Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Beef brisket soft tacos

    • IowanCorn on October 27, 2023

This was a tasty use of brisket. I used ground chipolata powder, and left off the cilantro - I used the leaves of the celery instead. The result was a flavorful warm, but not really spicy, meat that was easily shredded, If you're a person that likes your taco spicy, you might want to increase the amount of hot pepper either in the slow cooker or on the tacos.

  • Company pot roast

    • IowanCorn on July 12, 2025

This was tasty, and easy to make on a hot day, since you don't use the oven. Using the leftovers, especially the liquid, I added rice and 1/2 cup of red lentils, and made a extremely tasty soup. I think this was the best recipe from this cookbook so far.

  • 15 bean and tomato soup

    • IowanCorn on October 20, 2025

An extremely fragrant, tasty bean soup, and a perfect weekday supper since it's getting colder. I served it with a plain cornbread, which was a good match.

  • Open faced sloppy Toms

    • IowanCorn on April 26, 2026

Made a sweeter sloppy than I normally like, so I would reduce the brown sugar next time. I first thought that this had too much veg, especially since I used fresh pepper, onion, and celery instead of the frozen mix, but it cooked down into a nicely balanced sauce.

  • Chicken sausage and white bean stew

    • IowanCorn on May 10, 2026

I couldn't find the spinach and feta chicken sausages, so I subbed in chipotle Monterey jack cheese chicken sausage, which added a nice heat to the stew. It was a nice, easy stew, with a nice flavor. My husband had it over mac'n'cheese, and I can see adding a starch to the recipe to stretch it out some more.

  • Smoked paprika pork

    • IowanCorn on September 09, 2024

Tasty, but not spicy. The smokiness of the paprika comes through very nicely. We had this over mashed potatoes rather than rice by family request, and the gravy went well with them. Careful on the cooking time, because I was running late and it did dry out a bit.

  • Hungarian chicken with smoked paprika

    • IowanCorn on October 02, 2024

Edible but not the best. The vegetables looked sad after the cooking time, so I blended them up for a sauce, which taste reminded me of the taste of the sauce in a can of Spaghetti-o's.
