I love this book. There are so many good recipes that I have made again and again.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Minced meat plate pie

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

made this a deep pan pie. drained the surplus juice to add to home made gravy to accompany (in butter, softened red onion, herbs - maybe rosemary. could add diced mushrooms. beef stock, splash Worcestershire sauce, seasoning, thickened with cornflour).

    • joneshayley on January 24, 2018

Very basic, but a good pie, and a starting point to branch from. I add herbs (rosemary/thyme) , veg (grated carrots) and a dash of wine. A tablespoon flour before the stock to thicken the gravy- I fear it may be thin without. Perfect pastry.

  • Cheese pie

    • joneshayley on February 05, 2017

Proper mystery dinner. A million calories though

  • Crumpets

    • Carol.Furness on July 19, 2014

Lush. Not like any crumpets you will ever buy. Worth making.

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

Delicious recipe; flavour improves when reheated. I finish tops under the grill so as not to squash the holes that appear!

  • Lemon drizzle cake

    • Carol.Furness on July 19, 2014

I've made this loads of times. Its quick to make and delicious.

    • joneshayley on February 05, 2017

      Great go to drizzle recipe

  • Millionaire's shortbread

    • joneshayley on September 16, 2018

Brilliant recipe, I found this very easy to make and very delicious. The biscuits last well too.

  • Foolproof mayonnaise

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

worked better than lots of other recipes I've tried!! Flavour needs little improving, but that's easy to do - depending on what its being used for...

  • Dave's mam's killer fishcakes with cheddar cheese sauce

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

Very tasty and satisfying! I make eight (rather than six) as I don't want them so big. Needs just green veg to accompany!

  • Spicy roasted chicken with minty sauce

    • Carol.Furness on July 19, 2014

Love this. Low in calories too, so ideal for the weight watchers amongst us. Good hot or cold

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

Delicious! As I joint the chicken myself (more economical - plus I'm left with breasts and wings for other uses...) - I use here the chicken leg and thigh - so have two servings. I put all spices etc. in chopper, including TURMERIC - and just blitz. I serve with a spiced pilau rice (brown rice) or a pilaf rice (brown rice). For the minty yoghurt sauce, I use fresh mint from the garden, and add ground cumin and chilli - for extra taste!

  • Curried salmon

    • Carol.Furness on July 19, 2014

Surprisingly good. Wasn't sure I'd fancy this but it was delicious.

  • Pan haggerty

    • joneshayley on February 05, 2017

      Great recipe- authentic tasty dinner

  • Spaghetti alla carbonara

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

As I love veg (!), I also added large spring onion, garlic, broccoli, cherry toms and peas, and less butter. I found the sauce a little runny - but that could have been the addition of veggies. But, my hub enjoyed!!

    • joneshayley on February 05, 2017

Brilliant carbonara- so much better than the usual inauthentic cream heavy options

  • Cottage pie with cheesy mash

    • adewar on November 24, 2015

A really good flavourful recipe for cottage pie - totally worth the extra effort. I usually make it without the cheese in the mash as this seems like overkill.

  • Bastichio

    • joneshayley on February 05, 2017

Very nice- very rich though and serves at least 8. Better next day

  • Welsh griddle cakes

    • joneshayley on March 04, 2020

These are beautiful, lightly spiced and well textured. My go-to for dydd dewi sant.

  • Horseradish sauce

    • clairepotter on November 17, 2019

Fantastic. Doubled quantity and used soya cream to keep it dairy-free. Still had two thirds of horseradish root left for other recipes. Used fine side of box grater.

  • Apple & blackberry crumble

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

The most gorgeous crumble ever!!!!!!! I used frozen mixed berries - defrosted overnight.

  • Texas cornbread

    • Carol.Furness on July 19, 2014

Made this a couple of times. Very tasty and a meal in one, just add some salad or veg.

  • Perfect cauliflower cheese

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

Quite nice, my hub enjoyed. As I wanted it 'saucy', I increased by 2x - butter, plain flour, whole milk, with 2 tsps. mustard powder. Also added tomatoes under the breadcrumbs.

    • Beth891 on December 15, 2024

I skipped the mushrooms and used cheddar and added less cheese than it said and it was still delicious! One to make again!

  • Rum babas

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

made these several years ago for my hub's birthday. seem to remember they were tasty - but there were too many! Will have to make again sometime to refresh my memory!

  • Spotted dick

    • Spikeal on April 18, 2021

The only true Spotted Dick, but should be sliced like bread and coated with butter and fine brown sugar.

  • Sweet & sour pork Hong Kong style

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

Delicious recipe - but the sweet and sour sauce needs - chunks onions, carrots and green peppers - all cooked but still retaining their crunch!

  • Chana chaat

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on March 13, 2015

fresh mint can also be add. Great to have with the spicy roast chicken, p 87.

  • Scotch eggs

    • joneshayley on January 26, 2018

      Beautiful recipe- wonderful picnic food

  • Yummy biscuits

    • joneshayley on September 17, 2018

Leave plenty of room between the biscuits as they spread a lot. Brilliant reliable recipe

  • Treacle tart

    • dawnelizabethtaylor on May 25, 2026

Made using Bakingwithgranny.com for monthly baking challenge. As it lacks ‘nutrition’(!) probably won’t make again.
