Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Shredded kale salad with grapefruit and seared salmon

    • averythingcooks on July 21, 2024

I am probably never making this salmon grapefruit salad BUT I thought the apple cider vinaigrette was delicious over garden romaine (this time beside a rich, cheesey egg dish). This "a little tart, a little sweet, a little punchy" dressing will be on repeat for sure.

  • California turkey salad with raspberry vinaigrette

    • mandycbeck on March 27, 2026

Dressing is great. Would be good with salmon instead of turkey.

  • Seared tuna with white bean and arugula salad

    • halfchefc on June 02, 2025

Made this for a quick lunch with canned tuna (the suggested modification). Halved the recipe and omitted capers. This was so easy and fresh! The vinaigrette is zesty enough to keep this interesting. I added in bell peppers and could easily use whatever veggie you have in the fridge. Substitutes I made: - spinach mix - red onion instead of shallots - canned tuna in water

  • Curried chicken and kale salad with creamy harissa dressing

    • ljl1989 on March 23, 2025

We loved this so much that we made it again two weeks later! The sweetness of the apples and raisins is a really nice contrast to the spiciness of the chicken. This may be dependent on the brand of harissa but I found this to be pretty spicy - great for us but probably wouldn’t make for kids.

  • Thai-inspired steak salad

    • julesamomof2 on May 24, 2024

This was decent if a little uninspired. I believe there is a typo in the amount of coconut sugar. 1 tablespoon of sugar was way too much.

  • Fattoush salad with creamy feta dressing

    • averythingcooks on June 15, 2024

This dressing is delicious & the Aleppo spiced crispy pita "croutons" provided great crunch. I used romaine, red onions, sweet peppers, celery, grape tomatoes & grated carrot + parsley & dill for the herbs and added chopped hard boiled egg. She suggests adding Beef Shawarma if desired (recipe elsewhere in the book & I will try that idea) but this time I oven roasted then shredded a small chicken breast seasoned with za'atar to serve over top. This was an awesome dinner salad.

  • Warm farro steak salad

    • averythingcooks on April 06, 2025

This was the inspiration to feed 2 of us with a small steak. For the dressing, I used a dried herb blend that includes thyme + lots of other things & after a quick taste, I also added some honey. My farro took longer to cook, I replaced the arugula with stir fried red onion & sweet peppers and I topped the bowl with some pickled matchstick carrots. Steak & blue cheese is a favourite combo for us and we really enjoyed this.

  • Creamy Italian chopped salad

    • averythingcooks on July 20, 2024

This was another super tasty dinner salad from this author. It was perfect for a busy day...I made the dressing early (it's very good!) & then raided the fridge/garden (no protein to cook!) for the rest. I used a mix of a milder salami + a hotter chorizo, hot pickled peppers, cubed mozzarella and a big variety of chopped veggies with the romaine. A definite repeat.

    • estanzler on August 16, 2024

Family was a big fan of this, even though they claim to not like creamy dressings. I made the mayo from scratch using the recipe in the book, which makes 1 cup, and didn't realize that the recipe called for 1/4 cup. I altered it to make it work, but wished I could have tried it as intended.

  • Cajun Cobb salad with shrimp

    • halfchefc on May 05, 2026

Yum! This was great and super easy. The ranch was a little too acidic so I'll probably just do either the lemon juice or the red wine vinegar instead of both next time.

    • averythingcooks on May 19, 2026

I used my own Cajun blend which has a pretty good punch of heat. With hard boiled egg & bacon + chicken replacing the shrimp, this a great main dish salad but as I thought we might miss some cheese, I opted for cubes of an aged white cheddar. Our house favourite Cobb is still made with a honey/mustard ranch + blue cheese but we also really enjoyed this tasty twist.

