Notes about this book

  • tmatthey on September 13, 2021

Modern Macaroni Salad - good recipe. Subbed in full fat Greek yoghurt and dill paste rather than run to store. Decrease salt by maybe 30% next time then taste sauce before mixing in with pasta and veggies. Can be made ahead (but notes advise that you save 30% of sauce as a set aside. May want to think set aside sauce next day)

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Simple, tasty freezer breakfast sandwiches master recipe

    • crandall57 on June 30, 2024

These were easy to make and delicious. I used unflavored almond milk in place of the nonfat milk and sheep's milk yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt. I made the Denver-Style breakfast sandwich. I froze the egg and muffin separately and reheated the egg in the microwave and toasted the muffin, then assembled with the bacon and cheese.

  • Cheesy Southwest breakfast casserole

    • beth_cmm6dj on March 07, 2026

Made this once - a bit of a spin on regular casseroles but haven’t made a second run

  • Lemon blueberry crunch overnight oats

    • Bessp on June 04, 2024

Great meal prep breakfast. I leave out the cinnamon because I don't like it. You can use any fruit you like in this. I will usually also toss in a couple tablespoons of ground flax and hulled hemp seeds because I have a bag of each I'm trying to get rid of.

  • Every day apple-cinnamon pancakes

    • southerncooker on December 08, 2021

Hubby and I both loved this one. I used Honeycrisp apples. I made the next level Warm Cinnamon Sautéed Apple Topping , also in book, so good. I also put the optional toasted pecans and some maple syrup on mine and hubby just maple syrup.

    • Xyz123 on February 20, 2022

I make these often and they’re my husbands favorite. I haven’t made the apple topping that goes with it yet.

    • beth_cmm6dj on March 07, 2026

All around go to at my house - I’ve even skipped the apple when I didn’t have one - still good. Wrap the extra for toaster heating - sometimes add blueberries. Top notch

  • Warm antipasti dip

    • Running_with_Wools on August 10, 2025

Absolute flavor bomb. Fun to eat with all the surprises inside. I’ll definitely make this again. Salty, savory, creamy, and crunchy with the toasted bread. Great with wine, beer, or cocktails.

  • Cocoa loco roasted nuts

    • Xyz123 on February 20, 2022

      Made these with almonds. Yum!

  • Cowboy caviar

    • shylastrath on January 02, 2024

Book recipe is missing 2 ingredients from online: juice of 1 lime, 1/4 c. chopped cilantro. I chopped the tomatoes up smaller, added extra garlic and jalapeños, and used Trader Joe’s frozen roasted corn.

    • KCKB on June 05, 2025

This was tasty! Less sweet than other cowboy caviar recipes I’ve made. I used dried beans (soaked and pressure cooked), added the lime and cilantro that shylastrath mentioned, and also added some ground cumin and chili powder.

    • mna001 on October 09, 2025

Really tasty and remember to add the lime and cilantro. Made several times.

    • Anjackson1003 on January 26, 2026

We love this and add in lime juice and some extra seasoning like TJs elote.

  • Taco stuffed mini peppers

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

I made a whole recipe of the meat, but only stuffed half the amount of peppers. I used the other half of the meat for tacos. Hubby and I loved the peppers. Son said he liked the meat in tacos. He doesn't like sweet peppers. I omitted the cilantro since hubby doesn't like it.

  • Sticky Asian cauliflower wings

    • Xyz123 on February 20, 2022

I’ve made these several times and they are packed with lots of flavor. Love them!

    • cookingbychapter on January 02, 2026

Good. Great texture, I just think they were a bit too spicy for us and I might not use whole wheat flour next time.

  • Sweet potato pizza bites

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

I used precooked chicken bacon for the bacon. I made a half recipe and made half with store bought marinara and half with store bought pesto. I used fresh mozzarella. These were really good.

  • Zippy lemon yogurt dressing

    • KCKB on January 11, 2025

      Tasty!

    • Arishell on July 15, 2025

Enjoyed this but I think the yogurt is a touch overpowering.

  • Zesty ranch dressing

    • hbakke on June 15, 2023

Good dressing paired with the Sante Fe grilled chicken salad in this book. Besides the tang from the Greek yogurt, I thought this dressing was missing a little acidity.

  • Santa Fe grilled chicken salad

    • hbakke on June 13, 2023

Nice, flavorful summer salad. I used the Zesty ranch dressing recipe in the book and it turned out well. The chicken marinade lists a range of up to 8 hours, but I would do only a couple hours next time. I marinated for around 7 hours and the chicken had an odd chalky texture (probably from the lime juice). I would make this again.

