Roya Shariat is a Brooklyn-based writer who leads Social Impact and Brand Partnerships at Glossier. She writes a newsletter on food and culture and runs a popular food TikTok with her maman.

The mother and daughter team took some time to answer a few questions for our Members:

Q: What first triggered your interest in cooking?

My interest in cooking was triggered by watching my maman work her magic in the kitchen, and watching way too many cooking shows on public television (Martin Yan’s Yan Can Cook and Nathalie Dupree were two favorites). I loved that simple ingredients could transform into something delicious or unexpected, and I wanted to learn that magic from a very young age.

Q: If you had to describe your cooking style, what would it be? What types of recipes will we find in your new book?

My cooking style is simple. I wouldn’t say it’s over-the-top or incredibly fancy: I love making dishes that are comforting and taste ‘like home’ and I strive to do that with this cookbook. I’m bringing all the incredible dishes I grew up with, but with some fun twists and with easy instructions, hoping to showcase the beautiful versatility of Iranian cuisine for both those who know and love it, and for those who are new to it.

Q: Are you a cookbook collector? If so, tell us about your collection?

Both Maman and I are avid cookbook collectors. My mom has a section of bookshelves in her home exclusively for cookbooks! I have part of my kitchen cabinet reserved for the books I’m loving and using the most, rotating through it as part of a bigger stack I keep in my tiny apartment. Some favorites right now are Abi Balangit’s “Mayumu”, Stacey Mei Yan Fong’s “50 Pies, 50 States,” and Nasim Alikhani’s “Sofreh”.

Q: What is the best part of your job? Do you sometimes feel like working with food all day keeps you from wanting to get creative in the kitchen?

The best part of food writing and cooking is when others make your recipes and share how these dishes made them feel! Food and community are synonymous for me, so the best thing is just being able to share food with others and see how they react to it!

Q: What is your go to for a quick dinner – quick dessert?

My ‘Sunday Chicken Stew’ is a one-pot wonder from the cookbook and one of my favorite Iranian dishes ever, it’s slowly simmered chicken laced with turmeric and tomato paste and fresh veg. Easiest quick dessert is fruit and rosewater whipped cream (another cookbook gem!).

Q: Tell us about this cookbook or any future projects you are working on?

I’m hoping to continue writing even more into the future, more to come on that front hopefully soon!

Be sure to follow the authors on their social media channels: Instagram and TikTok.
