Notes about this book

  • IvyManning on April 20, 2018

This book is decent, but it includes recipes that call for you to cook using the Low setting on the Slow Cook function, which for the record is not recommended by the manufacturer. The temperatures on Low are too low to cook food safely, according to the people at Instant Pot.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Meat and potatoes beef stew

    • Zosia on May 09, 2019

This is a good, basic recipe upon which to build. The meat was tender and the sauce was tasty with the herbs really coming through. I prefer stews with a larger variety of vegetables so I'll have to play with this one a little if I make it again.

    • IowanCorn on February 15, 2025

Used a teaspoon of fish sauce since I didn't have any W. sauce on hand and crushed long pepper for the black pepper. This is a spicy stew, but not overly heat-heavy. We had biscuits to help sop up the sauce.

  • Barbecue pork shoulder

    • IowanCorn on March 26, 2026

An absurdly simple recipe that worked really well for a weeknight dinner. I used Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, which is popular here in Iowa, so it turned out sweet and slightly spicy, and perfect for sandwiches.

  • Spicy pork shoulder in salsa

    • Zosia on September 16, 2018

The timing worked perfectly, producing moist, tender, sliceable meat. The sauce is only as good as the salsa you use; mine needed quite a bit of extra flavouring at the end even after I reduced it.

    • IowanCorn on March 02, 2025

Extremely easy dish to put together. I used a picante salsa of medium heat, and then chopped the cooked meat to put that and the sauce over egg noodles and sprinkled cheese over the top. Made a tasty supper when I wasn't really in the mood to cook supper. Definitely a keeper in the rotation.

  • Sun-dried tomato and Parmesan polenta

    • patioweather on September 05, 2022

The technique was great but I needed to add salt and pepper.

  • Quick white bean and turkey chili

    • Zosia on July 24, 2020

Tasty, especially with all of the typical chili toppings. I did replace half the chile powder with a mix of ancho and chipotle chile powders as the blend I have is quite mild, and I added cumin before I realized it wasn't called for in this recipe, but was from another I had looked at. It was a hit served over baked potatoes.

  • Quick chorizo and tortilla chip chili

    • hbakke on February 01, 2023

Nice basic chili. I used soyrizo as a substitution for chorizo sausage and kept getting the burn error on my pressure cooker. I had to add 3-4 cups of water for it to finally come to pressure. I don't know if my substitution screwed up the recipe, but I did find it odd that besides the little bit of juice from the canned tomatoes, there is no liquid added to this chili.

  • Smoky potato and kale soup

    • Laurendmck on November 20, 2018

This was very tasty! The only thing is the soup never reached simmer on the high setting of saute. Finally I simply put the potatoes and kale in, as directed, but set the IP for manual, 3 minutes, and it turned out great. It's a pressure cooker, after all. I don't think saute is useful for six cups of liquid. It seems that after you cook the onions and garlic you could just cook the rest all at once with the pressure cooker function. Forget cooking the potatoes separately. That's what I would do next time. The chipotle in adobo is a great touch, don't skip it.

    • Zosia on April 23, 2024

Really delicious, low-effort soup. I followed Laurendmck's advice and didn't pre-cook the potatoes. Instead, I added them, diced, to the sauteed onions, etc and stock, cooked 8 minutes high pressure with natural release, then added baby kale to the hot soup at the end.

  • Bacon, corn, and potato chowder

    • IowanCorn on November 04, 2024

A basic soup that I could have made easily on the stovetop, but cooking the potatoes in the pressure cooker was easy and hands off.

  • Delicata squash soup with crème fraîche

    • IowanCorn on December 15, 2024

I like this soup. Most squash soups to me seem too salty, but I left out the salt, using the salt in the bullion season the soup and it was perfect. Also, I used sour cream rather than creme freshe, but it worked fine.

  • Pressure-cooker “baked” potatoes

    • hbakke on February 15, 2023

This resulted in perfectly cooked russet potatoes. Will repeat.

  • Bacon-y refried beans

    • hbakke on August 01, 2023

I made this vegetarian and left out the bacon, using a smoky chile powder to add the missing smoked flavor. My beans were pretty old, so the beans weren't as creamy as they could have been. Flavor was delicious though. I would make this again.

  • Shredded chicken tacos with tomato and lime

    • cucinahalcon on November 20, 2018

So delicious. The mix of thighs and breasts is really good.

  • Ziti with Italian sausage

    • IowanCorn on April 14, 2025

A quick easy dish for a weeknight. I had good results with this one, even if I halved the amount of crushed tomatoes - used diced- and only 2 hours in the electric canner on slow cook. I made sure the sausage was properly cooked through on sauté, with the veg before I added the tomatoes and ziti. It still was very similar to 'hamburger helper' but one I didn't have to pay much attention to while it was cooking.

  • Turkey and lime slow-cooker chili

    • IowanCorn on April 06, 2026

The lime juice really makes this recipe tasty. I did decrease the amount of chili powder by a tablespoon, and a frozen mix of the pepper and onion, and a can of tomatoes with chili peppers, but it turned out nicely. It's a really good use of ground turkey.

    • judy_l78dn2 on April 27, 2026

Be aware this is a slow cooker recipe! In my excitement to use the app in missed that. So…pivoted to using my IP’s bean/chili button. Perfect! Spicy and easy!

  • Tomato and white bean soup

    • cucinahalcon on November 20, 2018

A bit too acidic and the beans didn't cook according to the time in the recipe. I ended up blending it all with an immersion blender for a creamy tomato soup.

  • Cilantro-lime white rice

    • Zosia on October 30, 2018

A delicious accompaniment to a "Thai" pork dish. I used basmati rice and chicken stock as my liquid.

  • Garlic-ginger white rice

    • IowanCorn on February 03, 2025

The garlic and ginger were balanced perfectly in this recipe.

  • Brown rice with sesame oil

    • Zosia on September 18, 2018

This recipe's ratio of rice to liquid and cook time produced a perfectly cooked pot of rice. I used brown basmati rice, chicken stock in place of water and omitted the sesame oil.

  • Mashed cauliflower with garlic and cream cheese

    • pastaplease on March 11, 2021

      Will make again (and again).

  • Corn on the cob with gochujang butter

    • Melissa_427 on September 08, 2022

So, so good! I was worried it would be too spicy but it was simply perfect! I tend to only have unsalted butter on hand so a sprinkle of salt was an absolute necessity!

    • IowanCorn on August 11, 2025

The pressure cooker made the slightly older corn on the cob juicy and sweet, and the compound butter was a perfect note against the sweet of the corn.

  • Food in Jars

Happily, Daniel Shumski...has leaped into the void that the IP manufacturers left and has written a book that I believe will become the defacto user’s guide to this valuable little appliance.
