Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Braised red bean curd chicken

    • chawkins on June 13, 2022

Very good. I used bone-in chicken thigh because that is what I prefer for braising. Very similar to my mon’s with the exception of the addition of five spice powder which worked well with the red fermented bean curd.

  • Tomato-curry chicken

    • chawkins on September 12, 2022

Pretty good, not too spicy. I used garden Roma tomatoes.

  • Stir-fried cabbage with dried shrimp

    • chawkins on June 13, 2022

I made half a recipe using half of a head of cabbage from the garden. Added a pack of bean thread noodle as my mom did. Very comforting dish.

Publishers Text

The author recalls his youth in Chicago's Chinatown and the easily-cooked everyday meals that his working mother prepared for him, as well as some dishes for special occasions, and family recipes from friends. The 150 recipes are accompanied by Hom's personal reminiscences of Chinese-American life.
