  • Spicy sweetcorn soup

      This was delicious, except that I misread the recipe and added all three tsp of chiptotle paste into the soup. I love spicy food, but this made the soup just too spicy even for my taste. Other than that, I loved the combination of sweet, smoky and spicy flavours and the bacon and coriander on top really elevated it to the next level.

      A very nice soup, and easy to make. I blended mine up rather than leaving it chunky. Would make again - could possibly combine with the spicy sweetcorn soup in the same book, they have a few ingredients in common and similar flavour profiles.

  • Harissa vegetables and jumbo couscous

      I quite liked this, but my partner didn't (he's not a fan of courgettes and peppers, though I hoped he'd like this recipe because of the spice and tomato elements). It was maybe missing something to elevate it to next level - some feta would have been really nice with it. I probably won't make again.

      The hot veg and couscous wilt the salad and make it very stodgy. Cool them first.

  • Bread tartlets

      These were interesting, and tasted really quite nice. The bread was a little bit fiddly to deal with, but gave a nice taste and texture to the tartlets. However I found it did catch and blacken quite a bit towards the end of cooking, yet I couldn't give them any shorter of a time in the oven because the filling needed to cook and set. So looks-wise these weren't the best, but taste wise they were nice. They came out of the tin easily.

  • Spicy sweetcorn fritters

      Not a fan of these. I think there was too much egg and flour for the amount of sweetcorn, and the taste was lacking. I didn't think the soy dip was a great pairing either. I have made sweetcorn fritters from a different recipe before, which used much less egg and flour, incorporated feta cheese, and served with an avocado and tomato salsa, and I vastly preferred that recipe to this one.

  • Ham and pea fritters

      Very quick and easy to put together, with all ingredients being things you are likely to have hanging around. I added an extra tablespoon of flour because I wasn't convinced they would hold together in the pan, but I'm not sure it really needed it. The yoghurt-mustard dip really lifted the basic fritters.

  • White bean and tuna fishcakes

      These were nice enough, but a) I'd make them smaller than the ones shown in the book as they had falling-apart issues, and b) the whole, with the sauce, was a little bit salty - maybe I over-seasoned?

  • Lamb steaks with mint and broad beans

      We really loved the marinade and seasoning on the lamb, and I'd repeat this element. The broad beans were nice but not amazing - mine seemed to have a lot more sauce/liquid than those pictured in the book.
