Modernist Bread at Home – Bread School Announcement and Giveaway

Enter our US giveaway to win one copy of Modernist Bread at Home by Nathan Myhrvold and Francisco Migoya.

Modernist Bread at Home by Nathan Myhrvold and Francisco Migoya is created by the same team behind the James Beard award-winning Modernist Bread as well as Modernist Pizza (IACP 2022 Self-published winner) and Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking (2012 James Beard winner and Cookbook of the Year as well as IACP Professional Kitchen winner 2012) and other titles.

I am so excited that the team is working on a Modernist Pastry set of books and cannot wait for its release.

Modernist Bread at Home helps home bakers fit bread making back into their weekly routine. This single, 420-page volume compiles practical techniques, foundational recipes, and scientific insights – all the result of hundreds of experiments – which have been updated and tailored specifically to the needs of home bakers. The team has applied its unique brand of rigor to making this comprehensive yet approachable book.

Our takes you inside this beautiful book and features the following

We’re excited to announce that the Modernist Cuisine team will be kicking off a special series of free monthly email courses, geared toward home bakers, today Monday, March 11. The goal for the Modernist Bread School is to help home bakers learn the fundamentals of making bread at home and bake with Modernist Bread at Home. The monthly courses are full of carefully curated tips and tricks, insights, techniques, and references (all from Modernist Bread at Home and Modernist Bread) that will help home bakers gain new skills and make delicious homemade bread, even when life gets busy. We’ll cover a variety of topics, from baking bread amid a busy schedule to the role of different bread ingredients, several of which have been crowdsourced from our online community. Here’s how it works:

  • Courses are free; to sign up, folks will need to provide their name, email address, and zip code. You don’t need to own Modernist Bread at Home to sign up, but there are many references for additional information in the book.
  • Each month we will add a new course to the bread school landing page on our website, where people will be able to sign up.
  • Upon signing up, students will receive one lesson per day, delivered straight to their inbox, throughout the course. Courses consist of five to seven written lessons, as well as a final recap with a call to action to purchase the book.
  • We will be running courses through August.

Here’s an overview of the topics we’ll be covering:

  • Getting Started with Bread Basics—March 2024
  • Navigating Bread Making from Start to Finish—April 2024
  • Fitting Bread into Busy Schedules—May 2024
  • The Role of Different Bread Ingredients—June 2024
  • How to Start a Levain and Keep It Alive—July 2024
  • Mixing and Gluten Development—August 2024

You can share the following links to the landing page on our website and the sign-up form for the first course.

  1. Modernist Cuisine Bread School Course 1 sign-up page.
  2. Modernist Cuisine Bread School landing page.

I signed up for the first class – come and join me! Be on the lookout for some events later this year.

Sourdough has put me off, even during Covid lock down, it just seemed like too much trouble, and sourdough’s devotees seemed almost like members of a cult. But now I’ve overcome my unreasonable prejudice and have decided to give it a try. So I’ll make a starter and see how it goes.
