Galentine’s Day treats

Valentine’s Day gets a lot of attention, but a trend that started with a sitcom keeps growing every year. Galentine’s Day began with a bit on the TV show Parks & Rec, where Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope hosted an annual breakfast and mimosa event with her friends. In the episode that introduced Galentine’s Day, Knope declared “You know my code. Hoes before bros. Uteruses before duderuses. Ovaries before brovaries.” While the “official” date for the holiday is February 13, people often choose another day around Valentine’s to celebrate.

What began as a skit has turned into a mainstream “holiday”, with women celebrating their friendships at events that usually include food, often treats you might expect in a romantic Valentine’s Day repast. Food sites have embraced the holiday, like Taste of Home which features 30 Galentine’s desserts that are “better than a boyfriend”, and Delish, which also decided that 30 was the right number of Galentine’s recipes to offer.

Whether you are going with a traditional Valentine’s Day dinner or a Galentine’s Day event, you can browse the EYB Library, where there are over 2,700 recipes tagged for Valentine’s Day. There are even a couple of recipes with Galentine’s Day in the name, including the Galentine’s Day pitcher cocktails from The Kitchn shown above.

“What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”—Leslie Knope.
