I love the menus and the make-ahead strategies.

Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Kimchi, beef, and tofu soup

    • emmyfolklore on March 09, 2026

This recipe is an all time favorite in my house! It’s pretty much fool proof, yet turns out a little bit different each time based on the brand and fermentation level of the kimchi. I always taste the kimchi beforehand to make sure I like the flavor! If you prefer silken tofu over firm, wait until the very end to add it so it doesn’t crumble apart.

  • Harira

    • Ishie1013 on December 16, 2024

This was a wonderful winter soup. Couldn't find lamb shoulder chops, but cutting up half a boneless lamb leg worked very well. The flavor was really nice and tasted like a spicier version of a harira they used to make at a Moroccan restaurant chain near me. I did use the more spicy storebought harira rather than the subrecipe. This made a LOT too.

  • Creamy chestnut soup

    • damazinah on October 23, 2022

Good, but way to rich too serve as a main.

  • Pureed carrot soup with nutmeg

    • Ishie1013 on December 10, 2024

Lovely creamy and healthy soup. The nutmeg added depth without being cloying or giving a scented candle taste, and the soup lasted me for several days.

  • Chicken and dumplings

    • racheljmorgan on November 14, 2023

It was good, but the dumpling dough needs to be reduced to 1/2 to 1/3 of what is called for in the recipe. It took up over half the stew's volume.

    • QuinceHouse on November 04, 2025

This is fine. Nothing special. Agree the dumplings filled the entire pot.

  • Beef stew with parsnips, kale, and mushrooms

    • racheljmorgan on January 17, 2025

Had to sub in extra carrots since no parsnips can be had around here. Fairly easy to make. Really delicious and hearty.

  • Chicken schnitzel with apple-fennel rémoulade

    • Ishie1013 on February 16, 2023

Another win from ATK. I was concerned the schnitzel would be dry but it was flavorful with the lemon squeeze really brightening the flavor. While the other diner hated the remoulade, I absolutely loved it. It highlighted the chicken and paired well and is a great healthy approach to winter fruits and veggies. Great texture too.

  • Steak salad with beets, walnuts, and creamy horseradish dressing

    • Cheri on March 02, 2022

We liked this. Monitor heat of horseradish!

  • Roasted pork chops and vegetables with parsley vinaigrette

    • Cheri on March 02, 2022

Loved, loved, loved this. Excellent flavors, satisfying. Pork chops not dried out!

    • Ishie1013 on February 17, 2023

The pork was a little dry and the vinaigrette really should be doubled, but it was enjoyable. The vegetable combo, on the other hand, was AMAZING. I'd be just as happy to make this without the pork.

  • Harissa-glazed pork tenderloin with couscous salad

    • Cheri on March 02, 2022

This was good, but…store bought harrisa was very hot! Next time try ATK recipe for spice blend.

  • Crunchy Parmesan-crusted pork chops with glazed winter squash

  • Lamb meatballs with orzo, tomatoes, and feta

    • Ishie1013 on December 11, 2024

This was extremely good. I added the cherry tomatoes right after I added the meatballs to give them 5 minutes in the heat too, to burst and soften them, which I think was the right call. But rich and lovely and made a ton of leftovers for two people.

    • anjelica_52p2oe on April 08, 2026

      PHENOMENAL.

  • One-pan roasted salmon with white beans, fennel, and tomatoes

    • Cheri on March 02, 2022

This was also a hit from this book. Easy prep, nice flavors, good leftovers

  • Maple-glazed pork roast

    • racheljmorgan on December 04, 2022

I thought it was honestly pretty good and easy. However, my husband hated so much that I was obliged to cook a 2nd dinner. So, not a repeat recipe for us. If you like sweet notes in dinner, you'll probably like it.

  • Prosciutto-wrapped cod with lemon-caper butter

    • Ishie1013 on December 18, 2024

Meh. This was edible, but not particularly enjoyable. Came out very bland and the fish added flavor to the ham but not really vice versa. The dog enjoyed the leftovers.

  • Pressure-cooker boneless short rib and cauliflower puttanesca

    • anjelica_52p2oe on March 12, 2026

Great recipe— lots of flavor and a nice change up from plain red or meat sauce.

  • Lion's head meatballs (Shizi tou)

    • Ishie1013 on December 10, 2024

Make sure to buy ground pork not included in list

  • Stuffed cabbage rolls

    • racheljmorgan on January 20, 2023

Cabbage leaves not as soft as I wanted, but the dish was well liked by both of us.

