Food news antipasto

Chef and cookbook author Samin Nosrat recently sat down with Sam Sanders – in her lush Oakland garden – to talk about food and healing. She spoke about her favorite item from the garden (passionfruit), and broke down how hard it was to recover from the letdown she felt following the success of her first cookbook and Netflix series of the same name. Plus, she dishes on the healing powers of dinner parties and gives advice for pulling them off yourself.

Good Eats roast turkey from Food Network by Alton Brown

US residents are getting ready for the biggest food holiday of the year, Thanksgiving. For most, the centerpiece dish is roast turkey, but a recent avian flu epidemic might make those birds less plentiful and more expensive. Turkey production has hit a 40-year low, pushing up wholesale prices. Maybe this is the year to try tofurkey.

Yasmin Khan’s latest book, Sabzi, was pulled from Amazon after a Cornish deli owner claimed Khan was infringing on her trademark by using the word sabzi in the title. Kate Attlee owns a deli named Sabzi and in 2022 she trademarked the name. In a Substack post, fellow cookbook author Rukmini Iyer remarked that “OVER ONE BILLION PEOPLE use the word ‘sabzi’ daily,” and “It’s like getting a trademark for a fish shop called ‘Fish’.” Bestselling author Hetty Lui McKinnon echoed the sentiment, describing the situation as “completely mad”.

Modern refrigerators are replete with all manner of technological innovations like humidity control, sections that can be switched from freezer to fridge, and wifi connected screens. Vintage refrigerators might not have computerized gadgetry, but as Chowhound’s Emmy Schneider-Green explains, they have unique features that may make you long for the good ol’ days. I wish the swiveling pull out shelves would make a comeback.

Speaking of retro items, one throwback food is experiencing a renaissance. The budget-stretching box mix, Hamburger Helper, has seen sales jump by 15% this year. The rising cost of beef is one driver for this increase, as is a makeover of the product to reduce cooking time and use ingredients like real cheese and reducing preservatives. Hamburger Helper’s cameo on the hit series ‘The Bear’ also helped boost the product’s image.

Not only me that’s been left scratching my head over the Sabzi issue then but not surprisingly the deli owner withdrew her complaint last week! #backlash?
Wonder how popular wifi connected appliances are or will be when it turns out you need to watch a 30 second advert before it’ll allow you to open your fridge door! It WILL happen 😐

Ah yes…the good ol’ days re appliances. We have had to service our fridge (purchased new in 2010) twice for a failed internal sensor. We also had our upright freezer (new in 2015) shut down twice…once on a blazing hot 2024 Friday summer evening causing a panicked run up & down our little road seeking temporary freezer space before we were able to get it to reset on Sunday and again this past August with the same outside temps/ panic …why is it never in January?? The 2nd failure was unfixable & we now have a newer model used upright + an emergency chest freezer in the garage. We are also on our THIRD dishwasher since 2006. BUT of course the very old Harvest Gold fridge in the laundry room has been ticking away since the late 90’s with never a hitch, glitch or burp. I’m just happy it’s not Avocado Green 🙂

With regards to the appliance piece…I keep hearing Paul Hollywood’s voice in my head saying, “style over substance!”. Not to mention to current trend of those fridges that they make with blank fronts so you can install the same cabinet door fronts as your cabinets so they blend in. I didn’t really realize this until a friend built a new home with one of these…they are only as deep as your cabinets. They are basically only good for holding condiments and cans of soda! My friend ended up putting two regular fridges in her garage that can hold platters and pots and such. I am trying to avoid wifi connected devices because I don’t want my appliances to be shuttered just because of a firmware update. Ugh.
