  • Butterscotch-potato chip balls

These were good - nice sweet and salty combo. Definitely on the sweet side but once in a while I enjoy something with butterscotch chips (usually magic layer bars). I used sea salt Kettle Brand Chips.

We enjoyed these a lot. Sweet and salty is one of my favorite combos. I did bake at 375 for 15 min and found it led to a nice light brown color.

  • Sour cream jumbles

These are delicious! Very soft and cakey. Vanilla comes through beautifully.

  • Peanut butter-marshmallow Kix trees

    • sarahkalsbeek on December 31, 2021

Yummy and cute and fun to make with my six-year-old! Kind of tricky to get a good tree shape. I used natural peanut butter because that's all I ever have in the house. The recipe explicitly states that you should not use natural peanut butter. But I always use natural peanut butter in baking, even when a recipe says not to, and never really have an issue. So these might not taste how they are supposed to, but we think they are tasty.

The book is illustrated with images of vintage baking booklet art and photography of many of the modern versions of the recipes. Headnotes briefly describe the origins of the recipe, the booklet from which it came, and how the author perfected its modern makeover.
