon marinates overnight.

    • Zosia on November 24, 2018

All of the elements, which are, individually, quick and easy to make, come together to create a fabulous sandwich. Everyone loved it.

  • Goat cheese-stuffed lamb burgers with caramelized red onions

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

Absolutely delicious! My new favourite burger recipe. All the elements complemented each other perfectly.

    • Zosia on November 19, 2017

These are fabulous as beef burgers too.

    • bwhip on March 28, 2020

Oh man, these are really delicious. The onions are great, and combined with the bacon and goat cheese - so tasty. Looking forward to having these again.

    • Kduncan on April 26, 2020

Easy recipe, cooking the onions is what takes the longest. Great flavor, and the addition of the goat cheese really made these pop.

  • Ancho-rubbed steak tacos with pineapple-avocado salsa

    • bwhip on May 27, 2017

These were excellent! The spice rub on the flank steak was spicy and delicious, and the pineapple-avocado salsa gave the dish just the right balance of cool-down, with the spicy sour cream a nice contrast. We'll definitely make this one again.

    • GHolland on April 28, 2024

Enjoyed the pineapple and avocado salsa with the steak…great Saturday night supper

  • Jerk chicken burgers with grilled pineapple

    • Zosia on October 19, 2017

Really delicious. The grilled pineapple is a cooling element and brings sweetness to counteract the spiciness of the chicken. I used only 1 tsp cayenne pepper in the spice blend which was hot enough for our palates, and doctored some store-bought mayonnaise for the herb-lime mayo.

  • Risotto with bacon, mushrooms, and thyme

    • Zosia on October 22, 2017

Hearty, flavourful and delicious. It was also quite rich - even though I used half the butter and oil - so it made more servings than indicated.

  • Pizza dough (all about that base)

    • janeths on April 25, 2026

Worked perfectly. I made one large pizza instead of two.

  • Meatball pizza, the friend maker

    • Zosia on February 07, 2019

This review is for the pizza topping only as I made a different, no knead dough. The components (sauce and spicy meatballs) were individually very good and delicious in combination with the other topping ingredients. I made the meatballs a little smaller so the pizza would be easier to eat and was concerned they would dry out during the second bake but they were still moist.

  • Marinated miso salmon noodles

    • bwhip on December 01, 2017

Very good dinner! The marinade is fabulous, giving great umami to the dish. Like most stir-fries, pretty easy to prep and throw together once you’ve marinated for 24 hours. The recipe just calls for “egg noodles,” but doesn’t really say what size or type. Photo looked about the same size as spaghetti, and I was able to find some fresh (cooked) chow main noodles in the refrigerator case at an Asian market which worked great.

  • Shrimp and tofu pad Thai

    • bwhip on November 14, 2017

Very tasty, and quite easy to put together. Nice fresh flavor, and great combination of spicy and sweet.

  • Five-spice beef and broccolini

    • Zosia on August 29, 2018

      Beef marinates overnight.

    • Zosia on September 04, 2018

This dish had incredible flavour and the beef was extremely tender but not everyone appreciated the 5-spice flavour, which was quite strong considering how little went into it.

  • Hoisin chicken drumsticks

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

If you can brine in the morning this makes a quick midweek supper. The hoisin sauce is delicious. I bypassed the browning stage and just poured the sauce over the brined chicken and whacked it in the oven. The family really enjoyed it.

    • Zosia on February 05, 2018

Between the brine and the tasty sauce, the chicken ended up moist and very flavourful. I used skinless thighs and skipped the browning step, roasting it an extra 15 minutes to compensate. I also doubled the bok choy and added broccoli to the mix; both were very good with the sauce.

  • Paprika-coriander chicken with apricot couscous

    • michelleiscooking.com on August 18, 2017

This recipe is very flavourful. I had fresh peaches, and so used them, also I used ground coriander. - still fantastic! I highly recommend giving this recipe a try. I will be making this again.

    • janeths on April 27, 2026

This is good but not as flavourful as I expected.

  • Pan-roasted pork chops with maple-sage apples and cauliflower mash

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

Very tasty and flavourful chops. The brining step really makes a difference. The cauliflower mash was much appreciated by the adults, the child turned her nose up at it. The maple sage apples are divine, and would go very well with roast chicken or duck too.

  • Bangers and mash

    • raybun on July 20, 2017

All the elements here are delicious. Creamy mash, rich onion gravy and roasted sausages, comfort food at its best.

  • Garlic and rosemary Hasselback potatoes

    • janeths on June 03, 2026

Good but I think I have made Hasselback potatoes with more flavour.

  • Sweet potato wedges with curry mayo dip

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

A lovely side dish, crispy spicy sweet potato wedges with a really tasty curry mayonnaise. Very moorish, they disappeared very quickly!

  • Sriracha-roasted cauliflower

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

I always welcome a new way to roast cauliflower, a frequent vegetable on my plate since I started the 5:2 (down 25lbs since Feb!- recommended by some lovely people on EYB). This recipe gives it an Asian spin, and was very tasty.

    • Zosia on October 27, 2017

Really flavourful version of roasted cauliflower that I'll make again. I replaced the fish sauce with extra soy sauce to keep it vegetarian.

  • My mom's chocolate chip cookies

    • Hoodywho on May 20, 2026

Little sweeter than I was wanting. Will cut back some sugar next time

  • Smashed Pavlova with citrus curd and berries

    • raybun on July 20, 2017

Very good dessert, perfect for entertaining a crowd. Could also do individual meringue nests. The tangy curd offsets the sweet chewy meringue, and any in season fruit would work.

  • Blueberry-rhubarb galette

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

A lovely galette, I subbed the blueberries with strawberries and sprinkled some ground almonds under the fruit to absorb the excess juice. Great pastry, although unsure what the vodka adds to it.

  • Salted caramel apple parfaits

    • raybun on July 13, 2017

There is nothing not to like in this recipe, unless you are diabetic! The salted caramel sauce is very similar to Delias butterscotch sauce that I've been making for years. Sautéed cinnamon apples, crunchy pecan granola & whipped cream (or Greek yogurt in this case) top of this carb coma dessert. Big yum!
