Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Limeade

  • Bagels

    • MarciK on February 23, 2026

Despite the additional steps, these were as easy to make as regular bread. They make 12 small bagels, probably about half the size of store bought bagels. I needed less flour than the recipe lists.

  • Corn bread

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

I gave this 4 stars back in 1995. Since then, Deborah Madison's cornbread recipe from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone has become my go-to recipe.

  • Easy biscuit mix

    • pitterpat4 on February 04, 2026

This needs salt added. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt per cup of flour. Does make good bisquick type biscuits.

  • Sugar-cookie cutouts

    • nutrica6 on August 28, 2023

easy, classic recipe that works very well. as with all sugar cookies, the trick is to keep the dough as cold as possible

  • Spritz

    • AreBe on January 02, 2012

These cookies are perfect morsels of buttery goodness.

  • Strawberry shortcake

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

(1998) This makes one big shortcake that serves 8. However, I'm sure you could probably divide up the dough and cook for less time if you prefer individual shortcakes.

  • Deviled eggs

    • Dollhouse_Cuisine on December 13, 2024

Made a while back. I wrote that it was on page 268.

  • Corn-stuffed pork chops

    • chawkins on November 02, 2020

Pretty good and mostly hands off once you got the stuffing part done. Used shallot for the onion, no corn bread or regular stuffing mix, so just toasted some bread cubes and added some sage and thyme to it, also used roasted red pepper for the pimento.

  • Mexicali pork chops

    • chawkins on July 10, 2013

I've had this cookbook for over 20 years and I always wanted to try this recipe. Well, I finally did and we could not stop eating the rice, bean and corn mixture, pretty tasty.

  • Creamy herbed pork chops

    • chawkins on June 11, 2014

My go to recipe for pork chops, quick and easy. You can also vary the herb used and get a slightly different take every time

  • Create-your-own meat loaf

    • Bloominanglophile on August 19, 2013

I have been making this meatloaf for almost my whole married life (20 years). Sure, there are fancier and more succulent versions out there, but this is in my honorary quick dinner file. As far as the options, I use soft bread crumbs, milk, fresh onion, celery, parsley, basil, oregano, ground beef, and I top the meat loaf with my "secret" meatloaf sauce--which is just ketchup mixed with Worcestershire sauce! Will serve 4, just not generously.

  • Chicken potpies

    • chawkins on June 15, 2021

My go to recipe for chicken or turkey potpies. Have been making this since the early 90’s. This is almost always made after every Thanksgiving or every time I buy a rotisserie chicken or roast a whole chicken. Have also made both variations: herb-crumb-topped chicken potpies and biscuit-topped chicken potpies with the last one being the least favorite as the dough to filling ratio is a bit high to our liking.

  • Chicken Divan

    • MLGradisek on June 02, 2026

Didn't like this recipe - not much flavor

  • Stuffed Cornish game hens

    • taochild on December 08, 2019

I adapted the recipe to a slow cooker years ago and I got rid of the stuffing but kept the sauce. The sauce is great over mashed sweet potatoes.

  • Five-cup salad

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

This salad always made an appearance at holiday meals when I was growing up, except that we used canned fruit cocktail and mandarin oranges instead of pineapple chunks. A cliché dish, but sometimes one just has to honor tradition!

  • White sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 09, 2016

A good, basic recipe for white sauce (stovetop method).

  • Cheese sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 09, 2016

Very bland with the recommended Swiss cheese. They also recommend American, gruyere, or blue cheese. Whatever you decide to use, make sure it is a full-flavored cheese. It also said to omit the salt, but my attempt with the Swiss cheese needed it.

  • Hollandaise sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

I prefer a stronger lemon taste to my hollandaise.

  • Green beans amandine

    • Bloominanglophile on November 15, 2022

Not a bad side dish, with an easy prep. I do not boil the beans for as long as they say to in the recipe--I pretty much just blanch them.
