Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Hot & tingly smashed cucumber salad

    • hbakke on December 01, 2023

Simple cucumber side dish with a spicy, crispy topping. Will repeat.

    • Bumbledog on January 17, 2026

This one was easy and fine, but I think that probably speaks more to the quality of my seasoning skills and chili oil than the recipe. May or may not repeat.

    • matt_gn5je0 on March 07, 2026

Quick and easy delicious cucumber salad.

  • Greek-ish cucumber salad

    • rachel_ywqstg on March 16, 2026

Delicious and simple! I do wish that she had suggested quantities, but I know that the purpose of the recipe was a lesson in seasoning and the versatility of cucumbers. Instructions were simple and easy to follow.

  • Super-savory tomato salad with nori & sesame

    • AmomentOfMusic on August 22, 2025

Simple but a nice way to jazz up a side of tomatoes. I made extra of the nori and Sesame to sprinkle over rice later.

  • Waldorf salad with buttermilk honey-mustard dressing

    • Lepa on December 29, 2023

This was an excellent lunch: quick, crunchy, refreshing and delicious.

    • Emily Hope on January 17, 2024

We liked this salad a lot -- easy to put together, good mix of flavors. I don't love my current honey so subbed maple syrup and reduced amount a bit. Served with a brothy bowl of Christmas limas.

    • mduncan on March 22, 2024

      Easy, crisp sweet-and-savory salad.

    • jaelsne on June 20, 2024

I made this with the kefir option and it was very successful.

    • fprincess on March 31, 2025

I had all the ingredients on hand (minus grapes). I used roquefort for the blue cheese, and did my usual substitution of fennel for the celery (I am not especially fond of celery, but love fennel). I liked the dressing much better than any mayo-based dressing. It was very easy and delicious!

  • Citrus & saffron with bitter lettuces

    • KevinSeattle on December 18, 2023

This was delicious and pretty easy. BUT the saffron is lost in the mix. I would make it again, but save the saffron for paella. I used hazelnuts instead of pistachios (which would have popped in all the scarlet and orange colors).

    • katmagdunn on January 15, 2024

I didn't have bitter greens so I just used batavia lettuce, but this was really good -- I thought it would be too sweet at first (I like things sour) but it was really addictive and felt very california on a cold winter day. recommend!

  • Cannellini beany melt

    • katiescooking on June 05, 2024

Super easy to make for a light dinner that's full of flavor

  • Ranch dressing (aka the only dressing that matters)

    • mooo42 on February 09, 2026

      Perfect. Use the MSG

  • Watermelon chaat with lime, ginger & cashew clumps

    • AMcGrath on February 08, 2026

I loved this. Perfect summer dish.

  • Grated beet & crispy chickpeas with lemon, oregano & feta

    • mduncan on March 22, 2024

Great dish; everything I crave in a lettuce-less salad. I have half of it left in the fridge and can't wait to finish it. My personal preference is for more green onions than the recipe calls for, and I needed to add a teaspoon of olive oil to the pan with the garlic, but this will be my go-to recipe when I'm craving beets.

    • hbakke on April 01, 2024

Nice earthy flavors in this salad. We loved the crunch from the chickpeas and coriander seeds. The combination of the creamy feta and raw shredded beets was very nice with a sprinkle of dried oregano on top. I would make this again.

    • takemori on July 07, 2024

Delicious! Tossed in an extra finely sliced preserved lemon with the coriander seeds.

  • Bravas potato salad

    • mduncan on March 22, 2024

I've made this recipe twice -- first time I made exactly as written, and was surprised that I didn't like the potato chips on top of the finished dish. I omitted the chips the second time and squeezed Kewpie mayo on top before serving. I love the flavor of this salad but prefer it without the chips and with a little mayo.

  • Mayo & sardines on toast

    • tacoquokka on May 14, 2026

Very simple recipe but this combination of flavors just works. Subbed vegan mayo and shallots.