  • Maple roasted butternut squash salad with arugula and farro

    • hbakke on December 17, 2021

Nice salad. The tangy sweet dressing paired well with all of the salad ingredients. I subbed feta for goat cheese. I would make this again, but maybe double the arugula since I like a salad with lots of greens.

    • bwhip on November 20, 2023

Very nice salad. Perfect for fall, with a lovely mix of flavors and textures.

  • Summer celebration orzo salad with chickpeas and creamy basil pesto

    • tamara_9khuic on February 22, 2026

Great make-ahead salad for meal prepping. I didn’t mix arugula into salad but placed on bottom to be stirred in when ready to eat.

  • Modern macaroni salad

  • Picnic slaw

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

This was delicious. I used some local honey and choula for the hot sauce.

  • Mexican kale salad

    • southerncooker on December 08, 2021

Daughter liked this one. I thought ok. Didn't wow me.

  • Harvest kale salad

    • southerncooker on December 08, 2021

This was delicious. Everything you want in a harvest salad. I used kale from my farm share.

  • Shaved Brussels sprouts salad

    • ellwell on April 29, 2022

The flavors in this salad worked really well together. The cranberries played off the tartness of the lemon yogurt dressing. I think it may be even better tomorrow after the dressing softens the sprouts and kale a little more.

    • KCKB on January 11, 2025

Flavorful and refreshing salad with a nice crunch.

    • Arishell on July 15, 2025

This salad is really good. Next time I’ll definitely add more cranberries and seeds.

  • Book club salad (a great, green party salad)

    • bwhip on September 06, 2023

Delicious salad, and super easy to prep. Ingredient combination sounded a little odd - peaches, avocado, gorgonzola, etc., but it sure wound up making a tasty result. We swapped in pine nuts for almonds, otherwise went with the recipe.

  • Thai peanut chicken stir-fry (the stir-fry that got me married)

    • LaurenB on March 03, 2026

Will make again and give it a weak 4/5. I hate modifying a recipe before trying at least once, but wanted to make the family happy so omitted the onion and sautéed the garlic and ginger at the end of cooking the vegetables (broccoli, carrots and peppers) instead of adding raw to the sauce. Worked out fine, but next time will add the onion and not sauté the ginger. Will also cut the red pepper flakes to only 1 tsp, 2 was way too much and we like spice. Lastly, if using broccoli, will pull before adding the sauce, it is so thick that it just overwhelmed the poor florets.

  • Kickin' black pepper pork stir-fry

    • ellwell on April 29, 2022

We were a little hesitant to add all the black pepper called for in the recipe, but it gave a nice kick to the dish without being overpowering. The whole family enjoyed it! I think the amount of noodles should be doubled, however.

  • Sheet pan tandoori chicken

    • hbakke on May 12, 2022

Nice, easy dinner. I didn't scrape the marinade off the chicken pieces and they were fine that way. My chicken thighs may have been on the larger size because they took an extra 10 minutes to fully cook to the recommended temperature. I would make this again.

  • Caprese chicken skillet

    • Bfamkitchen on July 12, 2024

A simple, flavorful summer dinner! I love the suggestion to serve the leftovers over arugula to make a salad. Will make again!

  • Instant Pot spring green farro risotto

    • bwhip on March 10, 2024

Flavor was good. Fairly easy to make, but definitely more hands-on time when most instant pot recipes. Not visually appealing in the least, sort of like drab green-brown porridge.

  • Italian turkey sausage skillet with farro, greens, and beans

    • eloise_tqh0g2 on April 06, 2026

Super yummy! Next time add chili flakes to give it a little kick

  • Spicy garlic shrimp and vegetables

    • tmatthey on February 18, 2022

This is a template recipe - simple way to cook big shrimp. Substitute seasonings, vegetables to your pantry's content

    • peaceoutdesign on July 24, 2024

      Nothing spectacular.

  • One pot creamy sun-dried tomato orzo with spinach

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

My almost 2 year old grandson loved this, daughter and I liked too.

    • christine_j6ex85 on March 08, 2026

My whole family loves this! Sometimes I substitute the tiny mozzarella balls for the Parmesan. If you’re reheating leftovers, add a little more broth or milk before reheating to bring back the creamy texture.