  • Macho salad

    • averythingcooks on April 18, 2025

This made a tasty & filling dinner salad. We loved the croutons (which got a shower of pecorino romano cheese before hitting the oven) & the dressing. I used left over roast chicken + green leaf lettuce and I also added sliced hard boiled eggs. We skipped the dates & avocado and added pickled matchstick carrots, sliced sweet red pepper & celery. We debated on the smoked almonds (which I do have) but thought the big crispy croutons would provide enough crunch. Such a good dinner salad but I would likely choose feta over the goat cheese next time.

    • LittleVikings on March 09, 2026

Nice dressing. Salad is a little fiddly. I didn't use the dates or chives. I think feta would be better in place of the goat cheese. I pickled the shallot, but I wouldn't necessarily do that again. I added red bell peppers for a second version.

  • The best chicken tortilla soup

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

This was really good and had a great texture. I was worried it would be too spicy but after the tortilla chips were mixed it, it was perfect. I added the lime zest in at the end with the lime juice.

  • Easy Italian wedding soup

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

My husband loved this soup. The meatballs were great by themselves but even better in the soup. It did take a little longer than some of the other soups in this book to make.

  • Simple black bean soup

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

This was a perfect black bean soup. Perfect texture and lots of flavor.

  • Green chile chicken and rice soup

    • averythingcooks on July 29, 2024

This a very nice soup but beware....depending on your green enchilada sauce (I used a tomatillo simmer sauce from my canning cupboard which I knew was quite tart), you may want to be prepared to counter that (I used some cream & a little honey to good effect). This also meant I did not feel the need to add the lime juice. I had a cooked chicken breast to use up (so changed the cook order a bit) & used Thai basil in place of cilantro. My roughly 1/3 recipe will not last long.

    • halfchefc on April 29, 2025

This is a repeat in my house, I make it as is and will sometimes mix in a little Greek yogurt in my serving. It's delicious and simple

  • Loaded potato leek soup

    • ljl1989 on March 23, 2025

Exceptional! My mother used to make potato leek soup every winter and I’ve been searching for a recipe that lives up to my memories of hers - this definitely checks the box. I subbed heavy cream for the coconut milk since we already had some. The cheese and bacon are a nice touch but if you’re looking for something lighter, it doesn’t even need them - the soup is great on its own.

  • Tomato-basil tortellini and sausage soup

    • averythingcooks on July 24, 2024

This is a delicous, hearty bowl that I made using spinach & gnocchi (in place of kale & tortellini). A mix of hot & mild sausage, fresh basil & a delux Italian seasoning (full of great extras like aleppo, fennel & dried roasted garlic) gives lots of great flavour and if you do eat dairy, a parm rind in the simmer is a good add-in. I always start with less broth (and did not use it all) and had intended to add the creamy ingredient (either the coconut milk as called for or more likely, a splash of 5% cream) but I completely forgot & we did not miss it at all. A repeat idea for sure.

    • lisa_h9ogxf on April 26, 2026

Excellent. I subbed chicken broth and half and half. Omitted salt and salted to taste at the end.

  • Slow cooker or pressure cooker spiced beef stew

    • averythingcooks on September 05, 2024

I made this in the slow cooker, adding celery + sweet peppers for more veg . I skipped the potatoes this time as we ate this over egg noodles with a spoonful of a spicy tomato chutney for garnish and we both really enjoyed it.

    • kiki_4i30mx on March 31, 2026

This is by far my favorite beef stew recipe. I come back to it time and time again! Its flavorful, has a great silky mouth feel with the broth, and fresh tasting all at once because of the herbs. We cook it in the instant pot and serve it with corn bread. Give yourself extra time to cook if your using the instant pot as it does take awhile. But definitely try this recipe if you havent yet!

  • One-pot butternut squash and sausage pasta

    • hallie_pcjy9a on February 12, 2026

This is such a hit in my house with adults and kids alike. Creamy without cream! Highly recommend

    • LittleVikings on March 10, 2026

Fast, easy and delicious! Great weeknight option. It skews just a tad sweet.