  • Honeynut & miso soup

    • meggan on November 14, 2023

Less a recipe than a collection of ingredients. Nonetheless, the combo of squash, apple, fresno chili and miso is winner.

  • Cauliflower & coconut soup

    • hbakke on January 08, 2024

With no ingredient amounts, this was more of an idea than a recipe. The resulting soup was good, but took a bit of seasoning and tasting back and forth to get there. The soup was a bright chartreuse color (not as evident in my photo) from the combination of ingredients and a nice contrast to the brown winter fare we've been eating lately.

  • Four fat jammy egg tacos

    • meggan on September 21, 2025

I used flour tortillas. Don’t overcook the nuts.

  • Deviled egg dip

    • Pandan on February 16, 2024

Sprinkled with chives instead of fish roe. I took a long time to press the egg yolk through the strainer, maybe mine was a bit too fine. Could have used a little bit less butter. It’s super rich, but definitely very tasty! Served it with Ritz crackers and cucumber slices.

    • mweinshel on February 08, 2026

I’ve used both a food mill (which I don’t recommend) as well as a rounded wire-mesh strainer to finely grate the yolk, and that is probably the most tedious part of the recipe to prepare, but it’s a hit whenever I make it!

    • samantha_p4p04u on April 05, 2026

Found the onion to be too strong, wish I would have used shallot instead. Also don’t love that you only use half of the egg whites, feels too wasteful

  • Chili-blistered egg over brothy beans with fish sauce & lime

    • ch_cmh on April 05, 2026

Canned butter beans. Quick easy dinner, will make again

  • Crispy shallots

    • Bumbledog on January 17, 2026

Easy and turned out great. I sliced by hand and it wasn't a problem

  • Poached eggs over labne with chili oil (Çılbır)

    • fprincess on December 19, 2024

This is a traditional Turkish dish called Çilbir and is great for brunch. This was so delicious that I made myself another plate as soon as this was finished. Everyone loves a poached egg, and the combination with the yoghurt made them even more delicious. The chili oil is hot of course but it is tamed by the yoghurt and you can taste its flavor without being overwhelmed by the heat. Lastly, the herbs and lemon zest make everything pop. It's wonderful!

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

So good and easy to make.

  • Quinoa crunch salad

    • mduncan on March 22, 2024

I really like this recipe and have made it a couple of times but, after the first time I made it, have always added halved cherry tomatoes or grapes for a little sweetness.

    • kfreytag on March 25, 2026

Delicious salad! Served with chicken breast, then had leftovers with smoked salmon.

  • Coconut cauliflower korma

    • hbakke on December 01, 2023

I should have cooked the sauce longer since it was pretty thin, but it still had great flavor. We enjoyed this served with rice and the cucumber salad from this book.

    • KevinSeattle on December 22, 2023

I did not have any small hot peppers on hand, so it was meh. I stirred in some Calabrian pepper paste (to taste) and it went from blah to WOW, really fast. Don’t skip the peppers. I will definitely make this again.

  • Fruit & nut spelt breakfast muffins

    • meg_meb on December 08, 2023

Super good! Did cherry, prune, almond, walnut. Next I'll try apricot and pistachio

  • Future brownies

    • meggan on December 13, 2023

These tasted ok but nothing amazing. Had a slight gritty texture where I was expecting something more bouncy.

    • Pandan on May 16, 2024

I was curious about the consistency using glutinous rice flour. Sounded great in the cook but it was the first recipe that disappointed me. The brownies were edible, but the chocolate taste wasn’t that intense, even though I used good quality Dutch processed cocoa powder. A little bit too salty for me although i normally like sweet and salty flavours. Would have been better with additional chocolate maybe? Won’t be baking these again.

    • Chelsea_c88 on March 15, 2025

Happy to report I didn't have a gritty texture (I mixed about 2 minutes longer than the recipe advised, this may have helped?) but the chocolate flavor is, as mentioned, kind of mild. The texture is really fun, though! I did top it with some chocolate chips before I baked, and they give a nice pop of extra chocolate every once in awhile. Not a bad recipe by any means, my family enjoyed them, and they make for a nice change from normal brownies.

