Celebrate Shrove Tuesday, aka Pancake Day
February 13, 2024 by DarcieToday is Shrove Tuesday aka National Pancake Day. The Tuesday before Lent begins is a traditional day for eating pancakes, hearkening back to a time when any remaining rich foods (usually foods with a lot of fat or eggs) were eaten prior to the Lenten fasting. Because pancakes factor so heavily into this tradition, this food ‘holiday’ is a perfect excuse to make breakfast for dinner (not that I ever need one).

Jenny has previously posted all about the best pancake recipes, including Ebelskivers (Danish pancakes) with lingonberry jam, Overnight Belgian waffles, her favorite Lighter-Than-Air Waffles from the Saint Louis Days, Saint Louis Nights: A Culinary Tour of the Gateway City book, and many more. You can also find tips for solving the troubling problem of the wayward first pancake of each batch.
The EYB Library contains over 7,600 pancake recipes, and just under 2,000 of them are available online, including these gems:
- Buttermilk pancakes from The Breakfast Book by Marion Cunningham
- Peach and sour cream pancakes from The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb Perelman

- Scallion pancakes with dipping sauce from The Splendid Table by America’s Test Kitchen
