  • Kentucky Hot Browns

Super easy to make for weeknight dinner. On the table in 20-30 minutes.

  • Saltine cracker candy

    • hbakke on December 22, 2021

Easy way to make "toffee". These turned out great, but I may use a darker chocolate next time for contrast to the overall sweetness of the toffee mixture.

  • Mrs. Reagan's Vienna chocolate bars

    • hbakke on October 05, 2022

Very nice dessert bars. I didn't have the specified pan size, so I used a 9 x 13" pan and it worked well. The combination of meringue, pecans, raspberry preserves, chocolate, and shortbread-like crust was delicious. I would make these again.

Very tasty and not as involved as I feared given the different components. I reduced by a third as didn't have a tin large enough - only 12x8 inches. Still used two egg yolks but just three egg whites.

  • Peanut butter-chocolate chip cookies

    • coloresperanza on May 11, 2026

Used UK ingredients (I understand there are differences in flour and butter etc). Used golden granulated sugar and molasses sugar as that was all I had which was dark brown and moist. These turned out very tasty but quite claggy. They hardly spread at all in the oven which was a surprise, not sure if they were meant to which might indicate the texture was not as intended. I went for the chewy option of 9 minutes cooking time. Either way, these were simple to put together and liked by the kids so I'll be cooking them again. The batch was huge though! Had to freeze a lot of the dough.

  • Swedish almond cookies

    • hbakke on November 09, 2021

Nice enough cookies. Nothing spectacular, but simple to make and tasty.

Publishers Text

Southern food and food stories are bound together. This book will reflect people, regardless of where they come form, who claim Southern food as their own, whether for a lifetime or a mealtime. People feel deep affection for their local community cookbooks, especially those well-worn volumes that serve as a timestamp of a particular place and time. No other type of recipe collection is more generous, gracious, and welcoming. Before we give you a bite, we Southern cooks have to tell you about what we've made. Southern food is evocative, so our food and food stories are bound together in our communities. A memorable Southern cookbook holds good food and a good read, the equivalent of a brimming recipe box plus the scribbled notes and whispered secrets that cover the tips, advice, and stories that a generous cook shares with family members, friends, and neighbors. These recipes bring all sorts of cooks, recipes, and stories to a common table to bring readers a cookbook filled with good things to eat that have something to say.