  • Creamy goat cheese pasta with spinach and artichokes

    • stephanie_frj4st on March 11, 2026

Didn’t enjoy this just too strong on the goat cheese I think for my taste. Felt very one note.

  • One-pot green curry veggie noodles

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

We really liked this one. Next time I would add more veg, especially the bok choy. I also added a little bit of soy sauce in the sauce.

    • eleanor_j91eer on April 30, 2026

Good & easy - cozy but bright and veggie heavy

  • Creamy Dijon penne with kielbasa

    • averythingcooks on August 20, 2024

We really enjoyed this quick pasta which was a perfect showcase for a lovely artisanal mustard made in Lethbridge with Alberta grown mustard seeds (Luco Farms for interested Canadians). I blistered little tomatoes with the kielbasa, used spinach & basil for the greens & added parmesan cheese. I appreciate that her recipes do not ask for huge amounts of pasta to feed a few...I typically have to scale it way back, but here it's 4 oz of dry pasta for 2 servings - yes! We are not keto or whole30 etc but we love Alex Snodgrass cookbooks!

    • ChefMella on August 17, 2025

Really great nontraditional pasta recipe. I was skeptical making a pasta with mustard, but it was delicious. I didn't have fresh tarragon so substituted dry, which was still very tasty although I'd prefer fresh. Super simple to make, a fast dinner to put together, and we had leftovers (cooking for 2 people).

  • Beef and broccoli lo mein

  • One-pan coconut-lime chicken and rice

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

I was disappointed with this one. I only used one chili and I thought that was too much spice. I also thought the sauce was a little too thick for the dish so that my rice didn't get crispy.

    • ljl1989 on June 11, 2025

We absolutely adored this - the rice was super flavorful. Adjust spice to your tastes - we actually added an extra chili and thought it was a good level of heat (no kids though).

    • Slatert on July 31, 2025

This meal is so good! It’s easy to swap out ingredients if you don’t have something. I’ve made it several different ways. I would recommend adding chilis. It’s not very spicy.

    • sarah_gimaun on January 28, 2026

This was sooooo delicious! I will be making it often. The rice was rich like a risotto but much less work.

    • kiki_4i30mx on April 05, 2026

This is very good! Im a sucker for crispy chicken thighs and the rice is delicious and creamy with a slight kick from the peppers

    • lisa_h9ogxf on April 26, 2026

This was good but my rice was dry. I’m afraid I didn’t get the ratios right and may have needed more chicken broth. I will try it again though because Alex’s recipes are always bangers!

  • Crispy Buffalo chicken lettuce wraps with blue cheese sauce

    • ChefMella on August 17, 2025

We aren't blue cheese fans so we substituted freshly shredded cheddar instead. It was amazing! Mr Mella rated this a 9.5 out of 10 and he is a tough critic. Instead of frying in oil I sprayed the breaded tenders with avocado oil and used the air fry function in the oven. Less messy and still delicious. We will be making this one again.

    • halfchefc on February 26, 2026

I used the air fryer for this but left everything else the same. Simple recipe, nothing new but it was an easy weeknight meal

    • stephanie_frj4st on March 11, 2026

These were surprisingly simple and really hit the spot.

    • averythingcooks on May 04, 2026

We used tortillas lined with romaine for these wraps. For us, the blue cheese sauce was a little too lemony but a spoonful of honey was a quick fix. For the herbs, I used a generous amt of a freezer blend of fresh parsley, chives & dill in the sauce. A mix of quick pickled veg (matchsticked carrots, celery & radishes) was a great addition to the wraps & we thought this simple idea was seriously good :)

  • Sour cream chicken enchiladas

    • averythingcooks on June 28, 2024

I roasted 1 large chicken breast for 2 cups of shredded meat & then got up to the 4 cup mark with black beans, corn, diced hot peppers & some cheese all of which generously filled 6 tortillas (4 corn & 2 slightly larger flour). I made the full amount of sauce which was really too much (but it IS good). Next time I would likely scale the sauce to 2/3's. This was tasty, filling & a great way to clean out the fridge/freezer/pantry.