  • Raymonde's Moroccan lemon chicken

    • Nerples on February 18, 2023

Should have started the carrots before the onions because they weren't quite done, but this was really good. I wish it had made more sauce, because I could drink that stuff.

    • Beck001 on November 23, 2025

Really good dish that will repeat. Did not put olives in and turned out well. Carrots don’t fully cook - which we were ok with - but would probably add earlier. Lemon was strong so maybe would add less. (We had large lemons so maybe the issue) Would add more raisins. And maybe slightly more of every spice.

  • Asian noodle salad with spicy peanut dressing

    • JDeMarois on February 20, 2026

This comes together easily and I like that the dressing is all pantry staples. However, it makes a truly massive quantity of salad (too big for my largest bowl) and the noodles soak up a ton of dressing. I had to salt my serving, and I never add extra salt to my plate.

    • khughes on April 24, 2026

I made the dressing for a lettuce salad with carrots, radishes and cucumbers and it worked great. It makes a lot so I cut it inhale and still had enough for 4 people

  • Instant Pot pasta e fajioli

    • southerncooker on December 08, 2021

I used Half Baked Harvest's Spicy Italian Chicken Sausage recipe in this. Even though I used less of the spicy ingredients, it was still very spicy, so I added another can of diced tomatoes. It was good.

  • Asian lettuce wraps

    • southerncooker on December 08, 2021

This was so delicious. I only made a couple adjustments. I used vegetarian oyster sauce (no oysters involved) instead of hoisin sauce, added some cucumber as a topping, put some Mae Ploy and a sprinkle of Shichimi Togarashi on top. There's a note in the book to try leftovers scrambled with eggs and a small drizzle of sesame oil. I tried it and it was delicious too.

  • Salmon quinoa cakes with creamy Sriracha dipping sauce

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

This was a hit with family, even almost 2 year old grandson loved without the sauce. I used sour cream instead of yogurt since I was out of yogurt.

  • Instant Pot confetti rice and beans

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

This was delicious. I used some of the leftovers to make a breakfast burrito from the leftover love tips in the book, also delicious.

  • Any way you like it lemon yogurt pound cake

    • southerncooker on December 09, 2021

While this was good and both son and daughter loved it, I thought it would have been better had I used some of the suggested add ins.

  • Grammy's green chile chicken enchiladas

    • ellwell on May 09, 2022

Oh my goodness, these were delicious! That green sauce had such a wonderful depth of flavor. The yogurt/chicken filling complimented it perfectly. My husband made them for me on Mother’s Day—-it took him quite a while, so start early. Served with Spanish rice and cornbread. Yummy

  • Lemony sautéed summer squash and chickpeas

    • KCKB on June 26, 2024

Delicious! Warm, lemony, lightly salty, and the toasted almonds give it a nice textural contrast. It was also pretty quick and easy to put together.

  • Autumn sheet pan sausages with apples and harvest vegetables

    • KCKB on October 06, 2024

This recipe is easy to adapt for our partly-vegetarian household: just cook the sausages separately from the apples and veg (and add a couple of extra glugs of olive oil when adding the apples, to replace the fat from the sausage). I chopped up some seitan to round out the vegetarian servings. The garlic-mustard sauce is gloriously fragrant! I might just have to double the quantity of sauce next time we make this …

  • Slow cooker sweet potato peanut soup

    • KCKB on January 12, 2025

Rich and tasty - a nice level of spice.

  • Brown butter mashed sweet potatoes

    • KCKB on March 09, 2025

Tasty, but the brown butter flavor isn’t as strong as I expected.

    • Arishell on July 15, 2025

The potatoes were good but they didnt really have a brown butter flavor show up.

  • Everyone's invited apple crisp

    • sburton0409 on July 31, 2025

Yummy! Worth the time to peel the apples.

  • Kung pao vegetable stir-fry

    • Bessp on October 31, 2025

I doubled the sauce and added chicken, it turned out quite nice. I was expecting it to be spicier, next time I'll add more sambal oelek. I marinated the meat in the sauce for about 1/2 an hour before stir frying it in a wok. I served with rice. This was nice, quick, tasty meal.

  • Slow cooker golden coconut lentil soup

    • KCKB on November 10, 2025

This was warm and gently spicy on a chilly night. I mistakenly added the coconut milk at the beginning of cooking the soup in the slow cooker, rather than at the end as the instructions said, but it turned out fine. ETA: After a few days in the fridge, these leftovers were DELICIOUS!!!
