Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Lighter broccoli and cheese soup

    • chawkins on December 19, 2019

This was okay, certainly lighter than most other broccoli cheese soup, but the cheese flavor did not come through even though I used sharp cheddar. Did not have instant oatmeal, so used old fashioned.

  • Roasted cauliflower and paprika soup

    • stepharama1 on January 21, 2026

This is a wonderful winter soup. Roasting the cauliflower as the recipe instructs adds more flavor to the soup.

  • Winter melon soup with smoky ham

    • Rinshin on October 07, 2018

Did not have exact ingredients but had the most important ingredient to make this which is winter melon. Had to use 1/3 homemade turkey stock from the freezer and 2/3 stock made from Shantun paste (Japanese refrigerated paste for making anything Chinese) in place of chicken stock. Added 1 T sake as well. For limited number of ingredients, this is an excellent soup. The only negative was the size of wintermelon slices. Just saying 1/2 in slice makes the slices too big to eat with spoon. Wish the slices were smaller or better yet cubed. The use of white pepper instead of black pepper is important for taste here. Made again this time using homemade crab stock from Dungeness crab shells. Instead of using ham, added premade shrimp wonton and lots of cut up pea sprouts added at the last minute. Winter melon pieces were silky smooth with beautiful green hue because I did not completely remove skin to retain the the color of lime green. Delicious and very satisfying.

  • Spicy roasted poblano and potato chowder

    • chawkins on October 24, 2019

Rich and creamy and delicious but not spicy. Next time I make this, I'll test the poblano chiles for heat and add couple of jalapeno if needed.

  • Spinach and sun-dried tomato scones

    • lean1 on December 07, 2024

So easy to make. Mixed the whole recipe in a cuisinart. Light and airy with lovely bites of sun dried tomato. Used lettuce mix instead of spinach. Will make often
