Notes about this book

  • spicebite on August 15, 2012

Gorgeous dish, and great way to make use of end of season fennel. I cooked the fennel for a bit longer than in the recipe

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Italian almond and carrot cake

    • Kate123 on January 23, 2012

Best carrot cake recipe ever. Note make sure egg whites are at room temperature and beater and bowl are super clean. I usually beat the egg whites first, set aside, then go ahead and beat egg yolks and sugar.

  • Baghdad eggs on simple flatbread

    • JFM on January 29, 2014

One of the best egg recipes I've had! So fresh and light and tasty! We had it with last night's leftover bubbly and fresh orange juice - not very authentic, but very nice!

  • Poached quince

    • Melanie on May 17, 2015

Lovely flavour, I can never get enough of quinces at this time of the year (I think the magic of their changing colour is quite apt for autumn). This is a very simple preparation that can either be eaten simply as poached fruit or used in other recipes. The leftover poaching syrup also makes for great cordial.

  • Roasted garlic

    • Melanie on March 30, 2014

The instructions make for perfect roast garlic.

  • Braised fennel gratin

    • spicebite on August 15, 2012

Gorgeous dish, and great way to make use of end of season fennel. I cooked the fennel for a bit longer than in the recipe

  • Pesto muffins

    • sailor on June 24, 2013

these are moist and delicious kids love them. Great way to get them to eat beetroot which I find they don't normally like.

  • Beetroot and chocolate muffins

    • sailor on June 24, 2013

These are moist and delicious and a great way to get kids to eat beetroot.

  • Loretta's Shrewsbury Easter biscuits

    • Jaybak on June 08, 2013

      Look in index under 'Oranges'

  • Janni Kyritsi's wild weed pie

    • pennyvr on August 16, 2015

Made this using silverbeet from the shops and only a handful of greens from my garden. It should be great made with slightly old greens from the garden, will try it when I have some.

  • Four ways with lightly steamed cauliflower and browned breadcrumbs

    • pennyvr on August 16, 2015

The caper & parmesan variation is delicious

  • Raspberry muffins

    • Curly73 on March 19, 2016

p555 20g butter 220 self raising flour 1/2 cup caster sugar 3/4 cup buttermilk 1 egg 3/4 cup vegetable oil 100g raspberries

  • Lamb shanks braised with celeriac

    • chezsandj on January 03, 2021

Great! Easy to do and tasty. The spice mix is a good addition (but don't wipe out the oil after searing the meat, or you lose the flavour. Lamb shanks aren't that fatty). Took 2hrs ish on the wood burning stove.

  • Warm saute of zucchini, pine nuts and currants

    • anniecc on August 03, 2022

Really loved this, although cooking the zucchini was a bit time-consuming. I decided to serve it with crumbled feta cheese which was a fantastic edition.

Publishers Text

If you have ever dreamed of picking fresh salad leaves for the evening meal, gathering vine-ripened tomatoes or pulling up your own sweet carrots, this is the book for you. Follow in the footsteps of a much loved cook and food writer as she reveals the secrets of rewarding kitchen gardening. Be encouraged by detailed gardening notes that explain how adults and children alike can plant, grow and harvest over 70 different vegetables, herbs and fruit, and try some of the 250 recipes that will transform your fresh produce into delicious meals. Families can learn together with this book, which is, in part, a result of Alexander's work in establishing kitchen gardens in primary schools. Her idea is that children who know how to grow and cook their own food will have an interest in healthy, fresh food for their entire lives. Whether you have a few pots on a balcony or a large plot in a suburban back garden you will find everything you need to get started in this inspiring and eminently useful garden-to-table guide.