    • rani458180 on January 05, 2026

ive made these several times and loved them!

  • Fruity-doodle cookies

    • jenburkholder on December 15, 2023

These really did taste like pie, the recipe intro didn’t lie. I used raspberries and they came out a beautiful magenta shade. Only quibble was that the texture was a bit crumblier than I would have liked.

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

Tasty, I would make them a tad less sweet next time.

  • Slice & bake shortbread

    • jenburkholder on December 15, 2023

This is just a shortbread recipe, but it came out well following the directions. I put sprinkles in mine.

  • Braised short ribs with anchovy & so much garlic

    • Pricharm on December 30, 2023

Absolutely phenomenal. Our new Christmas dinner tradition.

    • carolyn_307wlm on February 08, 2026

Easy but time consuming. Worth every minute of time spent.

  • Chickpea & Swiss chard stew

    • hbakke on January 22, 2024

This was too spicy for us. I used the recommended 3/4 tsp cayenne pepper substitution for the Kashmiri chili powder. We blended the leftovers and added a good amount of plain Greek yogurt to reduce the spice level. We preferred the blended version.

    • fprincess on March 23, 2025

I loved the spices in this dish! It is extremely flavorful (I used fresh spices from Penzey's) and well balanced. I reduced the red chili from 3/4 to 1/4 tsp and it was still very lively, the perfect amount of heat for me. There is some lemon juice in there which makes the flavors pop, and well as a little bit of butter which makes it richer. I really liked it with a nice dollop of Greek yoghurt. It makes a great lunch!

    • reginald_mlp9q6 on April 01, 2026

Delicious delicious recipe, almost ends up tasting like it has tomatoes in it. Def do not forget the acid in this one!

  • (Any) steak & salad dinner

    • luluinphilly on January 24, 2024

We loved this- I used rib eye and dry brined it for 24 hours prior to cooking. I loved the step by step guide using a thermometer to achieve the perfect temperature . I love to butter baste a steak, and I never know when to start the process and Sohla took the guesswork out of it .

  • Cheddar cheese rough puff pastry

    • KevinSeattle on January 26, 2024

I think this cheese rough-puff will make really good cheese straws, too. It’s not hard, but it needs a lot of chilling time, so maybe a weekend thing and not a weeknight thing.

  • Broccoli & cheese galette

    • KevinSeattle on January 26, 2024

This broccoli and cheese galette is straight forward and delicious, and very rich. I think serving it in smaller portions as a cocktail hour hors d'oeuvre would be great. I added some chili flakes to the broccoli and it was very good.

    • Tessvssr on January 07, 2026

Not my favorite. Too rich to eat as a meal - a bit one dimensional too.

  • Ginger garlic scallion sauce

    • hbakke on February 04, 2024

Delicious sauce! One small quibble I have with this book is that I've noticed a number of photos have been color enhanced or overly saturated. The picture in the book on page 202 is a (more appealing looking) reddish color than my resulting sauce, which seems impossible with the listed ingredients.

    • tom_7vumtn on February 11, 2026

Yum, tastes like miso ginger dressing from a Benihana

  • Tofu & bok choy with ginger garlic scallion sauce

    • hbakke on February 04, 2024

Simple, but flavorful recipe. The sauce was delicious.

    • hashi on May 06, 2026

      Super easy, tasty weeknight dinner.

  • Taco party black beans

    • jenburkholder on February 09, 2024

These were fine, but I didn’t feel like they were more than the sum of their parts. Too boldly flavored for most meals - although I do agree with the author they would be good in a taco salad!

    • hbakke on February 23, 2024

Ugly, but tasty beans. I used these as recommended in the recipe intro as a component of a taco salad. I would make this again.

