  • Orange snowballs

      A variation on snowballs (Russian teacakes, Mexican wedding cakes, etc). I used the zest of two naval oranges, and the juice of 1/2 orange. The snowballs had a hint of citrus, but next time I will add 1/8 teaspoon orange extract.

  • Cranberry-orange pinwheels

      The cranberry-orange is a great holiday flavor combination. I sprinkled some coarse-grained sparkling sugar on top of the cookies before baking. It added a sweet crunch without covering the pinwheel pattern.

  • Cherry-almond slices

      Perfect for brunch; not too sweet. These are like long, narrow shortbread cookies with cherry preserves in the middle, and nuts in the shortbread dough & on top of the slices. Not as cakelike as I expected from the book's photo, but still good. I substituted pecans for almonds.
