Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Soured cream and herb dip

    • Ro_ on December 05, 2022

A nice dip. Definitely need to give it resting time before eating, so that the raw garlic can mellow out a bit.

  • Avocado guacamole with tomato and chilli

    • Ro_ on August 17, 2022

A nice guac, interesting use of spring onions instead of red.

  • Cheesy cheese spirals

    • Ro_ on December 05, 2022

My god these were a faff! I was surprised seeing as Mary Berry recipes are usually faff-free. I ended up with 16 small squares which had to be individually rolled up, then each wrapped in clingfilm, then unwrapped after chilling and cut into 4. Very fiddly! After all that, the end result was nice enough but just not special enough to justify all that fiddling. Will not repeat.

  • Goat's cheese and shallot tarts with walnut pastry

    • Ro_ on March 28, 2021

Nice flavours, but I found them a little dry overall. Not sure if it's because I cooked them and then left them in a warm oven for a couple of hours, or because they could have done with some cream in with the egg and cheese mix. The pastry was easy to make. I made these in little tart tins.

  • Garlic mushrooms and cured ham on toasted brioche

    • Ro_ on September 01, 2022

Maybe it was because I couldn't get all the varieties of mushrooms suggested, but this dish didn't wow me. It looked prettier than it tasted. Needed more moisture - I think it would have been nicer with an egg or something.

  • Golden goat's cheese, beetroot and squash salad

    • Ro_ on December 23, 2021

This looked really pretty, but apart from the breaded fried goat cheese which was delicious, I found it underwhelming. I think the squash would have been nicer oven baked with some spices to add more flavour to the overall dish.

  • Meatballs in tomato and basil sauce

    • Ro_ on April 22, 2021

A solid meatball recipe, but not special enough to become my definitive one.

  • Horseradish and mustard beef casserole

    • Ro_ on November 29, 2019

A basic beef casserole recipe, the main differences being the use of white wine instead of red, and the addition of quite a bit of mustard and horseradish at the end of cooking. I liked this a lot and will make again.

  • Chicken with asparagus and lemon crème fraîche sauce

    • joneshayley on March 05, 2019

Very tasty, easy midweek meal- went down very well with kids and adults alike. Not sure I agree with Mary that it could be served at a dinner party- it’d have to be a very casual dinner party.

    • Ro_ on October 22, 2020

I made this with broccoli instead of asparagus, since my partner doesn't like the latter. We thought the sauce was really tasty, and the chicken breasts stayed pretty moist and didn't dry out which was also good. The shallots definitely added a delicious savoury note, which balanced well with the creme fraiche and lemon. I'll make this again.

  • Salmon fillets on a bed of spinach with tarragon sauce

    • Ro_ on May 06, 2020

This was a delicious salmon recipe which I'd make again. Although there were quite a few steps to follow, overall it came together quite quickly. I cooked for 6 mins in the oven which was perfect, I prefer my salmon just barely cooked through.

  • Carrot and poppyseed salad

    • eeeve on July 04, 2015

Not a fan - found this both bland and too poppyseedy. Prefer carrot salads with orange and cumin.

  • Asian slaw

    • Ro_ on August 21, 2020

This made a great alternative to traditional mayonnaise-based coleslaw, I enjoyed the sweet and spicy sauce. I hand-shredded the vegetables to avoid ended up with mushy coleslaw, and I think it was the right decision since my food processor grates a bit too finely. Partner really liked this too.

  • Malay fried rice

    • Ro_ on August 20, 2022

Very tasty, and the kind of thing that could be adapted to include whatever meat/veg you had that needed using up. I will make this again, good weeknight staple.

  • Lasagne express

    • joneshayley on February 21, 2016

very nice lasagne- quick and easy - perfect for midweek family dinner. doesn't reheat as well as 'normal' lasagne though

  • Garlic mushroom penne gratin

    • joneshayley on February 21, 2016

My children adored this. I will make this again and again

    • Ro_ on March 28, 2021

This was a "nice but not great" recipe for me. It was lacking a bit of zing, maybe some lemon would be nice as a contrast to the creamy, earthy flavours.

  • Winter crumble tart

    • gillsil on December 25, 2018

We had this today as the “alternative” Christmas pudding and it was delicious, especially with custard! I used a readymade tart case for easiness but will definitely make it again and make my own pastry case next time. The filling and crumble topping were quick and easy to prep - I made the filling the night before and the crumble was all made in the food processor. Would make a really good and easy winter dinner party dessert.

  • Round lemon drizzle cake

    • joneshayley on February 23, 2018

Easy and delicious. I’ve made many different lemon drizzle cakes but this is by far the best. Light, fluffy and easy. I halved the drizzle topping and it was plenty

  • Pecan and cinnamon ripple squares

    • RoniB on April 25, 2019

This was great for a summer tea out of doors. It went so fast that I only just got a piece myself!