    • sarahawker on February 16, 2026

Really good recipe. I over poured the vinegar so it had more of a sweet and sour taste but honestly we liked that. Microwaving the cabbage for the leaves is kind of genius.

  • Mushroom ragu

    • QuinceHouse on November 04, 2025

      Lacked depth. Fine recipe.

  • Two-hour turkey and gravy

    • racheljmorgan on January 13, 2026

This ended up needing 3 hours, but I wasn't in a rush. Entire 12-16lb turkeys can be got for $1-$4 for the last 3 months so we've made 5 whole ones in that span. This was a straightforward, low fuss recipe. Ended up needing to de-fat the gravy and add more flour for it to thicken.

  • Swiss chard pie

    • racheljmorgan on January 17, 2023

We found the filling really needed more salt and some seasoning. Crust was great, very buttery. The pork wasn't noticeable taste-wise, might omit.

  • Double-crust turkey pot pie

    • racheljmorgan on November 24, 2024

Turned out well, though needed more salt in both dough and filling. The crust is a bit thick to me, but it does hold together nicely. It's not a heavy dish despite the ingredients.

  • Pan-roasted pear salad with frisée, goat cheese, and almonds

    • dc151 on November 07, 2022

I really liked this. Easy to make, great flavor. We used toasted walnuts instead of almonds. It would've been great with the bleu cheese like in the alternate recipe to give it a nice oomph. I would make it again.

  • Pat-in-the-pan buttermilk biscuits

    • racheljmorgan on October 17, 2022

These were easy and had a nice fluffy texture (though a bit cake like). The middle ones rose to 3 inches high. Made the usual ATK baking adjustment for our oven, down to 425F. I'm not sure if I would call these real biscuits, but they are good in a pinch. Matthew approved.

  • Cranberry-sour cream pound cake

    • racheljmorgan on November 13, 2022

Used a third of the batter to make two nutcrackers with a Nordic cakelet mold. 350F for 25 min. No sticking whatsoever, and I only buttered the pan very lightly. Texture is almost pancake-like. It's not a heavy pound cake or too sweet. I liked that the cranberries didn't sink down into the nutcracker mold or mar the effect. The cakes could stand on their feet but need a little propping because they're top-heavy and soft. Might be pretty with a red glaze. Next day storage: slightly tougher and drier texture than previous day. Has developed almost an angel food cake flavor to it, strangely.

  • Eggnog snickerdoodles

    • racheljmorgan on November 29, 2022

Another early morning insomnia Christmas cookie bake. It's a pleasant rum and butter cookie. Matthew's review: just tastes like a standard crisp sugar cookie. Doesn't necessarily evoke eggnog for me, but a nice winter choice for a party tomorrow that's not Christmas-themed. Froze half the batch, so I'll see how those fare closer to holidays. Seems like a white chocolate half dip or icing drizzle would be better for "eggnog" theme.

  • St. Lucia buns

    • Ishie1013 on February 16, 2023

Followed the recipe exactly (minus the suggestion of pearled sugar which I didn't have) and these came out very nicely. The taste isn't wildly interesting, but I think that's the way they're supposed to be. They look beautiful with a bright yellow color and taste good with jam. Bit time consuming, but great end product.

  • Oatmeal dinner rolls

  • Masala chai

    • racheljmorgan on March 19, 2023

Lightly sweet and cinnamony. Not particularly spicy, but has a good density to mix with milk.

  • Fudgy brownies

    • racheljmorgan on March 22, 2023

      Rich, but still somewhat cake-y.

  • Skillet-roasted Brussels sprouts with lemon and pecorino Romano

    • racheljmorgan on March 29, 2023

Light on the lemon flavor, but quick and easy

  • Almost no-knead whole-wheat bread

    • racheljmorgan on April 23, 2023

Made a half recipe in 3 qt Dutch oven, baked for 32 min total. Yielded only enough for 2 people. Great flavor and texture.

  • Rosemary focaccia

    • racheljmorgan on May 14, 2023

Pretty simple bread with lots of bitter rosemary flavor and salt. We cubed the finished focaccia for fondu. One loaf was the right amount for two. It can be baked in an 8 inch pan in an airfryer at 400F for 9min instead of 30min in oven (though given the rise time, this is more of a not having an oven adaptation than a real time saver lol). I've tried this recipe with different herb mixes and reduced salt on the pan, too. A real winner.