    • Jojobuch on October 21, 2024

Delicious, used them as recommended in a taco salad.

  • Monday chicken dinner for winners

    • Lepa on February 12, 2024

This recipe made me feel like I finally cracked the code for making a fabulous roasted chicken. I read a [rave] review of this recipe on a blog I like and decided to make it for dinner. Everyone in the family said the chicken was the best I have ever made. For a side we made the grilled little gems with garlic and dill (same recipe). I enjoyed them but they weren't as good as the chicken and potatoes.

    • Collin135790 on January 02, 2026

Easy way to serve delicious roasted chicken!

  • Cabbage & yuba with spicy peanut dressing

    • hbakke on February 12, 2024

We enjoyed this dinner. The yuba sheets I had were frozen in a big wad and nothing like the nice sheets shown in the pictures. Bit of a disaster there. I liked the crisp-chewy texture of the yuba, and we both thought the sauce combined with the charred cabbage was delicious. Leftover yuba was very chewy on day two.

  • A very banana-y banana bread

    • hbakke on March 02, 2024

Yum! We loved this banana bread with its sugary crust. The browned butter was a very nice background flavor. I would make this again.

    • jenburkholder on March 12, 2024

Just what a banana bread should be - moist, banana-y, buttery. I went light on the crusting sugar as the batter was already a bit sweeter than my normal banana bread, and it turned out lovely. Loaf was eaten by coworkers by 10 am.

    • jessncanfield on January 14, 2025

Very classic banana bread. A new favorite. Perfectly banana-y.

    • lucia_dbdl2m on June 02, 2026

Delicious!! Very moist. I loved the brown butter and slight sugar crust

  • Green goddess dressing

    • mduncan on March 22, 2024

Initially made this to go with the Quinoa Crunch Salad but now it's on repeat and I often have a fresh bottle of it in the fridge. Great over a baked potato or steamed vegetables but my favorite way to use it is to thicken it up with more avocado and serve with toasted and buttered crusty bread. I use whole-milk kefir and swap in deseeded Serrano pepper for jalapeño.

    • reginald_mlp9q6 on April 01, 2026

Makes more than I personally need for the pairing salad

  • (Better than Drake's) coffee cake

    • Pandan on April 06, 2024

I was a bit annoyed by the many steps while making it, but it was totally worth it! It tastes so good, will definitely make again. I only had a smaller pan, so I put part of the dough in 3 additional muffin pans. They also turned out really well!

    • mooo42 on May 28, 2024

Cake is really light and fluffy, but I prefer the more traditionally baked coffee cake with a ton of crumb on top.

  • Black sesame & nori rice pilaf

    • Pandan on April 19, 2024

I really loved this and my toddler gobbled it up! I did it in a bit simpler way though on my rice cooker. I sautéed the rice in butter in the rice cooker and added homemade vegetable broth. Let it soak then and let the rice cooker cool off. Then cooked the rice and added pulverized nori crisps I had leftover, which did have some added flavour.

  • Charred lemon risotto

    • Bessp on May 25, 2024

This was only meh. The risotto I made exactly to the recipe and I found it quite bland. I added roasted salmon and broccoli to make it more of a meal. Next time I'll zest the lemons before charring, and probably add garlic and more salt as well.

    • TFall21 on May 02, 2026

I think of this as a creamy, lemony cacio e pepe rice. I liked it quite a bit but I don't know if I'd rush to make it again, it was quite rich. I did add an additional half lemon to brighten it up.

  • Broiler lamb kofta with all the fixin's

    • jaelsne on June 23, 2024

The kofta kebabs were absolutely fantastic, especially with the “fixings.” Highly recommend this recipe. Be aware that the meat mixture is made ahead and needs to rest for six-24 hours, so plan ahead.

    • Tvigdal on March 05, 2025

Really easy to make. I would maybe add a little more spices next time.

    • jenburkholder on December 25, 2025

Good flavor but maybe too plain - agreed with Tvigdal that some spices would go a long way. Fixings were great.

