This is the BEST whole foods plant based cookbook I have ever cooked from. Pretty much every recipe is a winner.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Ginger carrot soup

    • Churchim808 on August 09, 2025

This is pretty good. I cheated and sautéed the onions in some oil and used lightly salted vegetable broth. At first I purred it with my immersion blender but then decided for a smoother texture which required the vitamin.

  • Mushroom barley soup

    • CourtneyT on January 31, 2024

Good basic soup. Nothing exciting but perfect to use up leftover veg.

  • Green bean and mushroom Stroganoff

    • CourtneyT on January 10, 2025

This is quite nice. I will admit to cheating and throwing some mascarpone cheese in at the very end because I had a small quantity lurking in the fridge that needed to be used, but I did taste the sauce before I added the cheese and it was lovely. It all came together quickly and is great for those nights when you want to keep your gut microbiome happy.

  • West African red bean and sweet potato stew

    • claire_txa051 on January 11, 2026

Would up the cumin, personally, but otherwise a heartening stew perfect for winter. Great choice for plant proteins!

  • Szechuan tempeh and broccoli

    • hbakke on July 07, 2022

Tempeh was tasty from the marinade, but the effort of making 2 different sauces and a marinade wasn't worth it in the end. I'm not sure if the author is soy sauce averse, but I think prep time (and my patience) could have benefited from replacing a few sauce ingredients with tamari or soy sauce. Not a repeat for me.

  • Millet risotto with mushrooms, white beans, and spinach

    • KangaRue on February 23, 2026

Made on 02/23/2026. Sort of bland due to lack of spices. Omitted the miso, but added more vegan chick'n broth powder. Finished with a dash of Yondu sauce for added umami flavor.

  • Chickpea-cauliflower scramble

    • Churchim808 on August 15, 2025

This isn’t bad. It is a no-fat and no-salt recipe but I still added both. Still quite healthy. I’m eating it with toast and it really is quite tasty.

  • BROL bowl with sautéed greens

    • claire_txa051 on May 04, 2026

Great! Fibermaxxing for sure. We had wheat berries on hand, so replaced them for the rye and worked just fine.

  • Mango-raspberry chia pudding

    • CourtneyT on March 23, 2024

This makes two very generous servings. Could stretch to four if you topped with fresh fruit. Extremely easy and very nice. A good healthy option if you’re trying to avoid added sugar and lots of fiber for gut health.

  • Umami sauce redux

    • hbakke on July 07, 2022

Somewhat flavorful, but more watery than I thought it would be.

Publishers Text

From Michael Greger, M.D., FACLM, the author of the New York Times bestseller How Not to Die, comes a four-color, fully illustrated cookbook that shares the science of long-term weight-loss success.

Dr. Michael Greger founded the viral website Nutritionfacts.org with the aim to educate the public about what healthy eating looks like and connect them with a community through food-related podcasts, videos, and blogs. Since then, Nutritionfacts.org has grown and so has Dr. Greger's platform. How Not to Die and The How Not to Die Cookbook were instant hits, and now he's back with a new book about mindful dieting—how to eat well, lose, and keep unwanted weight off in a healthy, accessible way that's not so much a diet as it is a lifestyle.

Greger offers readers delicious yet healthy options that allow them to ditch the idea of "dieting" altogether. As outlined in his book How Not to Diet, Greger believes that identifying the twenty-one weight-loss accelerators in our bodies and incorporating new, cutting-edge medical discoveries are integral in putting an end to the all-consuming activity of counting calories and getting involved in expensive juice cleanses and Weight Watchers schemes.

The How Not to Diet Cookbook is primed to be a revolutionary new addition to the cookbook industry: incredibly effective and designed for everyone looking to make changes to their dietary habits to improve their quality of life, weight loss notwithstanding.