  • Walk-away herbed white rice for four

    • racheljmorgan on June 22, 2023

Did this in a 9×5 loaf pan reduced for 2 people. Worked perfectly on a night where not everyone was on board with cauliflower rice.

  • Broccoli and feta frittata

    • racheljmorgan on July 02, 2023

A really good, healthy, easy brunch dish in the summertime. We had seconds. I would up the salt and red pepper flakes a little. My husband really liked it with Tabasco sauce.

  • Pumpkin-chocolate chip snack cake

    • racheljmorgan on October 04, 2023

This was a really easy recipe. The cake is very soft and moist with lots of pumpkin spice flavor. The spice level is well balanced with the chocolate; both flavors are about equal. It came out nicely in a 6 cup Nordic autumn loaf mold. Not as orange in color as some pumpkin bakes, but very good tasting.

  • Pumpkin spice muffins

    • racheljmorgan on October 11, 2023

This recipe is a new favorite. The muffin has a good, hearty texture and the sugar topping stays slightly crunchy. It's essentially a pumpkin bread in the miniature. I liked that these came together quickly and didn't require a lot of ingredients. After 2 days at roomp temp, the muffins do get slightly drier and the topping becomes soft. However, they are still very good.

  • Easiest-ever biscuits

    • kshell on November 30, 2023

It doesn't get easier than this. Like a cream scone with less sugar - and less shaping! It was a dream to scoop. Didn't stick at all, granted I greased the cup measure with non-stick spray. Got exactly 10 biscuits. Needed an extra few minutes in my oven.

    • racheljmorgan on January 26, 2025

Got an extra biscuit from my batch. Easy enough to make with my short attention span 9 month old trying to help. I love the scoop method. Threw in a bit of Swiss cheese at my husband's request. Needed 12min bake.

  • Parsnip hummus

    • kshell on December 04, 2023

I liked this! Great dip if you enjoy parsnips, and leftovers were used to sauce pasta.

  • Stuffed mushrooms

    • kshell on December 04, 2023

Taste was good, but took longer than expected. I could probably wing it and make something comparable with less dirty dishes and in less time.

  • Easy holiday sugar cookies

    • racheljmorgan on December 05, 2023

Pleasant, average vanilla cookies. Not what I'd call a "sugar cookie" personally because in my mind, those are always rolled in granulated sugar before baking. They spread a bit and tend to be a bit crumbly, so any elaborate stamping is not worthwhile. Used the easy glaze on pg 340 instead of royal icing.

  • Classic buttermilk pancakes

    • racheljmorgan on February 24, 2024

Fluffy, just the right amount of sweetness.

  • Almost no-knead bread

    • racheljmorgan on October 25, 2024

This was a lovely plain white bread that doesn't require much work at all. It has a crisp, firm crust and dense interior. The flavor was not yeasty, tangy, or beer-y at all (unlike the dough smell), just plain with a decent amount of salt. My husband really loved it, but I found myself wanting a bit stronger taste. Holds up to thin slicing and sandwiches well.

  • Roasted turnips, shallots, and garlic with rosemary

    • racheljmorgan on November 23, 2024

Very bitter with rutabagas, though texture good. It's creamy, similar to potato. My first time trying this vegetable (and my husband's 2nd time in 20+ years). Not to my taste or his.

  • Millionaire's shortbread

    • Ishie1013 on December 11, 2024

Made this for my mom's senior center's holiday party and have been bombarded with compliments and recipe requests. The caramel filling is a bit fussy. Definitely babysit it. I used Ghirardelli bittersweet chips for the top and didn't bother with the chopping or shaving, but did use the microwave in 15 s intervals at 50% trick, and it set up very nicely. Do make sure you press down on the shortbread after it cooks. It's an important step, and the areas where I hadn't been as vigilant about pressing it down were harder to cut.

  • Cocochai

    • racheljmorgan on January 21, 2025

Subbed in ground cardamom and ground cloves for whole. Not super sweet despite the sugar, overall reminds me of thai tea. My coconut milk had a kind of savory note to it, which is clashing a bit. I'd call it just ok, kind of a normal iced chai latte. The leftover chai concentrate is very nice for use with hot milk, too.

  • Buffalo chicken dip

    • racheljmorgan on February 09, 2025

Tasty and easy for a Superbowl snack party at home. Half recipe in a 9 inch round.

  • Slow-cooker creamy pumpkin-chai soup

    • racheljmorgan on March 05, 2025

This was ok. The soup is very smooth and had a surprising amount of added sugar. It's lightly sweet with a hint of onion and warm spices. Would have been better as a side/appetizer soup than a main. Very easy recipe. Kind of a fun savory twist on "pumpkin spice".

