Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Cinnamon-coffee pecans

  • Baking powder biscuits

  • Blueberry streusel muffins

  • Banana-nut muffins

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

Not terrible but not the greatest either. I’m not the best muffin baker, though, so maybe it’s me.

    • SalsaSister on February 21, 2026

I made this into a loaf instead of muffins and Topped it with some salted caramel finishing sugar. And instead of pecans, I used walnuts

  • Buttermilk pancakes with homemade maple syrup

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

These pancakes are excellent! I used real maple syrup to top them rather than making the homemade syrup that accompanies the pancake recipe.

  • Buttery pan rolls

    • MarciK on December 01, 2025

These are delicious rolls. Only thing I’d do differently is make them larger. I followed the recipe for size and number of rolls per pan, and they were quite small.

  • Basic yellow cake

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

I over baked this, but I layered it in my trifle bowl with vanilla pudding, strawberries, and whipped cream, so it really didn’t matter that it was dry. Baked properly, it probably deserves a better rating.

  • Carrot sheet cake

    • ssdrabek on March 25, 2013

      This is CRAZY good!!!

  • Banana sheet cake

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

This is a very thin but fairly moist and flavorful cake. I used my favorite cream cheese frosting rather than the one given with the recipe, but the cake might be better with the sweeter frosting intended for it.

  • Strawberry shortcake

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

This is the ultimate strawberry shortcake. Occasionally I try another recipe for a change of pace, but I always come back to this one.

  • Light hummingbird cake

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

This is great for a light recipe. The recipe recommends Light Cream Cheese Frosting but I use my favorite frosting recipe instead: 18 oz. cream cheese, 6 Tablespoons butter, 2 1/4 cups powdered sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Frosts a three-layer cake.

  • Angel food cake

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

This is the quintessential angel food cake.

  • Vanilla buttercream

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

This is only okay. It’s only sweet and I think it lacks depth of flavor.

  • Monster cookies

    • ssdrabek on September 28, 2012

      These cookies are so WONDERFUL...

  • Cheese-vegetable quiche

    • GiselleMarie on May 07, 2022

I made this without a crust and we liked it very much. Who doesn’t like warm melty cheese? I used only 1/8 teaspoon of white pepper so it wouldn’t be overpowering. Next time I’ll use more broccoli and cauliflower, but this was very good as written.

  • Lemony baked salmon

    • ssdrabek on September 01, 2011

      Yummy and simple and delicious!

  • Italian pot roast

    • bakerschella on August 21, 2022

skim off fat before serving. slow cook on med.

  • Beef tips on rice

    • JSConrad on October 11, 2011

Serve this over egg noodles instead of rice - it's much better.

  • Teriyaki beef broil

    • AngelNewsi on May 14, 2020

This was okay. Lacking salt big time, but perhaps that was because I used a low-sodium soy sauce. I would not make again

  • Italian meat sauce

    • GiselleMarie on April 09, 2020

This is a nice thick sauce rich with meat. I used it to layer unbreaded eggplant slices with cheeses and it came out great. I also used it to top pasta as a side dish and that was wonderful too. I used only one teaspoon of sugar because we’re trying to cut back on it and there are enough other flavors going on that it was good anyway.

    • GiselleMarie on April 09, 2020

This is easy and delicious! I wanted to layer unbreaded baked eggplant slices with cheeses and a hearty sauce but I was unable to find a recipe that was simple enough for my mood last night, so I used this as the sauce and made my own recipe. This is nice and thick with meat. It makes a big panful, so I also used it to top pasta as a side dish at the same meal.

  • Creole pork chops

    • GiselleMarie on May 06, 2020

This is a very tasty dish, perfect for a weeknight dinner. The braising makes the chops extremely tender and flavorful.

  • Classic lasagna

    • ssdrabek on September 04, 2012

If you want a lasagna that stacks nice and neat and sticks to your ribs this is the one...I prefer and the kids prefer to have extra sauce....so I will make extra sauce next time....I like runny saucy lasagna...

  • Hoppin' John

    • cpandrew on December 30, 2022

The “red peppercorns” in the index should be “ground red pepper”, which is not the same thing. Ground red pepper is usually cayenne in US kitchens.

  • Grilled jalapeño chicken

    • erin_45716k on June 03, 2026

Huge hit with the family. Next time, I won’t take the seeds out of my jalepenos because we like things spicy.

  • Chicken breasts Lombardy

    • lana_aummgq on March 24, 2026

One of my favorite chicken and mushroom recipes. The sauce is delicious! Even if I cut the chicken in half I make the full sauce recipe.

  • Green bean salad with feta

    • GiselleMarie on October 05, 2020

I tried this because it’s easy, it calls for ingredients I always have on hand, and I had a colander full of string beans from my garden. This recipe is better than the sum of its parts. In fact, it’s absolutely delicious! The amount of dressing is generous and I didn’t use it all, even though I like a lot of dressing on salads. I omitted the walnuts at my husband’s request but I’m looking forward to including them next time.

  • Dilled cucumber salad

    • GiselleMarie on October 07, 2020

Almost every cookbook I own has some version of these cucumbers, so I thought it was time to try them and that a Southern Living recipe was a safe bet. These are kind of gloppy and tasteless. Blah! Fortunately, my husband thinks they’re fine, so he can finish the leftovers.

  • Tomato aspic

    • PinchOfSalt on July 22, 2013

A virgin Bloody Mary in gelled form!

  • Mandarin chicken salad

    • GiselleMarie on March 15, 2020

I liked this as a nice change of pace but my family protested that I make the best chicken salad in the world. Why would I try any other kind?!? I might make this again for friends who haven’t tried my regular chicken salad.

  • Cucumber sandwiches

    • GiselleMarie on August 30, 2021

I’ve enjoyed fancy, tasty cucumber sandwiches many times in tea shops, so I thought this would be a great way to use some of our garden’s bounty. Instead of stirring grated cucumber into the cream cheese mixture, I piled very thin slices of cucumber on bread on which I had spread the cream cheese mixture. I’m disappointed that this recipe has no pizzazz. It needs more garlic salt, more dill—more flavor! I won’t make this again.

  • Baked potato soup

    • ssdrabek on March 25, 2013

      amazingly good!

  • Roasted beets with warm Dijon vinaigrette

    • EasyBakeThis on August 17, 2024

Who knew you could eat the beet greens.