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

The fixins make the dish. Keep an eye out on temp

  • Crispy-skinned salmon with radishes & nuoc cham

    • jaelsne on June 26, 2024

We liked this recipe. The fish was delicious. I would double the radish salad ingredients because it felt skimpy for three people, let alone four.

    • Daou on January 29, 2026

This was so delicious and easy. Some of the radish leaves were soggy so I air fried while broiling the fish. It was all so yummy with the sauce! Also, Never knew you could cook radish leaves.

    • AMcGrath on February 08, 2026

I too thought this was delicious. I served it with the Watermelon Chaat as suggested.

  • Chicken-y chive rice pilaf

    • Pandan on June 29, 2024

This was a nice way to use up some of the chicken fat and bone broth I had after roasting two chickens. I didn’t add extra salt, next time I will. Was a little too greasy for my taste but other than that tasty. I omitted the thyme as I served it with Asian food.

  • Chilled green tahini soba

    • jenburkholder on October 12, 2024

Really very tasty. More than the sum of its parts.

  • Seared & braised chicken thighs with cabbage curry

    • meggan on January 30, 2025

Surprisingly spicy but easy and a good way to use up all that CSA cabbage.

  • Walnut brown butter chocolate chip cookies

    • Augusstinlucass on April 06, 2025

      Measurements?

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

Unbelievable cookies! First from scratch cookies I have ever made too.

    • katlyn_g4nn0e on February 27, 2026

      Possibly my favorite cookie recipe

  • Crumbly hazelnut smooches with dark chocolate

    • jessncanfield on May 01, 2025

These are…not good. Very crumbly dough was hard to work with and stayed crumbly post baking too. Used the recommended rice flour and European butter so something else went wrong.

  • Basic pot of creamy legumes

    • breadenthusiast on October 08, 2025

First time I made the mistake of dumping in the full amount of salt - I don't have access to kosher salt and instead use a coarser sea salt. Turned out way too salty. About half the amount of salt (which is also what is mentioned in the book) works well. The recipe gives plenty of advice as well as inspiration for aromatics and herbs to add.

    • reginald_mlp9q6 on April 01, 2026

Changed the way I cook beans forever, saves money, high on fiber, cannot recommend enough

  • Cheesy macaroni pomodoro

    • Bumbledog on January 17, 2026

Fanciest Spaghettio recipe ever! Really though, this was a hit in my house. Will make again.

    • hjcrookston on May 17, 2026

My go-to easy dinner when I just need something simple and nourishing.

  • Spaghetti with zucchini, pecorino & mint

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

      Love this recipe

    • erika_s5cvdd on May 28, 2026

Perfect flavour combination, will make it again and again

  • Broiler turkey meatballs in perky puttanesca sauce

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

I think the amount of panade in the recipe makes the meatballs too soft. I would also increase the tomato amount.

  • Turmeric potatoes with a whole lotta lemon

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

Too bitter, not sure what happened.

  • Bisteeya-inspired phyllo chicken pie

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

A bit dry, I wish there was a sauce or something moist in the recipe.

  • Brown butter cinnamon pecan crumble

    • chefoclairo on January 19, 2026

I still included the oats and added a pinch of salt. I forgot the cinnamon so added it to my fruit layer instead. Really easy and I love it with the pecans

  • Fresh pasta pomodoro

    • dany_du23o5 on January 25, 2026

      Easy, simple, and delicious.

  • Frito marshmallow cookies

    • dany_du23o5 on February 08, 2026

Really good! Have never had the crunchiness of fritos and the chewiness of the melted marshmallows in a cookie. Felt very appropriate for the super bowl party we are going to.