  • Spinach and feta quiche

    • racheljmorgan on May 18, 2025

Pretty good, would add a bit more salt. Ended up with 1 cup extra egg filling which I had to bake in a separate pan.

  • Blueberry swirl muffins with frozen blueberries

    • rach3190 on August 03, 2025

This made phenomenal blueberry muffins. I did a bit of a deep dive recently and have made the Smitten Kitchen and King Arthur Flour blueberry muffins recently. This one is far more my style, not as dense/wet as Smitten Kitchen (sour cream vs buttermilk I presume) and didn't bake as dark as the KAF ones. I also added 1/4t ground coriander to pump up the blueberry flavor. Made with Wyman's frozen blueberries.

  • French toast casserole

    • VegasCook37 on September 20, 2025

Made 9/2025. Very rich and more like a bread pudding. Could bake longer than 1hr. Made in pan with high sides otherwise important to put on baking sheet as could see it bubbling over. Served with berries and a little whipped cream

  • Gravlax

    • QuinceHouse on November 04, 2025

Our go to gravlax recipe. We always have some in the freezer.

  • Sautéed parsnips with ginger, maple, and fennel seeds

    • QuinceHouse on November 04, 2025

These were very good. Make sure to cut the parsnip matchsticks quite small to ensure fast cook time.

  • Pumpkin cheesecake bars

    • QuinceHouse on November 09, 2025

These are good. Not great. I did like the ginger in the graham cracker crust.

  • Sautéed mushrooms with red wine and rosemary

    • racheljmorgan on January 13, 2026

Simple and tasty, even for a non-mushroom person. My mushroom loving husband and 1 year old raved over these.

  • Spiced red lentils

  • Slow-cooker beer and cheddar fondue

    • Hillhan on February 14, 2026

Yummy and eliminated the stress of the fondue breaking. Loved with apples!

  • Deep dish apple pie

    • sarahawker on February 15, 2026

Made for Alex’s 1st trip home from school. Very good. Impressive height and the crust stayed crisp.

  • Tiramisu

    • emiliang on April 02, 2023

I've had my share of tiramisu at restaurants, and this homemade version is head and shoulders above them. Comes together surprisingly quickly and easily, too (though it needs to sit in the fridge for 6+ hours after it's prepared). I lowered the amount of rum from 9 Tbs to 6.5 Tbs and thought it was plenty. Absolutely delightful flavors, aromas, and texture. Yields 12 generous portions.

  • Cookies made from sugar cookie mix

    • kshell on August 07, 2023

I have now made all 4 batches of cookies that come from the base mix recipe. Each time I tried and failed to pull them out of the oven before they got crunchy. Last batch I subbed veg. shortening for the butter. Bingo! You can have a buttery cookie or a soft-centered cookie, but not both.

    • racheljmorgan on December 13, 2024

I'd call these vanilla butter cookies rather than sugar cookies. They're not very sweet. The flavor really reminds me of honey-nut cheerios. Since I was making these for a children's Christmas party where they'll be coated with icing and sprinkles as an edible craft, that doesn't matter so much. I got 29 cookies instead of 24 off of 3 cups mix. As usual, lowered oven temp by 25F to 300F (ATK recipes almost always have too hot oven in my experience, or ours runs really over the mark). Medium texture, slightly crisp. Overnight in an airtight container changed texture to mildly chewy (though slightly eggy flavor).

  • Bourbon balls

    • Ishie1013 on March 12, 2024

These were decently good, but lose their shape quickly and the bourbon flavor is STRONG. I used single batch Four Roses as the bourbon.

  • Sugar cookie mix

    • racheljmorgan on December 12, 2024

I somehow ended up with about 1.5 cup more mix than described (an extra 1 dozen cookies). Easy enough to make. It is a minor time saving over normal sugar cookies, but it could make cheap gifts if portioned out into small recycled glass jars. The type of person to whom I might give this tends not to have egg or butter on hand, though. I wish I could make an all in one mix that was shelf stable. Also worth noting I'd call them vanilla butter cookies rather than sugar (because to me sugar cookies are coated in granulated sugar). Having baked these, they're not very sweet, so probably best to pair jars of it with decor icing and sprinkles.

  • Slow-cooker chocolate fondue

    • Hillhan on February 14, 2026

Easy and delicious. Served with strawberries and pieces of a pound cake.

  • Orgeat syrup