    • julesamomof2 on January 14, 2025

Super easy to put together, especially with meal-prepped chicken. I poached a whole chicken the day prior and used some of the chicken to make this dish. I used corn tortillas and they were a little mushy. I suspect 20 minutes in the oven per the recipe was the issue. I could have use more sauce as well. With some tweaks this could be a keeper.

    • cookedfromabook on January 03, 2026

Very tasty recipe that comes together quickly. I subbed whole grain tortillas because it’s what I had and they worked wonderfully well.

    • lisa_h9ogxf on April 26, 2026

Absolute fav and I’ve made it multiple times. I like it with pepper jack cheese and always up the ingredients slightly so I have 2-4 extra enchiladas. Also I just Pam the casserole dish rather than butter it.

  • Skillet BBQ chicken quinoa bake

    • julesamomof2 on May 27, 2024

This was an all around hit with the family. Easy, one skillet dinner with little clean up. I sought out sugar free BBQ sauce specifically for this recipe and did not miss the sweetness of regular BBQ sauce.

    • sarah_gimaun on January 23, 2026

Easy and delicious one pan meal made out of ingredients I usually have in my fridge/freezer. I have never made an Alex Snodgrass recipe I didn’t love and make again.

  • Chipotle turkey-stuffed poblano peppers

    • averythingcooks on August 19, 2024

This was a tasty dinner but I did improvise based on my kitchen. My garden poblanos clearly aren't "medium" because 1/2 the filling (ie 12 oz of meat) would be far too much to stuff 2 peppers. I actually used 8 oz of meat (grd beef + hot & mild Italian sausage) topped up with corn + black beans. I used the seasonings listed but replaced the canned items (chiles & tomatoes) with a mild/hot mix of pickled peppers & homemade salsa. I opened/flattened 3 peppers, softening, layering cheese/filling & baking as instructed. This was a great use for garden/canning stuff, there is leftover filling for 1 lunch & this is definitely a repeatable idea.

    • halfchefc on April 29, 2025

I use ground turkey and add in whatever veggies need to be used up in the fridge. Reminder to myself: buy an extra poblano in case there's leftover filling again. Yummy!

    • Misa925 on August 08, 2025

I'm not a fan of ground turkey, but often buy it when it's on clearance for a crazy-low price & Husband always likes those dishes more than I do. I had all the ingredients for this recipe on hand, except only had 1 lb of ground turkey (instead of 1.5 lb) so I added 1 can of drained/rinsed black beans to make up for it. My only other change to the recipe was instead of stuffing whole peppers I sliced them in half vertically & removed seeds before the first baking & it was the perfect amount of filling for 8 heaped-up half peppers. IMO the beans were a great addition, it added texture to the turkey so I actually liked this dish! Served it with Knorr Mi Arroz Red Rice, cooked per pkg directions & added approx 8 oz frozen corn 5 min before the end of cooking. That was the perfect side dish for a great meal... I finally found a keeper ground turkey recipe! (Though next time I'll probably use cheddar for a sharper flavor.)

  • Sheet pan hot honey Dijon chicken

    • bwhip on December 19, 2025

Very tasty, very easy! Our store didn't have Fresno chiles, so I used jalapenos instead. Turned out great, and I'm sure we'll have this one again.

    • casey_mu301h on March 10, 2026

Subbed mini peppers for chiles and added red pepper flakes based on what we had on hand and it turned out great.

    • william_twih48 on May 14, 2026

This was actually much better than I expected but also took significantly more time than expected. I did triple the recipe so might have overcrowded the sheet pan leading to longer cook time, but ultimately it was a great dish.