  • Hainanese-inspired chicken rice

    • tom_7vumtn on February 11, 2026

Very good, my wife didn’t like that the chicken was cold but I thought the hot sauce made it great

    • jennsutherland on February 20, 2026

This is a go too when my stomach needs something gentler. So so comforting. I do use the NYT Cooking poaching method - bring a big pot of water to a boil with all the aromatics. Let it boil for 5 min, then add the chicken, and cover, turn the heat off, let it gently poach for 2.5hrs. Makes the softest plumpest chicken.

  • Chocolate chip shortbread

    • olympia_mhnhwe on March 14, 2026

Mine were pretty crumbly and so I couldn’t get them really round. I added both chocolate chips and nuts, but the flavor was great

  • Strawberry Pop-Tart bars

    • hjcrookston on April 11, 2026

Decent little treat! The crumble part needs a little adjustment because it came out pretty sandy, but the other components were perfect.

    • TFall21 on April 20, 2026

These are tasty and just plain fun. With so many separate components I thought they’d be a real project but not at all. The components came together quickly. I did add a smidge more butter to both the shortbread and crumble.

  • Burnt Basque cheesecake with ripe stone fruit

    • fprincess on March 23, 2025

I don't really like the typical American cheesecake, but this version is delightful with its caramelized flavor. It's also less dense than a regular cheesecake and I love the way it rises in the oven, a bit like a souffle. Delicious with some berries, and addictive. I like making a smaller version so it fits in a loaf pan.

  • Cardamom pistachio cake with mango whipped cream

    • meggan on March 23, 2024

I messed up and overcooked the cake but the frosting was delicious.

  • Crusty no-knead focaccia (& how to make it pizza)

    • dichohecho on April 26, 2026

Turned out really well both times I've made it, but could definitely get away with less than 2 x 6tbsp of oil. King Arthur Flour uses 2 x 2tbsp on a similarly sized one. Half wondering if some teaspoons got changed into tablespoons by accident. Made it into pizza one time (as instructed) and found that the second cooking time needed to be way way way shorter. Just watched it til it looked good. Would recommend using a silicon pastry brush to apply tomato sauce to pizza versions - made it easy to get fairly even coverage.

    • Pandan on February 11, 2024

I had to reduce the baking time by a few minutes, maybe would just do 20 minutes since it still came out really crispy

    • dany_du23o5 on January 19, 2026

This recipe comes out spongy every time I have made it, despite adjustments.

  • Parker House rolls

    • chickchickyboom on November 26, 2023

Absolutely delicious. Make sure to start 24-36 hours before you want it complete. I measured to the exact gram for each ingredient in the recipe and had 15 rolls in the end, with a tiny little 16th, but that was not a big issue. Everyone loved them.

  • Baked white beans with dates

    • TFall21 on May 02, 2026

Really like these. I used store brand white beans and I was amazed at how toothsome and creamy they came out, even though I forgot to salt them during the initial soak. The dates give the mix a nice sweetness. I cooked up leftovers with chopped chicken sausages for an adult-ish take on beanie weenie.

  • Masa & buttermilk tres leches

    • Havemoicy on February 09, 2026

Not got the recipe but adding some butter in to the beginning stage of the recipe should counteract the dryness

    • mweinshel on February 08, 2026

I’ve made this numerous times, and it’s a hit with everyone (the masa, buttermilk, and almond work beautifully together), but: I, too, have tried to get the soak to more uniformly moisten the cake, because it does seem a tad dry. No matter how many holes I poke in the cake, there still tend to be dry spots. I’ve even tried letting it refrigerate for an extra day, and also gently lifting the cake out of the pan, adding some of the soak to the bottom before sliding the cake back in, but it still isn’t always as moist as I would like.

    • austin009461 on January 31, 2026

The flavor is ok (leans savory), but the texture was very off. Never had a tres leches come out dry. Assume its the masa. Would not make again.

    • reginald_mlp9q6 on April 01, 2026

So delicious as is. I've enjoyed adding hojicha to the buttermilk soak and then topping with strawberries instead of blueberries. Both ways are delish!

  • Thin & chewy roti

    • shelbstirr on February 24, 2026
