Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Pasta with double tomato sauce (Pasta con la salsa doppia)

    • Stephenn31 on July 18, 2023

An interesting mix of the hot and warm tomato sauces. The raw chopped tomatoes were like bruschetta on top!

  • Nonna Anna's meatballs (Polpette di Nonna Anna)

    • FieryItalian on August 26, 2020

Bit tasteless. Needs garlic and basil.

    • Stephenn31 on July 15, 2023

Delicious and great way to make the meatballs and sauce together

    • crotondo37 on March 03, 2026

Fantastic meatball recipe. These were so delicious.

  • Ice-cream cake (Spumone)

    • tges on March 26, 2020

A good enough recipe - but would garner a better result if making your own gelato. The cupeta was good and now gives me ideas on how to use it in other sweet dishes - but the soaked savoiardi biscuits just resulted in ice crystals in my spumone. Don't know how to get around this? Nonetheless, this affords me greater respect for Ben and Jerry's with their cake add-ins!

  • Chocolate and amaretti flan (Bonet)

    • PiaOC on June 07, 2021

      Sensational. Easy do ahead dessert.

  • Angela’s lasagne (Pasta al forno di Angela)

    • crotondo37 on March 03, 2026

I've made this recipe many times and it's always a hit. I made homemade pasta sheets once, and all the other times I used store bought and par boiled before assembling. It is a time consuming recipe, but that's what makes it fun and it's so worth it in the end! People always ask for this recipe after I make it for them!

  • Stuffed chicken roll (Rotolo di pollo)

    • Popisdead on March 31, 2021

Not hugely successful but i think that’s a lot down to me. My sausages and cheese were not strongly flavoured enough and i didn’t have any string. But was nice, just needed a bit more flavour, make sure you get Italian sausages is my advice.

Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognise as food. – Michael Pollan

Sometime in the 1950s, Emiko Davies' nonno-in-law began the tradition of ringing in the new year with tortellini al sugo. He served it along with spumante and a round of tombola, and sparked a trend; for over 20 years, you could find tortellini at midnight on New Year's Eve in the bars around Fucecchio. This is just one of the heirloom dishes in this collection, for which Emiko Davies has gathered some of her favorite family recipes. They trace generations that span the length of Italy, from the Mediterranean port city of Taranto in the southern heel of Puglia to elegant Turin, the city of aperitif and Italian cafe culture in the far north and, finally, back to Tuscany, which Emiko calls home. Tortellini at Midnight is a book rich with nostalgia, with fresh, comforting food and stunning photography. It is a book that is good for the soul.