  • Slow cooker or pressure cooker beer-braised chicken tacos

    • halfchefc on April 29, 2025

So I kinda cheated here since I made this on the stovetop. I halved the ingredients and simmered for a little over an hour. It worked out great, I just needed to add a little extra water (maybe 1/4 cup). Flavors were good but it needed extra salt at the end. I also left the chipotle peppers whole since they would be cooked down anyways (didn't want to dirty a cutting board for it)

  • Cashew chicken stir-fry

    • halfchefc on March 19, 2025

This is a repeat for us. I sub peanut butter for cashew butter for + I add in red bell peppers for extra veggies. Hits the spot!

  • Chicken piccata meatballs

    • LittleVikings on March 09, 2026

Less red pepper flakes for the kiddos. Served some meatballs without the sauce + noodles. I used 1 lb meat and same amount of spices. Accidentally added 2 tbsp EVOO to meatballs and it was fine. Good texture on meatballs. I served over spinach and linguine. Next time I would wilt the spinach in the pasta water or just in the sauce with pasta.

    • lisa_h9ogxf on April 26, 2026

Another family favorite! I double the meatballs and freeze half. I use reg flour. Not a weeknight endeavor!

  • Greek-inspired chicken and orzo bake

    • estanzler on August 20, 2024

We loved this and even the toddler ate some. It was a perfect ratio of veg, meat, and orzo. Great weeknight meal with minimal prep.

    • stephanie_frj4st on March 11, 2026

I used the large orzo and didn’t like it as much. Flavor was good, will try again.

    • wcannon2_q2hqh4 on May 03, 2026

Too liquidy - add additional dry orzo to offset.

  • Ginger and peanut butter ground turkey stir-fry

    • sophia_csi5ki on February 04, 2026

Easy and tasty. Will make again. We ate it with radishes and kimchi and it was delicious. We also needed to use a leek, so we substituted the shallots with that.

    • LittleVikings on March 09, 2026

Really great weeknight meal! Left out the Sriracha for the kids. Increase the amount of ginger next time. I used soy sauce instead of coconut amino. Served with rice, cilantro, mini cucumber rounds, sliced red pepper, crushed peanuts and lime wedges. Could serve over cauliflower rice or shredded cabbage for summer. Could add shredded carrot for extra veggies.

  • Italian skirt steak with bursting tomatoes

    • averythingcooks on July 04, 2024

This was a good use for an 8 oz piece of flank steak, some garden basil & the last of some grape tomatoes. It came together quickly & we enjoyed it but I think it needed something ...else (maybe balsamic drizzled over)? We spooned this over a base of parmesan smashed potatoes and this idea will be repeated.

    • tawny_zxhi4m on May 21, 2026

This is semi regular rotation. I’ll cook up ribeye or NY strip then add the burst tomatoes to top it off. This time I don’t have parsley or basil, so went a little off script. Placed a spoonful of the tomato mix on either side of the dinner plate. One side added mozzerella and basil pesto with a crostini as a caprese steak bite crostini. The other side of the plate, added crumbled blue cheese and crostini for a tomato blue cheese steak bite crostini. Both very good!

  • Slow cooker or pressure cooker gochujang shredded beef bowls

    • LittleVikings on March 09, 2026

This was excellent! I reserved some of the shredded meat for the kids before putting the extra sauce on. I served it with rice, kitchen, avocado, shredded carrot, Mini cucumber rounds and sliced red pepper.

  • Sheet pan sausage and sweet piquanté peppers

    • averythingcooks on September 12, 2024

I used a mix of pestos from my freezer for the sauce (regular basil, lemon basil & one called "herbdacious" which meant adding extra lemon slowly to taste) and replaced the cauliflower with broccoli. I gave the sausages a 10 minute head start & this time we skipped the walnuts. The peppadews (or "piquante" peppers as she calls them) were a great addition, we liked the use of goat cheese and we enjoyed this simple sheet pan dinner.

  • Simple skillet beef shawarma

    • casey_mu301h on March 10, 2026

The sauce didn’t work for us but otherwise good.

