Curried Creamed Chicken (pg. 85) -- this book claims to be the first cookbook on curry. I certainly remember this recipe from childhood although it was unlikely Mother used this particular cookbook. The recipe is essentially "make creamed chicken for a family (4 cups chicken). Add a teaspoon of curry spice. Optionally add some chopped chutney. Serve over toast. Call it a new exotic dish "curried creamed chicken." Yes, it was as mildly spiced and as totally Western as the description sounds. But it still makes a nice comforting food -- especially good when recovering from illness or half the family is gone and you want a quick and easy meal. Or if you want an authentic, retro 1950's dish.

Publishers Text

This is the first book ever published on curry dishes, either in this country or abroad. 178 curry recipes have been adapted to the American table and presented in suitable menus for the delight of all who enjoy food marvelously flavored with the blend of spices known as curry. These are all easily-prepared recipes for brunch or lunch, supper, dinner, or a barbecue party. Florence Brobeck gives directions for the curries she has discovered through the years in Indian, Malayan, and Hawaiian restaurants of New York, and in London; for curries which world-travelers have given her from India and the Indian Ocean area.