  • Za'atar-crusted lamb chops with roasted carrots and herb drizzle

    • estanzler on February 18, 2025

This was very good. I made no changes to the recipe, but I would probably cook the carrots a bit longer.

  • Philly cheesesteak-stuffed mushrooms

    • kiki_4i30mx on March 20, 2026

This is soooo good! We have also chopped it up and put it on nachos. The flavors are out of this world good!

  • Chili oil pork and cabbage stir-fry

    • julesamomof2 on June 11, 2024

Really tasty dish. I happened to have Sichuan peppercorns on hand and those cannot be skipped as the chili oil is so flavorful and key to the final product. Like many of these dishes I find I need to pair it with something else to make a full meal so ended up making this alongside the bang bang shrimp lettuce wraps and had some leftovers to spare.

  • Crunchy baked beef tacos

    • ChefMella on August 17, 2025

These were so good! We had plenty of leftovers so we reheated the tacos in the oven. Served with home fries and seasoned black beans. This was an easy recipe and so yummy.

    • hkasdan on May 19, 2026

      Nothing special

    • holly_6rdxil on May 21, 2026

I used low carb tortillas and they ended up being really dry so I recommend not doing that! The beef was good, but nothing special.

  • Sheet pan mini bbq-cheddar meatloaves with sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts

    • ChefMella on August 17, 2025

Next time I would shorten the initial vegetable cook time and extend the meatloaf cook time in order to make the meatloaves medium well to well done. Other than that, everything was so good. It came together quickly and since everything was on one sheet pan not much mess to clean up after.

  • Easy ground lamb curry

    • estanzler on July 10, 2024

This was really good and flavorful and came together pretty quickly. It was a bit soupier than the picture looked and I think my family would have liked it with a little more meat. I put in a little extra coconut milk to make it a little more mild for the baby.

    • AndieEats on April 15, 2026

This was easy to throw together, but the flavours were a bit mild for us using ingredients as written. It is reminiscent of a soupy aloo keema. Partner said he'd rather just make a traditional keema since it's not much more work.

  • Sichuan-inspired beef stir-fry

    • estanzler on April 28, 2024

Used zucchini instead of celery and added shiitakes. This was pretty good.

  • Bang bang shrimp lettuce wraps

    • julesamomof2 on June 11, 2024

We liked these lettuce wraps but they were a fair bit of work for an app. The book doesn't divide dishes into courses, but I assumed these would not be a full meal and I was right. That said, they were a fairly good replica of the Bonefish Grill original.

  • Tom yum-inspired shrimp stir-fry

    • krista_fcgy12 on January 27, 2026

Really beautiful flavors- just not my favorite recipe I would run back to.

  • Baked salmon sushi bowls with spicy mayo

    • eloise_tqh0g2 on February 26, 2026

My local grocery store was out of stock of coconut aminos so I substitute it with soy sauce. Came out very delicious!

  • Mediterranean salmon burgers with cucumber-feta salad

    • mandycbeck on March 06, 2026

This was pretty good, but not outstanding. We ate the salmon burgers on buns with chili mayo, and had the salad on the side. I omitted cucumbers and added tomatoes, the salad was really refreshing.

  • Portobello tacos with serrano avocado crema

    • casey_mu301h on March 10, 2026

The Serrano avocado crema was amazing but the tacos themselves were just okay.

  • Red pepper miso buddha bowls

    • stephanie_frj4st on March 11, 2026

My cucumber went bad so did it without that and this was such a delicious meatless meal. Will definitely make it again and excited to try with the cucumber!

  • Tikka masala-inspired lentils

    • halfchefc on March 12, 2026

Solid veggie dinner. I halved the recipe and it was still a lot of food for 2 people.

  • Strawberry oatmeal bars

    • lisa_h9ogxf on April 26, 2026

Amazing! Would make a great dessert served warm with some Bluebell Homemade Vanilla!
